Is it me or the ending is buggy?

I know EXACTLY what to do, but since it's *realtime* (like Dragon's
Lair), I'm having a hard time with it. When you die, and you want to
retry, sometimes the games put me where I wasn't without objects I had
or with new objetcs. That's annoying. I can't finish this game
because of this buggy scheme.

Is there a way to pick up the book and running away? I think the only
way is to run away (in the photo lab), hide in the chaptel, return to
the photo lab, get the book, the climb upstairs to get the glass
shard, it Don with the hammer...well sometimes it don't work. When
Don catches me in the baby room, the glass shard disappear from the
inventory. I know I can use the broche to cut myself, but when I'm at
the altar and I have done the blood thing on the talisman, I always
die, I don't not what to do. The hint helper tells me to cut myself
but I just DID it. Anyone can help me here?

You should have traded that broche in for the Crucifix at the shop.
You're gonna have to start the whole game over now, unless you backed
up your savegames. You cant just start a new game on day 7
either,'cause it wont give the Crucifix,or the broche. I had kind of
the same problem during the endgame. I went into the darkroom before
doing anything else, and if you do this the game is un-winnable. You
have to go downstairs and find a certain item first. Sierra really
screwed up this time if you ask me.

I found another way out. When you get out of the dark room, you go
upstairs, take the secret passage in the gallery, go down and at an
intersection, I found out I could go down-left to the chaptel. At the
chaptel, there's an holy item.

It seems there are several ways to finish the game, but I still don't
understand how to get the book in the dark room. Each time you take
it, Don catches you. Of course, I loose then. When I retry, I find
myself OUT of the dark room WITH the book. It's impossible.

Here's how I did it: I went down through the secret passages to the chapel.
Presumably, this causes Don to go downstairs. Then I went right back up to
the third floor through the passages. I then went downstairs to the darkroom.
Voila.

I have to say that I basically enjoyed most of the game, though I
would have liked little bit of challenge in the puzzles. But I _hated_
chapter 7. It was too painful. And progressing to it basically roached
your save file so you were committed to it. Heaven help you if you
stumbled into the darkroom before it was time.

This is not true! You do NOT need Lou Ann's Crucifix to complete the game.
There is a substitute available else where (that can be obtained during chapter
7).

However, I believe that the items you have influences the exact game
ending you get. I had the crucifix and events during the chase scene
took a totally different course from the second time I had to do it
(my game crashed, and it _deleted_ my save file, so I had to start chapter
seven from scratch).

By the way, (and I'm about to give away the ending, so don't look if you
want to be surprised -- though if you haven't bought the game, don't bother)
is there any other game ending than chopping up Don and then blowing away
the demon? I mean, it was like something out of a USA Original Movie...
"Bad acting, everybody goes crazy, everybody dies, hysterical woman
suddenly becomes archmage and destroys demon threatening the world".
Wonderful.

I'll have to post my letter to Sierra demanding a refund (god, I love
their 30-day-no-matter-what guarentee). If I have to point out all the
shortcomings of Phantasmagoria, it's going to be a _LONG_ letter.

Oh well, 11th Hour is supposedly coming out this Tuesday (fingers are
crossed, anyway, but I know how that goes), so I'll get to play a _real_
game soon.

Well, I don't think so, I've started a new game on day
7, and I can play straight to the end. True, you can
trade for that holy item in the earlier chapter, but
if you failed to do this, you can find ANOTHER holy
item in the crypt!! One very good thing about this
game is that you can solve a problem in many different
ways, and this is one of the reasons that people will
find the game a bit easy, because you can try many
ways to solve a puzzle, thus will have less chance of
getting stuck. But I think this IS a good point, and
logical too. Besides, you can also try many ways to
solve a problem which comes out to be a wrong way.
e.g. The correct way to break open the wall of the
fireplace into the chapel is to use a sharp thin
knife, but the games also allow you to try breaking
the wall using your hammer and the iron bar.

True, the game does not feature many puzzles, but it does contain a lot of
secrets for the gamers to find out, it might not have a lot of
entertainment value in puzzle solving, but it does have a lot of
entertainment value in discovering the secrets, and unfolding the whole
picture of the story. And Chapter 7 is really exciting.

You're wrong about not being able to win starting from
chapter seven. You just need to get the stuff before starting
the chase. (The Shard, Doll etc.) Also, the hintkeeper walks
you right through it if you want him to. Since you don't have
the crucifix, you must find something else to use at the end.

I don't know if it's even possible to reply to an almost 30 year old thread, but that's exactly what I'll do just now.
