On modern hardware running Windows 7 I installed VMWare, latest
version.
Then I installed Linux Mint Ubuntu (latest version, from an Indonesian
mirror), since it supposedly has the most apps preloaded. The
installation went OK and I played around in the desktop, even reading
a user's manual in a PDF viewer (not Adobe's).
I found Firefox in the "Favorites" section (it was version 4.0 rather
than 6.0, but no big deal I assume).
I started Firefox, it worked. I did not bother changing the root user
(in other words, I'm using the default 'mint' as user, and blank as
password)
I surfed to a static html web page and a .PHP web page and it worked
fine. So far so good.
I then went to a generic, safe, web porn site that seldom fails to
arouse me, nor do I ever catch any virus when surfing under Windows,
called the porn hub (one word).
I clicked on a porn star Rebecca Linares video. I got a "Adobe Flash
plug in fails to load " (something like that) [OK it says: 'the Adobe
flash plug in has crashed. No report available. Reload the page to try
again.] and a frowning face.
I could NOT get out--it froze my entire VMWare screen that was playing
Linux. I killed the screen, rebooted VWWare and tried
'playing' (running, that's their term) Linux Mint, but the system is
frozen with the screenshot showing the error message, as before. The
screen is frozen on the error message (and photos surrounding the
message showing various porn stars, etc).
Questions:
1/ how do I just kill Firefox--what keyboard commands? Mouse is not
working inside of Linux.
2/ do I need a firewall when surfing the net under Linux? Which one
and where for Mint?
3/ Same question for viruses.
PS--VWMare runs Window XP no problem. Why is that? Perhaps XP is
more stable than Linux?

The most apps preloaded? Not really.

Try updating. A fully updated Mint 11 has Firefox 6.

I was not able to reproduce that behaviour.
However, with the old flashplugin in mint (which is actually an old
prerelease since adobe didn't manage to release a final 64 bit flashplugin
yet) the videos wouldn't load.
After I removed the package "mint-flashplugin-square" and installed
flashplugin-nonfree, which uses the kludgy nspluginwrapper to load the 32
bit flashplugin, it loads and plays just fine.
But never did virtualbox nor firefox freeze in my tests.
Maybe vmware on windows or your graphics drivers are buggy?

For what should you need a firewall? You don't need to block incoming
connections; probably vmware has NAT for guests per default too? They
shouldn't harm you anyway since Ubuntu should have a fairly securely out-of-
the-box setup. You don't really need to block outgoing connections since
there shouldn't be any software on it you don't trust. Well, you probably
don't trust linux, but that's not what I mean. :)

This group is called comp.os.linux.setup, not comp.os.linux.advocacy.
Could you please, pretty please, keep your personal vendettas with the

Better still, could you pretty please also refrain from crossposting
"GNU/Linux versus Windows" advocacy and "I hate Microsoft" campaings to

Yes, I hate Microsoft, the company, too, and I don't even use Microsoft
Windows for that matter. But if I want to read filth from either side
of the fence, I'll join comp.os.linux.advocacy - a group which has for
long lost track of its name - (again) myself.
At this stage, I really don't feel a need to join comp.os.linux.advocacy

