In Malware exploits, unfortunately:

"F-Secure: Android Malware Ecosystem Resembling Windows"

(boy, how is that for damning with faint praise?)

ecosystem-resem/240154878>

"The number of new... continued to rise by 49% from the previous
quarter... 91.3 percent of these were Android and ...8.7 percent
Symbian...."

FYI for the math-challenged, 91.3% (Android) + 8.7% (Symbian) =
100.0%.

Which means that all non-mentioned mobile OSs were 0.0%.

That is a good example of dishonest quoting! Here is the complete paragraph.

<quote>
The number of new mobile threat families and variants continued to rise by
49% from the previous quarter, from 100 to 149. 136, or 91.3 percent of
these were Android and 13, or 8.7 percent Symbian. Q1 2013 numbers are more
than double that of a year ago in Q1 2012, when 61 new families and variants
were discovered.
</quote>

*136* new malware families and variants for Android in three months.

*136* is less than then average number of new malware families and variants
for Windows per *hour*.

> 100.0%.

> Which means that all non-mentioned mobile OSs were 0.0%.

Well, that is an /improvement/ from a year ago when it was claimed in COLA
that all (as in 100%) new mobile malware was targeting Android.

Regards.

Like every other example of sensationalist Android "malware" FUD, the
article fails to clarify that this so-called "malware" is actually
nothing more than social-engineering, every example of which requires
the user to voluntarily and deliberately install and run it, and as such
has precisely zero to do with software security.

This is no more "malware" than persuading some gullible user to run:
'su -c "rm -fr /"'

Compare that to the Swiss-Cheese security of Windows, where one can be
infected just by visiting a Web page or reading an email.

Much of Windows malware was also based on social engineering.

Your bias is showing.

The reality is there are only two OSs where there users have a significant
risk of malware: Windows and Android. You can twist this all you want, but
it is the truth.

Bullshit.

<quote>
It turns out that the "Dirty USSD" exploit demonstrated yesterday on Samsung
devices affects ***all Android devices*** running anything below Android
4.1.x aka Jelly Bean. During his presentation, Borgaonkar mentioned that the
same attack can be used to "kill" SIM cards.... ... vulnerable to remote
wipe or permanent destruction of the SIM card - if they haven't been updated
since June. He added that all Android devices running Android 2.3.x
(Gingerbread), 3.x (Honeycomb), 4.0.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) and 4.1.x (Jelly
Bean) are vulnerable to this flaw if they had not been updated since June.

Hole in Android kernel gives full read-write permissions to all physical
memory

The security hole resides in the Android kernel of Samsung handsets running
an Exynos 4210 or 4412 processor. While it creates a new and easier method
for end users to root their devices, it also gives installed apps full
read-write permissions to all physical memory. That, in turn, allows apps to
gain unfettered control of a handset, opening the door to malware with
rootkit-like capabilities. It also allows one app to monitor data processed
by a second app or the operating system.

Now that *is* dishonest!
*The* malware magnet remains Windows, by orders of magnitude.
That in spite of the fact that there are already half as many Android users
as there are Windows users, and that sales of Android devices are *double*
the sales of Windows devices.

How would you know? Are you running windows? I haven't yet had any
malware in over a year now. So it must be your FUD.

Unfortunately, the truth is that the words that you quoted above very
clearly stated that this malware metric is for ***MOBILE***
applications.
