That's easy, we have two of these:

the ebay seller: precision*world
They have WIDE field of view, and if you wear glasses, it does not matter - you can still
focus sharply. They roughly $1000 and you don't need the camera unless you want to
capture images of your work.

On our first one, we bought a camera because I thought that I would just look at a 32" LCD
screen and do the work down below - NO, it's way too difficult and alot easier to just do your
microsoldering and inspections through the eyepieces.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I use this one:
http://www.firebox.com/product/2161/USB-Microscope

It is quite cheap and good enough for the job.

I use this:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Seben-Incognita-Stereo-Microscope-PC-USB-Eyepiece-VGA-/380248372499?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Toys_Hobbies_Educational_Toys&hash=item588891b513#ht_6766wt_1137

I don't see a real need for something as big as the "BOOM ZOOM" but I
guess everyone has different needs. It also comes with a free USB
microscope. Good luck in your search : )

I need the boom zoom at my age, everything is blurry and dark

Okay, I will be the one to ask the dumb questions. I was in one of
Scott's early classes.  We mentioned looking with the naked eye for
burned chips.  Then, doing a board swap if bad chips were found.

Some of you guys are obviously way more advanced than that now. (I am a law encorcement computer forensics guy.  So, I spend my day digging in file systems.)

I would like to hear what you guys are using microscopes to do?  What
is the hard drive situation in which you find them useful?  Are you just
identifying a problem, or do you use it live to guide a repair?

Thanks!!

Chuck

Chuck,

Examining pcbs for damage
Soldering/desoldering microcomponents (USB memory chips anyone?)
Ensuring solder joints don't overlap
Examining (removed) head assemblies for head damage
Are all just a few uses for such a device that I can quickly think of. I'm sure others may have more.

In addition to that, just today, I discovered a cracked tiny surface mount
resistor and on a usb flash stick I needed to get the part number of the
controller chip. No one would be able to do either task with the naked eye.
