Conceptually brilliant but its all in the detail. For example does it
really match the way signing appears on the ground but this can all be
discussed when the paper version is available.

Thanks Ray,

Imho the cycle signage in Ipswich is rubbish and needs to be replaced as a
separate project and as such the current signs shouldn't guide the creation
of the map if they are not right. For example there are signs to
'Augustine's Roundabout' on Foxhall Road for route 4A, but I don't think
that is a very useful destination to show on a map and the signage should be
changed to Broke Hall, Priory Heath and Warren Heath etc.

With regard to the map I suggest that we look to ensure that the main suburb
names are identified and accurately positioned and we will then encourage
the councils to update the signage. This is the approach that Cambridge
took. The first year they updated the map, the next year they updated the
signage and at the end of that every destination shown on a sign was also on
the map. Warren Heath is not identified.

Other issues to pay attention to...

Routes: I suggest we also ensure that all significant cycle routes are shown
and that all significant paved footpaths are shown. By significant I mean
one that would be useful for route planning purposes (all the minor
footpaths around blocks of flats are not therefore significant, but one
might show a single route through the estate to make it clear that one can
do that. There a lots of paved cycle routes still missing, for example
around Ireland Road.

Points of interest: Are all the appropriate points of interest shown? I
suggest we include schools (I think they are on there but it would be good
to add school names where there is space). Sports centres should be shown
with names (it names Northgate Sports centre but not Copplestone Sports
centre for example). Cycle shops (I think they are). Toilets? Museums? When
we meet lets bring any other city cycle maps we own and get ideas from them.
I think we assume that this map is for the tourist and leisure cyclist as
well as for the urban commuter, but all of these people are likely to be new
to the area.

'Advisory routes on quieter roads': These are coloured yellow and seem
pretty random. I suggest we go over this in detail, for example it shown
Cadlwell Hall Road as 'quieter' which is stretching a point. I would prefer
Crabbe St/Kemball St etc.

Underpasses: The underpass is not shown next to Kesgrave High School. Are
other ones missing?

Ipswich Golf course is not identified or named.

Peter

Is there some handy way we can contribute corrections etc without
bogging the e-group down with too much stuff?
E.g. all reply to 1 person only ?

My first is that coming from the station, in Princes St. there is a
marked cycle path (shared use) on the east side, from junction of
Portman rd to the street leading to Cecilia St. Very handy for travel
from centre to rail stn, but it took me ages to realise that was the
best route. No direction signage "Rail station" or "town centre"

On the teckie front, does anyone know how to print the download in
sections so A4 sheets can be taped together into a readeable size
map?

Good point. Please edit the web page and add your comments there.
http://groups.google.com/group/cycle-ipswich/web/cycle-map-for-consultation

When you press save it will ask if you want to send a message to everyone.
Just click on the 'skip this' button and it will change the page and not
email everyone about the change.

Note that the page is automatically listing all the emails so far that
mention the cycle map which is very clever of it so people who do want to
submit comments by email can still do so.

Peter

Peter,
This is absolutely brilliant but unfortunately usless except to make
it look like SCC and IBC are "doing" something. Cycle routes do not
have the legal status and protection RoW have and when and if the time
comes this map can just be disregarded. We have spoken recently but I
do not appear to have convinced you that a map without legal rights
and protection is just an exercise in PR by the LA's involved. Indeed
I know SCC RoW officers have been invovled in creating a cycle way
because that is easier than producing a map of RoW.