Anyone from comp.os.linux.advocacy who crossposts to another group in

There's a place for this sort of nonsense, and it's called

and have the courtesy of allowing other groups to carry on with their

This is a very good way to try Linux without having to make any significant changes. Did you install VMWare Player or VMWare Workstation? I use VMWare Workstation to create images for my team, so I paid for two licenses, one for Linux and one for Windodws.
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/cat/508?k=Linux%20Mint
Here is the entry for Linux Mint 11
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1050113
I downloaded mint11.zip - 939 MB and download speed around 500 KB/second.
Roughly 31 minutes download time estimated.
However the burst rate was up to 995 KB/second.
From previous experience on both Linux and Windows, this speed may have been limited by the storage speed of Windows 7. When using Linux as my base system I get downloads of 1-3 megabytes/second.
The actual download took about 20 minutes, with average download speed of around 800KB/sec.
I used Windows 7 extract all and defaulted to the directory provided.
I ended up getting mint11/Mint11/<files>
I opened the Readme.txt file which provided the passwords for user and root.
Since I already had VMWare installed, I just clicked the Mint.vmx file. Since I had both vmware workstation and player, and use notepad to view the VMX files when I need to edit them manually or locate password information, I right-clicked and used "Open With" and selected VMWare Player.
It took about 10 seconds for Mint to boot.
I started Firefox, which was in the favorites.
I noticed that the VM was prompting me to install the VMWare Tools. Which I know from experience is always a good idea. I just clicked the button provided and it mounted the ISO for the tools as a CD.
They did ask that I launch a terminal and use tar to uncompress the installer then run a command. They forgot to mention that I should do this as root.
I found the terminal app on the start menu.
I had to do use the following commands to see the compressed file:
$ ls /media
floppy floppy0 VMware Tools
$ ls /media/'VMware Tools'
manifest.txt VMwareTools-8.4.6-385536.tar.gz
To extract the tools, I used the tar command as follows:
$ tar xvzf /media/'VMware Tools'/manifest.txt VMwareTools-8.4.6-385536.tar.gz
(bunch of extract messages)
$ cd vmw*
$ sudo ./vmware-install.pl
I accepted all of the defaults and everything went smoothly.
For those who are not familiar with VMWare, the default image is designed to work reasonably well with a variety of different VMWare systems, including Player, Workstation, Server, ESX, and so on. Installing VMware tools optimizes the image for the specific VMWare product being used, as well as leveraging the VMWare interfaces to the optimized Windows drivers.
It's possible that since you did not have the VMware tools installed, which would make video and 3D graphics much more limited.
I pulled up package manager to see if any upgrades were needed.
There were 33,708 packages listed, 1542 of which had been installed.
I checked FireFox to see if there were updates needed.
It showed that the installed version was 4.01 but latest version was 6.0
It had already been marked for automatic upgrade.
I also found the adobe-flashplugin and marked it for install.
This resulted in other dependencies being flagged, which I accepted.
I then hit the Apply button to apply all of the reccomended updates.
Adding the Adobe flash plug-in resulted in removal of the mint-flashplugin and mint-meta-codecs.
I decided to go ahead and go with the change since your porn site probably needed the Adobe flash.
I looked at the details in the install dialog to see if there were any problems, but this wasn't necessary. Everything had gone smoothly.
The software manager is a pretty version of package manager and much more artistic. There were 96 media players available, most with both the GPL drivers and the proprietary drivers either installed or available as options. This is different from Ubuntu distributions which only include the GPL drivers and converters.
I started firefox and checked the version. It was still 4.01
I also checked the plug-ins
There were several media plugins including:
QuickTime (thank you apple)
RealPlayer9 (thank you Real Media)
Shockwave Flash both 10.3.d180 and 10.3.d183
Windows Media Player Plug-in (Gecko Media Player - thank you Mozilla).
Next I pulled up YouTube on the browser. The video started but there was no sound. I had to turn up the volume on both Windows and Linux and then the sound worked fine.
Since you didn't specify a porn site, I tried one I knew.
When I tried to start the vidio with with WMP option, it gave me mplayer as a default option, and it worked fine. The RealMedia player also worked well. The downside of RealMedia is that this was a pay-per-minute site and the player wouldn't let you skip or fast-forward.
I did try to run the Silverlight player, but as I suspected, it tried to install Silverlight.
I knew that we needed the Linux equivalent so I checked software manager.
This is always better than going to some unknown sight that might try to feed you malware or spyware.
The moonlight packages, including manual, chromium, core, and mozilla packages were available.
Now we get to the downside. Silverlight is Microsoft's proprietary application and media format, and subject to change without notice. The Moonlight player started immediately, but since the media format was no longer compatible, all that appeared was a white screen.
Moral - don't use silverlight as your SOLE video distribution format.
Linux media players support about 20 different media formats, but if Microsoft doesn't want Linux users to play Silverlight media, they can stop it pretty easily.
Standard warning note. Using the very newest version of a release, a "development" version, is often risky. This is especially true of Ubuntu

Why did you go to teh Indonesian mirror? Was that the closest one?

Mint has lots of apps, over 33,000 packages, and some packages can have as many as 30-40 applications within them.

The Adobe Acrobat Reader is available as a Mint install package, but again, the user has to explicitly accept licenses from Adobe before installing and running it. This is a legal issue, not a technical one.
> I found Firefox in the "Favorites" section (it was version 4.0 rather

The upgrade was easy enough to install, using the package manager or software manager. Software manager lets you install packages one at a time, and go "shopping" for what you want. Package manager lets you select as many packages as you want, then installs them one at a time.

By default, Mint starts you up as "user" but you can use root to add additional accounts and set passwords to prevent security issues. It's always a good idea to change the default passwords anyway.

