Draft Ipswich Cycle Map 2008

We will soon receive paper copies of the map and then will arrange a meeting to go through it in detail.

Consultation of the 2008 map is now closed and the map has been published. This document is now a record of the consultation process, of the issues raised and whether the comments were accepted on not.

Issues

The following issues relate to the main map (not the town centre map). I suggest we wait for confirmation that our recommendations for the big map are going to be acted on before we tackle the local map. I also suggest we need to discuss with Lucy the scope of information that should be provided on the local map before starting.

The Issues beIow are divided up into sections and should be described carefully to help the mapping company accurately interpret what we are asking. All issues should have a unique identifiers to allow them to be tracked and grid references and a full description the problem. The grid references for the main map should be based on the letters and numbers around the map but with an additional digit to give the location more precisely. The location of all issues (except general issues) should also be marked on the paper map.

Locality name issues (L)

Points of Interest (P)

Issues to do with points of interest. Missing ones, misplaced ones or ones that should not be included, inappropraitely named ones, ones that should have names. I suggest we restrict ourselves to one relevant to tourists and visitors (musuems,  tourist information, toilets) and to locals (schools, and sports centres). I suggest that  schools should be named if there is room comfortably on the map for a name.

General issues (G)

Comments about non map issues or general comments about the maps that can\47t be pinpointed on the map.

G1: Can the square markers (A-E  on left side and 1-7 along top) be closer to the edge, possibly actually in a box touching the line (I missed them the first time I looked for them). - rejected

G2: Add school names to all schools where space allows - rejected

G3: Local cycle routes are shown in dark blue but the route numbers are in green. Should the route numbers not be on blue also - rejected (evidently green is the correct colour)

G4: National Cycle Route 1 is shown passing to the north of Ispwich and also into the middle of Ipswich. The northern route is marked as both National Route 1 and regional route 48. What is the future of this route, I understand it will be re-signed as regional route 48 in which case I suggest it is coloured as blue and the national route 1 symbol is removed. This would also help where the route goes down Shakespeare Road (A921) where it is currently signed as a national route (1), a regional route (48) and also a local route (11B) - rejected

G5: When routes have multiple numbers can the symbols be grouped together in clumps. Route 1/4A along Freehold road is a good example (C842). Depending on where you look it appears to be national route 1 or local route 4. - accepted

G6: The \47Advisory Routes of quieter roads\47 are very poor indeed (Cauldhell Hall Road is defined as \47quiet\47 but the parallel 20mph Kirby St/Crabbe St/Kemball Street route is not marked as quiet. I suggest we mark these only on the paper map (there are just too manychanges to list and a highlighter pen on paper will be much clearer). - some changes, but no consultation on this

G7: Either an additional symbol is needed for an underpass or the text for the 'toucan' symbol should be changed to 'toucan or underpass'  - no changes made

G8: If you are going to mark libraries the mark all of them (thereseem to be very few and Tomline Road library is missing). Why librariesand not post offices, museums, toilets and many other generalfacilities The important thing is consistency, if you have a featurethen it must be implemented accurately. I suggest libraries go andmuseums are put in its place of which there are fewer and they are more useful to the visitor. - only central library shown now

Of the general issues only 1 out of 8 was accepted fully

Advisory routes

When we come to mark advisory routes on the map we should bear these comments from a cyclist in mind.

  1. I would also query the marking of Hawthorn Drive(D1, C1)as \47quieter\47. I wrote to IBC back in 2003 (copy of letter attached)regarding the creation of a proper cycle path along the wide verge area as Ifelt then and still do now, that it could make a big difference to the number ofpeople making local journeys by bike... - rejected
  2. Kestrel Road and Goldcrest Road (C1)linkingthrough to Sprites Lane are lovely quiet roads to bike along and should bemarked as such. - rejected
  3. Church Lane (C1) and the underpass under the A14make a good quiet route through to Sproughton. I usually link with the HadleighRoad and a route through Chantry Park. -rejected
  4. It would also be useful to mark Aster Road andLupin Road (C2) in yellow together with the short section of path that leadsthrough to the London Road cycle path. - rejected
  5. Stone Lodge Lane West (C2) is quieter thanHawthorn Drive and along with Sheldrake Drive (D2, C2) could be marked inyellow. - rejected
  6. To reach the town centre I use the ToucanCrossing across Civic Drive to Elm Steet and then continue across Museum Streetin to the rest of Elm Street, turning right into Kingstreet past the back of theCorn Exchange to reach the cycle parking at the top of Queen Street. This routeis much better than FriarSt/Queen St which have more traffic, parked cars, busesetc. The whole of Elm Street and King Street could be marked inyellow. - partially accepted.
Of the above comments 1 out of 8 was partially accepted

Peter,
This is absolutely brilliant but unfortunately usless except to make
it look like SCC and IBC are "doing" something. Cycle routes do not
have the legal status and protection RoW have and when and if the time
comes this map can just be disregarded. We have spoken recently but I
do not appear to have convinced you that a map without legal rights

Is there some handy way we can contribute corrections etc without
bogging the e-group down with too much stuff?
E.g. all reply to 1 person only ?

My first is that coming from the station, in Princes St. there is a
marked cycle path (shared use) on the east side, from junction of
Portman rd to the street leading to Cecilia St. Very handy for travel
