CTPA:
I am looking for feedback on a proposal to remove BIO 110 as a prerequisite for BIO 275.  In order to propose a change to the NCCCS office, it is necessary to gather input.  It would be appreciated if you could reply by the end of April 2022.

Rationale:

We believe that BIO 110 does not provide an adequate foundation for success in BIO 275 because it superficially covers cell and molecular biology and genetics.

All community colleges that offer BIO 110 also offer BIO 111.  All community colleges that offer BIO 275 also offer BIO 111, so we do not believe that this change would prevent any students from taking BIO 275.

We also do not believe changing this prereq would hurt students when they transfer to a senior institution. We are aware of no circumstance at NC Community Colleges or universities where BIO 110 fulfills a requirement that BIO 111 would not.  We are aware of situations where BIO 111 fulfils a requirement that BIO 110 would not (many STEM majors).

Requiring BIO 111 instead of BIO 110 as a prereq for BIO 275 will allow the greatest mobility in choosing college majors and prevent credit loss.

Hi Kathy--

At NC State, BIO 110 transfers as the general biology lecture/lab for non-science majors, BIO 105 & BIO 106. Our 2-course sequence for science majors is BIO 181 and BIO 183  (BIO 112 & BIO 111, respectively.) BIO 275 is a direct equivalency for our MB 351/252, Microbiology & Lab.

MB 351/352 at NC State requires 1 of either BIO 181 or BIO 183 (BIO 112 & BIO 111) and one Organic Chemistry course w/lab, and while I cannot speak for each dept. I am not aware of a program on campus that allows BIO 105/106 to substitute for MB 351 enrollment on its own.

I hope this helps-John

Hi All,

We do not currently offer BIO 275 at CFCC, but we are comfortable with this proposal to remove BIO 110 as a prerequisite since it may leave students underprepared for mastery of the material in 275.

Thanks,
Lynn

Good morning Kathy,

For FTCC, we agree and think removing BIO 110 is a good idea. As a non-majors biology it does not provide the foundation needed for BIO 275.

Thanks,
Cameron

Hi everyone,

Following up on the response from NCSU/John Harrington, from the UNC System perspective around supporting students who transfer to one of our institutions from a NCCCS. BIO 110 is listed in the NCCCS CAA between the UNC System and NC Community Colleges along with BIO 111, and 112. All three are listed as UGETC, while BIO 275 is listed as a pre/major elective. Additionally, BIO 110 has been recently crossed-walked across all 16 universities TO AUTOMATICALLY RECEIVE an equivalency transfer through our Common Numbering System, while BIO 275 has not. I realize the question on the table is whether or not to make BIO 110 a requirement for BIO 275, but I think this additional information may be helpful in your decision. At this point we have not yet aligned upper-level courses such as the microbiology 351/351 NCSU mentions, only a portion of lower-level undergraduate courses. Also as John mentions, the courses aligned with General Biology lecture are Biology for non-majors would not serve as a pre-reqs for for upper-level microbiology, with the exception of UNC CH which states: Open to all undergraduates. This course is the prerequisite to most higher courses in biology. An introduction to the fundamental principles of biology, including cell structure, chemistry, and function; genetics; evolution; adaptation; and ecology.

Johnston CC supports this change. Here is a message from one of our instructors Dr. Justin Bradshaw:

We do not currently teach BIO 275 (we do BIO 175 instead) but I do not have a problem removing BIO 110 as a possible prerequisite for 175 as well if that is floated, I would say the vast majority of students taking BIO 175 with me over the years have either BIO 111/112 or BIO 168 as their prerequisite for admission and I agree with Kathy's rationale.  There is certainly a lot of flexibility within BIO 110 in how they present genetics and cellular biology so depending on one's instructor BIO 110 could be quite poor or quite good preparation.  As for the NC State e-mail from John we don't currently have a requirement of an organic chemistry lab course as a prerequisite either, and adding that I think would drastically reduce ability to enroll as very few of my students have had organic, but that does not seem to be the issue here thankfully.  I hope this helps, e-mail me back if you have any questions and have a great day!

Hi all,

Here is Caldwell CC's response, per David Deviney:

Off the top, I'm not a fan of this because it seems like we'd be adding a barrier, and maybe needlessly. If their email is true, it sounds like letting students do 110 and 275 isn't an issue other than perhaps a bit of rigor. I'm just not keen on adding more roadblocks for students.