Sounds to me like you needed to install the VMware tools into your Linux image. VMware probably prompted you to do so but you probably ignored that prompt.
> Questions:
> 1/ how do I just kill Firefox--what keyboard commands? Mouse is not

If the mouse isn't completely gone, you can just use xkill, which will tell you to click the application you want to kill, and pops up the mouse curser with an x or skull and crossbones.
> 2/ do I need a firewall when surfing the net under Linux? Which one
> and where for Mint?
If you use the NAT setting, you will be using the VMware firewall which will be protected behind any firewalls you've set up for Windows 7.
In addition, there is a firewall and iptables based filter protecting the Linux system by default.
> 3/ Same question for viruses.
Virus concerns on Linux are different than for Windows.
Most malware based on the usual attack strategies for Windows viruses don't even work on Windows. At best, you might get a warning that you can't run an ActiveX control, or just get a human readable script showing you the offending VBScript or JavaScript that tried to pull in the virus. Very embarassing for the person who sent you the virus.
If you share files with Windows users, the Windows users can put viruses on your drive, if other windows users open that infected shared files, they could get infected too. The Linux system won't be impacted, but can become a carrier. If this is the case, you can have a Windows client run it's virus checker on the shared drive.
There are both Open Source and Commercial antivirus packages available for Linux. Symantic and McAffee offer their own software and update subscriptions for some of the Open Source packages - they are selling a service for an annual fee.
The other common way to get a virus is to download it from an unknown publisher via a web site, bbs, or USB. It's a bit like having unprotected sex with a prostitute. She make look cute, even sweet and innocent, but you have know idea who she has been with in the last few hours, let alone the last few months.
This is why Linux distributions usually offer package managers that allow users to download upgrades and new software from a trusted source. If you want commercial software for Linux, the download process is usually more rigorous and you get a copy that his been tagged in various ways to help identify anyone who might attempt to pirate or corrupt and distribute software.
> PS--VWMare runs Window XP no problem. Why is that? Perhaps XP is
> more stable than Linux?
I'm not terribly familiar with the Linux Mint distribution, and have newer particularly liked the Ubuntu distributions because they don't follow the standards required to install and manage high end commercial software. IBM, Oracle, SAP, and many others have great support for LBS 3.x standards and packaging, but Debian doesn't want to use any non OSS software and doesn't want to license any patents, even on a "Free to OSS" basis. Ubuntu is a bit more pragmatic, and Mint is more vendor friendly.
I have had better results with Fedora, OpenSUSE, RHELD, and SLED, all of whom have adopted the industry standards.

If you have any suggestions--I'm going to reply to chris with my
questions--in getting Linux Mint working on VMware Player please let
me know.
RL
You work for Microsoft, and are trying to make the Linux advocates
look bad. Very clever. For a long time I thought you were a nut job
but there's perhaps method to your madness.
RL
But I downloaded Mint just now from an Indonesian website from the
official Mint website. You think they had an old version of Mint?
Perhaps, but it's not good that Mint org would allow that. But I'll
do this--I'll download a Mint .iso from a US website.

No, you are not paying attention, typical of zealots, no offense. I
said I'm running Linux Mint from VMware. Do you know that that is?
If not, Google it.

OK, fair enough, perhaps I have an old version. Also I am running 32
bit not 64. It make a difference.

Maybe. But VMware on Windows works fine for XP. The drivers are
native Intel (graphics card on chip) drivers.

OK, I buy that.
I'll reinstall Linux from a US server .iso and report back. Thanks

"Enjoyful"? That a word? ;-)
Actually I don't mind watching porn in Windows, as I've never caught
anything from doing that, but I thought Linux would be an even safer
way of doing that--but so far I'm proved wrong.

That's not what I mean. Update the running system. The iso images are not so
often updatet with Ubuntu and Mint.

I know of the appliances. But I also read from you:
"Then I _installed_ Linux Mint Ubuntu (latest version, from an Indonesian
mirror), since it supposedly has the most apps preloaded. The
_installation_ went OK and I played around in the desktop, even reading
a user's manual in a PDF viewer (not Adobe's)."
It was not clear that you just installed the appliance.

Don't know. I tested the 64 bit version.
But you can check the flash version easily on
http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
Should say
"You have version 10,3,183,5 installed"
and not 10.3.162.x

Then maybe the virtual graphics drivers from vmware?

