Good morning. I am working on a 1.8" Toshiba drive (MK4009GAL). After getting a converter and another similar drive to play with it appears that the drive is just not spinning up (the other one comes up fine). My first thought would be a TVS diode issue. Has anybody worked on these before? Any idea where the TVS diodes are located? Any schematics available?

Thank you,

Philip Shaw

Hi Philip
Looking at the board, I would say that the white arrow components appear to be the TVS diodes and the Yellow Arrow component appears to be the fuse. Is the area with the red circle burnt? or is it just appear that way??

hope this helps
Frank

Those are actually the contacts that go to the cable underneath that goes directly to the motor. Nothing appears to be burned on the board. I might try pulling those diodes and see if that fixes it. @Wayne - It does nothing when power is applied.

I have another board from a similar drive I bought. Could I do any major damage by sticking that board on for a second to see if it spins up? On the bigger drives I usually call Eric in China but I am not sure how easy it would be to get a match for a 1.8" drive.

Thank you,

Phil

Hello Philip
If you take an Ohm meter and measure the impedance of the TVS, you should get a reading which will quickly change to signify an open connection. This is a good reading. The fuse should show that the circuit is complete.

If you have the possibility, can you back up the firmware on the donor drive? If not still, you can try the pcb on he hard drive to see if it spins up.
