Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me out with this one.
I used to convert USB PCB'S of may passports 2.5" as shown in
PCB-1-S-1.jpg and PCB-1-S-2.jpg, this is the standard way as you can find all over the forums.

I received a 1TB drive as seen in the other 2 pictures PCB-2-S-1.jpg &
PCB-2-S-2.jpg which has completely different layout of the PCB, can someone advise how i can convert this one, which components need to be removed and where are the right soldering points?

Thanks

i have worked with that PCB before, its using the SYMWAVE usb 3.0 chip from the WD essential passort,  (Self Encrypting)  2 things you can do, 1 the same standard way of doing (remove the capacitors solder wires, or find a compatible sata board. & transfer the rom.  let me get to my desk ( i have all the notes there, in the mean time search ebay for a  3.5 WD Essential USB 3.0  bridge,, with a SW6316-3VB  Chip on it that is going to be your decryption module,

www.smsc.com/media/Downloads_Public/Data_Briefs/sw6316db.pdf heres the white paper on the SYMWAVE chip
so you can read up on it, i'll also get you a mathching sata PCB, part Number and sata points, like i said its at my desk and ill post it as soon as i get there

p.s.  Scott's techs pointed me in the direction to untangle all this stuff out..

thx Tony, much appreciated.
I tried to look for the 3.5" encryption bridge on ebay but couldn't find anything but a complete external unit.
Where did you get those?

I'll check in my lab, maybe i've got some around from old disks.

Cheers & Happy Easter

The part number you are looking for is 4061-705089-001

here an eBay link to the least expensive one

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCBA-4061-705089-001-Rev-AF-PCB-Control-Board-WD-MyBook-Essential-Data-Recovery-/200905585368?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2ec6e7f2d8

it has the SYMWAVE chip your looking for, once you clone out to another drive don't forget to set your HPA on it....i think used a 1.5tb seagate on it.

the way i tested it, was i did the SATA bridging (the old way) on my donor working drive, Cloned , HPA added my decryption module , Decrypted the Drive and saw content,,, then i moved my ROM from my patient to my donor pcb,,, (drive clicked)  found the SATA PCB, placed my donor ROM on it, & decrypted it directly, (no cloning)

So i realized its a head issue, i replaced the heads the patient detected in bios with 0.0 lba size. then learned about micro jogging, kinda like a fly height parameter need in the rom... by that time my regular duties came into affect after working on it for a week... its been on my station for a year... maybe i'll hook it up to SD tools and try to adjust parameters but unlikely.

let me know if it helps. and if your in the states e-mail me and i'll shoot you my number

USB Add-on for DDI4 can do this with out messing with usb/sat bridge soldering if you have one. Saves a lot of time for donor prep - but USB imaging is slower... If you don't have it then disregard. You will have to swap ROM from source to donor PCB still though. just my two cents...

Hi guys,

Quick question, Where do we connect the grounds from the SATA port? For power we are using the actual USB port correct?

Thanks

Hi,

Will any WD My Book Essentials Board work for the purpose of decrypting the data, as long as it has the symwave chip on it? I found a USB 2.0 unit with the drive and all, not sure if it has the symwave chip inside but I wanted to check with you first...

Thanks.

If you don't set the HPA the board comes up with the message: "The media is write protected" in windows under disk management...correct?

The My Book Essentials USB bridge board will have a printed number on the pcb & a number on the sticker

Match both of them & the USB bridge board should be compatible.

I'm going from a WD 1TB Passport drive to a bridge board for decrypting purposes, not sure what you mean by matching the PCB info...?