I wasted an hour of my life downloading from a US site--then I find
it's EXACTLY the same size as the Indonesian site. But anyway I
reinstalled Linux. Same problem as before: it dies on Flash sites
(though the Adobe test page loads OK). Version is 1.0 of Firefox 4.0
for Linux. It DIED again, and I have to reinstall as I type this...
this sucks.
OK it has 100% died because I guess I did something in sudo.
Please read this link: http://www.johannes-eva.net/how-to-install-firefox-on-ubuntu-linux
Tell me: do you think this is the best way to install (upgrade)
Firefox? I doubt it. I did follow his directions but the net result
is I cannot get into the /opt directory from Home or Download folder
(that is, I cannot copy or move any folder in Downloads, after I
extract from the .tar file the Firefox folder, into /opt--copy and
paste using the File Manager fails). There has to be a better way.
On top of that, I lost the 'gear symbol' in the lower left corner,
hence i have to reinstall. Yes I did do the Sudo thing as he
instructed, but it only worked to delete the Firefox that was there; I
could not transfer the 'new' (downloaded) Firefox from Downloads
folder.
Please work with me. This is not trolling, it's frustration. I will
reinstall Linux Mint from inside VMware now...

one to install Firefox? (that is, reinstall)
I just clicked on "Package Manager"...now I'm browsing for Firefox...I

Yes, you were forced to stare at a progress bar for one hour not able to do
anything else in this time. It's always hard to download things, yes. But
have you heard about this brand new paradigm of "multi tasking"? This could
be the solution!

It's probably because you expect it to be a windows replacement instead of a
different operating system where things work differently.

Actually I now think that the vmware virtual graphics drivers have a problem
when this happens. Certainly doesn't happen with virtualbox and the virtual
Chrome graphics card.

I don't think I can help you further.
First, you should use the update manager. Then firefox already will be
updated to version 6.
Then, firefox is not in "Communication", it is in "World Wide Web" as you
might expect - but it's actually easier to use the search box on all
packages instead of browsing for it.
If you can't figure it out I can't help you.
But I really have to wonder what kind of programmer when you are so
reluctant to learning new stuff.

can anyone tell the group which one of the three icons mentioned

asked if you want to boot the new install or continue testing the

Thank you for pointing out the cross-post. I hadn't realized that this had been cross-posted to the other groups, and I was responding to an article in comp.os.linux.advocacy (COLA).

Agreed. Not sure why I can't see the cross-post list. I've been using Google groups and it usually shows these, and I remove cross-posts when I see them.

Others are heavily dependent on the continued success of the Microsoft Monopoly. We have several trolls in COLA who make their living by writing VB to access SQL Server via IIS. In their spare time, they post to COLA.

After a recent Supreme Court ruling which ruled that corporations and non-profit organizations are "people too" an therefore entitled to unrestricted freedom of speech, this is also how our election campaigns are now funded. The Koch brothers have contributed millions of dollars to political campaigns on behalf of the TEA party, Fox News gives favorable coverage to the far Right, and MSNBC gives coverage to the far Left. Fox uses the $billions from it's entertainment business and shows like American Idol to fund Anti-Liberal Pro-Conservative Pro-TEA Party programming on 3 of it's Cable channels.
This means that companies like Microsoft (who is part owner of MSNBC), can funnel unlimited funds into political activities in support of candidates from BOTH parties - assuring that they are above the law, especially in the United States.
Of course, Microsoft isn't the only one. These days we have huge corporation draining $trillions from the global economy while the politicians they funded make sure that all attempts to regulate them, including staffing the regulatory agencies - is completely blocked, and that the budgets to regulate them are cut to the bone - without actually eliminating the regulatory agencies.
> A few wikileaks to open up scrutiny of the funding routes and who's who in
> the chain of command could be a starting point.
To wikileaks - cola troll funding is like a gnat in a room full of killer bees. They might mention the gnats, but the $millions going into cola, if even that, are nothing compared to the $trillions being funneled into big takers like Halliburton, Bank of America, Citibank, Chase, American Coal, and Exxon.
By funding George W Bush, and congressional and Senate candidates who can block Obama, these companies have been able to drain about $14 trillion from the global economy and make it "disappear", and do it tax-free.
COLA is at best a dozen or so full-time WinTrolls who might be getting a few thousand dollars a month each. But it has been effective up to now. In spite of the fact that the PC industry has collapsed as a result, Microsoft has been able to force OEMs to put Windows 7 on every Netbook (notice most stores don't sell Netbooks anymore), and PCs (most PC divisions are now losing money).
HP and Dell are both bleeding red from their PC units. Gateway went Bankrupt, E-Machines went south before that, and the only PC companies actually making money are Acer and ASUS who make sure that every machine they sell is "Linux Ready".
Meanwhile, Kindle, Android, and iPads, as well as Apple are posting huge gains and nice profits on UNIX and Linux based systems. In effect, *nix is killing Microsoft from the underbelly.

