What does the number in parenthesis at the end of every app version mean?

When I document stuff on this newsgroup, I often document the version,
where the version is often a "normal looking" version sequence _plus_ a
trailing number in parenthesis.

What's that number in parenthesis?

It's not the API version (as that's elsewhere).
o Is it part of the version in a meaningful way?

Anyone know more about this parenthetic trailing addendum to the version?

UPDATE:

Here are some supporting screenshots:

As a datapoint, today I created a test app, whose version number became:
o Version 1.0 (1)

I tried overwriting it, which works just fine, but the version remained.
