Rationale:
We believe that BIO 110 does not provide an adequate foundation for success in BIO 275 because it superficially covers cell and molecular biology and genetics.
All community colleges that offer BIO 110 also offer BIO 111. All community colleges that offer BIO 275 also offer BIO 111, so we do not believe that this change would prevent any students from taking BIO 275.
We also do not believe changing this prereq would hurt students when they transfer to a senior institution. We are aware of no circumstance at NC Community Colleges or universities where BIO 110 fulfills a requirement that BIO 111 would not. We are aware of situations where BIO 111 fulfils a requirement that BIO 110 would not (many STEM majors).
Requiring BIO 111 instead of BIO 110 as a prereq for BIO 275 will allow the greatest mobility in choosing college majors and prevent credit loss.
This course is active within the CCL.

Good morning Kathy,
For FTCC, we agree and think removing BIO 110 is a good idea. As a non-majors biology it does not provide the foundation needed for BIO 275.
Thanks,
Cameron

Johnston CC supports this change. Here is a message from one of our instructors Dr. Justin Bradshaw:
We do not currently teach BIO 275 (we do BIO 175 instead) but I do not have a problem removing BIO 110 as a possible prerequisite for 175 as well if that is floated, I would say the vast majority of students taking BIO 175 with me over the years have either BIO 111/112 or BIO 168 as their prerequisite for admission and I agree with Kathy's rationale. There is certainly a lot of flexibility within BIO 110 in how they present genetics and cellular biology so depending on one's instructor BIO 110 could be quite poor or quite good preparation. As for the NC State e-mail from John we don't currently have a requirement of an organic chemistry lab course as a prerequisite either, and adding that I think would drastically reduce ability to enroll as very few of my students have had organic, but that does not seem to be the issue here thankfully. I hope this helps, e-mail me back if you have any questions and have a great day!

Kathy,
Removing the prerequisite actually creates a huge issue for our Bioprocess Technology program and our CE-CU Articulation from Bioworks to Bioprocess.
