I could argue with a lot of it, but it actually engages with Apple at
Apple's level, attempting to understand Apple's approach to design and
to find the weaknesses of that approach.
Of course this means it will largely be as incomprehensible to the
iPad's geek critics as aesthetically-oriented praise of the iPad is.
This bit is particularly interesting (and is the reason I'd consider
this post on-topic for COLA):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
For better or worse, Apple has framed design discourses for nearly 15
years. Alternate design paradigms inevitably start out as un-Apples
before they find their voice.
You can see this massive influence in any significant Apple-era design
paradigm. Microsoft pretty obviously follows Apples lead. The Droid is
military-industrial, an obviously reactionary, un-Apple aesthetic.
Google, being a smart company, has quietly, in recent years, attempted
to rebel against the Apple aesthetic by moving away from rounded
corners and saturated colors. Along with the likes of WordPress, they
are pioneering something of an unboxed aesthetic in products such as
the Google Reader. (The Chrome logo is an uncharacteristic slip).
But these design rebellions are superficial. To craft a true design
rebellion, you must go where Apple doesnt go, innovation-wise. What
characterizes Ugly is Beautiful is a cobbled-together tinkerer look.
You cant fake this. You have to be in the disruptive-radical quadrant,
otherwise you look like you are merely executing a simple idea
incompetently.

Well, there's nothing wrong with giving the people what they think
they want... The people spend their money, and they're mostly happy.
Harley-Davidson comes to mind as a similar situation. They provide a
product that people want to buy, and there's nothing wrong with that.
But, of course, the more practical-minded find better values
elsewhere.

Sure it does. Perhaps you're brain hasn't improved over the ast 5 years but

You're not even smart enough to understand that the article linked to

work with the iPad -- and in fact provides a far more substantial
critique of Apple than you've ever managed.
Intel Xeon processors based on the Irwindale core were released in 2005. In

There *might* be some specific individual case where it compares with a new

Nonsense. They had a bad year, which is to be expected, when you're
selling luxury goods in the midst of the worst economic downturn in 80
years (thanks George). They'll be fine.
How has BMW done with their beamers the last 2-3 years in comparison?

Yes, believe it or not, but Harley is in kind of a unique market, and

OK, give us the facts (with link, please) regarding BMW's motorcycle
sales and profits, and compare them to Harley's, for the last 2-3 years.
"Harley Davidson needs to tear a page from BMW Motorcycle's play book.
BMW has as hide bound and traditional customer base as Harley ever
had, but rather than contracting their product line as Harley just did
by closing their Buell brand of sport bikes and offeringMV Agusta for
sale, BMW did the exact opposite. BMW has offered new models in
several non traditional market segments such as off road and
superbike. The result was a 2008 sales record and gain in market
share, and perhaps the smallest decline in sales of any major
motorcycle producer for 2009. In short broadening their appeal kept
their sales numbers up, and the firm is profitable. Sure some BMW
traditionalists sniff and turn their noses up at the new products.
Silly behavior as BMW still build a traditional bike for them. Harley,
by comparison ditched every model that does not fit their core, but
narrow, idea of what constitutes a "real Harley". Even on the few
occasions that Harley has built a credible bike in a non traditional
market segment, they fail to attract the new customers who would buy
these bikes. Their traditional customer, for example, would never
consider the Street Rod, built for only two years, but HD never
reached out to the sort of rider who would buy it, thus it failed to
sell. Great bike ( I have one ) but lousy marketing, yet HD is still
held up as an example in business schools everywhere."

Unlike BMW, Harley-Davidson didn't have nice government subsidies to get
it through the rough spot. Harley still has about half of the US market in
heavyweight bikes and about a third of the world market. They must have
been doing something right. And this quarter is the first one in 16 years
that Harley had an operating loss.

Harley recognizes their nick in the market, as do the other motorcycle
manufacturers. Use of a Porche designed engine in the V-Rod is a hook
into the future, as the governments continue to clamp further down on
emission control standards for larger displacement motorcycles.
Both BMW and Harley appeal to certain customers, IMHO where oil and
vinegar meet but do not mix. Similar to customers of Hondas, Suzukis,
Yamahas, Ducatti's, and etc.
Suzuki is testing the waters with their latest small bike, the TU-250. It
appears to use the engine of the GZ-250 but is fuel injected, has the look
of the UJMC of the '70s and '80s. For someone who wants a bike to go back
and forth to work, to college, doesn't have a need to ride on a super
highway, it appears to be the ideal truck. I kind of like the looks.
Their Gladius 650 cc twin naked bike also has a certain amount of sex
appeal, appears to be a competitor to the Italian offerings.
And last but not least, there is a Linux motorcycle in the off'ing to
those who can afford:

Whoever thought ''electro-motorcycles'' were heavy, slow, and probably

I see that you were not able to produce the financial details that I
requested, and merely quoted some blogger who thinks he knows how to run
Harley better than it's quite-successful executive team.
Good for BMW that they have successfully broadened their line and done
well. Harley is in a different position - they have a lot of riders who
love their products, but those riders seem to only want the one type of
product. Harley's smart-enough to know that they cannot win, going head-
to-head with the more mainstream manufacturers. Business is about making
money, not making a point.
The fact that Harley, with their very expensive luxury products, have not
done as well through the worst economy in 80 years as "some other
company" is not evidence of them "circling the drain". Most companies
have a losing year, from time to time, and survive (or flourish), you
know.
