Hello,

I am new to the group and first post, but not new to Data Recovery. I have a Question on a WD 7500KMVV 750 GB Passport ext 2.5 USB drive. I recently received it in for data recovery and I have not dealt with these at all in the past - maybe cause they are just now surfacing in the DR world due to their state of technology... However, I am feeling intellectually challenged here because when I went to hitch the drive up to my DDI4 machine, I noticed that the USB connector is right on the PCB with no sata interface and (yes I have the videos Scott from our class but no time to dig threw the video vault lol jk) I am pondering how to get this type of drive hooked up to your DeepSpar. Do I have to swap the PCB Source with a Donor board of like type? Or do all of the connectors we have in the "white box" help us in that respect. I have the Seagate terminal cable but if my memory serves me correctly that was only to allow us to bypass the seagates comm to help assist in building a head map/media test to turn on/off heads and identify which heads are bad or failing.... I have seen similar posts out here regarding my situation, but nothing wrapped around a "deepspar" approach and would love to utilize our current skill sets. We also have R-Studio Network tech and netcard add on and forensics add on... Thank you in advance for your assistance.

DeepSpar has an add on for the DDI 4 just for those drives call them and discuss.

This picture was sent to me by Acelabs testicle support. I haven't tried it so do so at your own risk.

Yes, that's the way to go with the soldering work, it looks scary initially but when you train yourself after a while it gets easier.
Than you'll also need to handle decryption for my passport as the image doesn't go through the Initio chip.
If you want the easy way, you should get the DDIv4 add-on but they are not cheap.

I've done this several times and have even successfully imaged these drives with my DDI3, however the encryption has stopped me. I have a complete image on a WD 3.5" drive from one of these WD MyPassports from a while back but as yet have been unable to read it. Philip, did Ace Labs testicle support give you anything regarding how to work with the imaged drive once you have done the pictured modification?? Would love to know if so.

Cheers
Craig

HI Craig, in order to decrypt the image, you need to find out which encryption chip you had on the original 2.5" drive.
Than you should look for a 3.5" Bridge that has the same chip and connect it to your healthy image - you should gain access if no smartware password was set.

Cheers,
Oded

Simple as that, eh? Thanks Oded, I'll look into how to do such a thing and will give it a shot! The source PCB is 2060-771737-000 REV A and the bridge IC (encryption chip) is Symwave SW6316-3VB14. Better get hunting then! Thanks again.
