        •       Hello,
        •       First of all I will introduce myself shortly becasuse it's my first post on
        •       the group here.
        •       My name is Willem Loman and I work for Hoffmann Investigations in the
        •       Netherlands.
        •       Last year I joined Scott's class in Atlanta. After the class we started
        •       with repairing harddisks which we receive for our fraud investigations.
        •
        •       Yesterday we received an 2.5" Hitachi harddrive which does not spin up at
        •       all.
        •
        •       I know that there can be several reasons for that but first of all I
        •       checked the pcb for tvs-chips.
        •       I found a component on the board near the powerconnector with a label 'D1'
        •       and a diode sign near it.
        •       There is only one of this component on the board but it looks like a tvs.
        •       Can someone tell me if it's a tvs chip or not.
        •
        •       There is a resistance of about 12 Ohms in both directions through the
        •       component.
        •
        •       I attached an image of the board.
        •
        •       Thanks in advance

        •       Yes based on proximity to power connector I would say it is a TVS Diode for
        •       the 5V supply 12ohms each direction is almost a short so remove it and try
        •       to power the drive. Report back on the progress for the benefit of others.

        •       Yes,
        •       I concur, a diode will have a high reading and a low reading , if it
        •       is the same both sides that is a short, causing the drive not to power
        •       up

        •       I don't like the term Break it off that suggest some rough treatment. It
        •       needs to be removed a soldering iron works best some choose to use side
        •       cutters to remove them just be careful not the break the traces that holds
        •       it to the board. Its also not a "fix" its a work around to get the drive
        •       powered up but not safe for long term use without a working TVS diode in
        •       place something took it out power surge etc that needs to be taken into
        •       account

        •       I just heat it up a bit with the iron then twist off...

        •       I removed the TVS chip but the disk still did not spin up. After that I
        •       checked fuse F1 and found out that there was no connection through the
        •       fuse. When I shorted the fuse the drive started making some noise but L1
        •       (coil?) became very hot and I switched the power off.
        •
        •       Is it possible that motor stucktion is causing the heat in L1?

 Recover JPEGS

        •       Sounds like the files are damaged. Rather than trying to 'repair'
        •       these files (which may be impossible if info is missing from them),
        •       maybe the next step would be to look at the source media (SD card,
        •       hard drive, or wherever they came from). Can you do a better recovery?
        •       Were the files just given to you already copied from somewhere? The
        •       source media is where you need to be looking (if you've not done so
        •       already). That's where your DR software stands the best chance, and if
        •       there are more serious problems that need to be addressed with
        •       hardware, then you're already set to work on it. Good luck!