As mentioned above, USA Politics is now in unprecedented territory, where well the very rich can buy elections. They can keep the opposition from showing up at the elections (mass mailings were sent out telling people to vote - the day AFTER the real election - but only sent to democrats).
In very liberal districts, Republican poll workers systematically challenge voters, telling them that even though their name is in the book, they have to bring in their driver's license, social security card, bills from the utility company... to turn away anyone who "Looks Liberal". Election laws require only that they be registered to vote n days prior to the election - if their name is in the book, and they give the correct name and look the right age - they are supposed to be allowed to vote.
In Republican districts, there are no challenges at all. In fact, if you know grandma's in the nursing home, you could give her name and vote again.
If you're expecting the United States to stop Microsoft, forget it. They were major contributors to candidates who opposed candidates who had expressed a desire to regulate Microsoft, including George W Bush and Barak Obama. Microsoft DIDN'T want Hillary Clinton or John McCain getting elected, because both felt that Microsoft SHOULD have been regulated, instead of the wrist-slap they got on the antitrust case.

Sauerkraut. Maybe. 8)
At least sauerkraut, coleslaw, bubble & squeak and other cabbage dishes
have some use, unlike Dopez. Even rotten cabbage makes good fertiliser.
Dopez, OTOH, makes nothing but retarded comments.

The corporate media now considers Right to be the new center.

**Far** Left? Pffff. NeoLiberals at best; all of those Right of
center.
Don't forget for a second that MSNBC fired Olbermann.
It's amazing how the politics have shifted so far Right in the USA
such that Obama and his ilk get called Leftists by the media
(and working people parrot that drivel).
You have to look really hard these days
to find a politician who is actually anywhere Left of center.
I gave up on television and corporate broadcast media years ago
specifically because they DON'T have any ACTUAL Progressives on.
(The PBS NewsHour is majority-owned by a Republican.)
The only broadcasts I have found
that still have anyone on who is actually Left of center
is Pacifica Radio.

The corporate media echo chamber is all about corporatism.

Fewer than 1 in 6 in the Congress are self-described Progressives
--with many of those disingenuous bastards
voting for more militarism and cuts to the social safety net.
There is only ONE Progressive in the Senate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congressional_Progressive_Caucus#Senate_members
Note also (just below that) Pelosi
who flip-flopped as soon as it was no longer politically expedient
for her to *call* herself Progressive--though she never *actually*
was.
Corporate media not only won't be showing Progressives in a positive
light,
they will go out of their way to find the footage
that makes sure that any Progressive on the air looks like a buffoon.

Yup. Fortunately, the marketplace is doing it.
Most folks who are buying stuff aren't buying desktop space heaters.
They're buying handheld thingies where Wintel isn't a serious factor.
...and the folks who *are* running desktops
continue to use their old hardware
which was powerful enough years ago to do all their tasks.
The **smart** ones are looking at how they can use Linux
when their much-needed XP patches go bye-bye.

Chris--thanks for your help but I could not get Linux Mint to run in
VWware--so I gave up. I went back to surfing porn using Windows 7,
and since the one virus I caught in Win7 was not from porn surfing but
was from a USB stick that had a program I unwisely ran that had a
virus on it, I feel that there's no need for Linux.
Too bad, as I was willing to give Linux another chance. But it failed
me once again.

YOU got me into VMware. YOU. Now you claim it's my fault?
Big picture: Mint *did* install and *did* work in VWware on a NON-porn
website. It failed on porn. I gave up on Mint and Windows XP in
emulation in VMware works fine. But I found that Windows 7 is even
better and just as safe (since more recent)--since btw running WIndows
XP in VMware does not mean you cannot screw up your hard drive with
some virus I've read--so why bother with an older OS? Just stick with
Win7 with a decent AV and firewall. And that's what I'm doing now.
I am jerking off to Rebecca Linares watching porn on W7 just fine,
and, I hate to break your heart Norm, but I'm not thinking of you.
Goodbye Linux (l)user and, as usual, thanks for nothing you good for
nothing.

I'm sure you have been directed to http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
before.
The bottom line is a quote from it:
"If you really just want Windows without the malware and security issues:
Read up on good security practices; install a good firewall, malware-
detector, and anti-virus; replace IE with a more secure browser; and keep
yourself up-to-date with security updates. There are people out there
(myself included) who've used Windows since 3.1 days right through to XP
without ever being infected with a virus or malware: you can do it too.
Don't get Linux: It will fail miserably at being what you want it to be."
I suggested VMWare to you, you're the one that can't get into it.

Well Ray, that's a hell of a snip job if I ever saw one. In your
reply to Chris you saw you couldn't get Linux Mint to run in VMWare yet
here you are telling us it did install and run... hmmm. And as for
whatever sites you want to surf, that's your business. But maybe, just
maybe Linux is looking out for your health. Linux wouldn't want you to
go blind.
