Anyone use TeraByte Unlimited "Image for Windows"

I have been using Windows Home Server to automate backups of my non-forensic business PCs.  I have had regular connection issues with between computers and the home server though. 

I got an email from TeraByte Unlimited about their product "Image for Windows."  It looks like a fair solution to backup you computer to a network device at the physical level.  It also allows differential backups.

I wanted to see if anyone has any personal experience with it before I bought it.

I have used some of Terabyte unlimited products before, and they worked very well for my needs and in some cases were the only product that could do certain things. I have been happy with them, though I have not used their Image for Windows Product.

Chuck,

My company uses it as part of the LANDesk management suite. I know of
two issues that we have had:

1. We started off using the Encrypted File System with Windows XP.
When a PC needed to be re-imaged, the TeraByte tool was used to make a
backup image of the user's system. After the system was re-imaged with
a fresh image, the user's data was restored from the backup image. It
was a disaster. NONE of the EFS encrypted files were usable.

2. I don't think that the version of the tool we have works with
systems with SATA ports that run in the AHCI mode. It only works in
ATA compatibility mode.

These issue may have been corrected in the newest version.

If you decide to buy it, test a restore BEFORE you need to DEPEND on
it. Testing a backup process includes making sure that you can restore
the data to the original system or alternate media.

BTW I use Windows Home Server on a home built system and love it. What
kind of connection problems are you having? I have tested restoring a
system and have even used it to "clone" a laptop to a larger hard
disk. For me, it just works!

On the Windows Home Server, it works well on my average PCs.  My main machine has a 1 TB system drive (With multiple OS's) and a 1TB Data drive.  I then have a few 1 TB drives that data recovery/ forensics work transfers to when doing that sorta work.

Every since I went to Windows 7 as the primary OS on that machine and started using VHDs for alternate booting... My backup has been failing on an unspecified connection error.

I honestly have not really worked on trying to find the solution.  I got the email from TeraByte and though I would look into that before putting time into WHS.  

TeraByte caught my interest to use for home or small biz clients that shutdown as soon as you say the work "server."

I'm not on Windows 7 yet.

When I first started using Windows Home Server (WHS), I backed up my
systems several times and then decided to test the restore process by
putting a different HD in one of my systems. Much to my surprise it
failed with an "unknown network error" (you gotta love Microsoft error
messages). It turns out the problem was caused by the fact that
sometimes Windows uses DNS for name resolution and sometimes it uses
WINS. I don't have an internal DNS on my network. I reconfigured my
router and PCs so that their names are not fully qualified domain
names (workstation1 rather than workstation1.mydomain.com). Once I did
this the restore worked.

I assume you have Power Pack 3 installed. It has some Windows 7
specific updates...and maybe some fixes.

Hey TonyC,

Quick question about the EFS problem you encountered. After you imported the
old EFS Certificate into the new image, you still couldn't access/use the
EFS files from the backup?

Jerry,

No, importing the cert. didn't help. As I recall, the tool didn't
properly handle the alternate data streams that contain the file
encryption details. I think Ghost had the same problem.

Tools need to be EFS aware to work properly.
