ERROR:
o NewPipe 0.20.1 error: Could not parse website
WORKAROUND:
o Apparently Google changed 'something' in their YouTube API (again).

HARDWARE/OS:
o Moto g(7) Android 10 (Security patch level: August 1, 2020)

1. I never use the YouTube app (and can't understand anyone who does).
Instead, I watch YouTube documentaries using NewPipe freeware (no ads).
NewPipe has been my YouTube-on-steroids replacement for years!
2. Recently, suddenly I was getting this error on every video:
"Could not parse website
org.schabi.newpipe.extractor.exceptions.ParsingException:
YouTube did not provide player config even after three attempts
at org.schabi.newpipe.extractor.services.youtube.extractors.
YoutubeStreamExtractor.onFetchPage(YouTubeStreamExtractor.java:664)"
<https://i.postimg.cc/DZrB25z2/newpipe01.jpg>
3. I updated to the latest NewPipe 0.20.1 published 10 days ago
But it had the same problem on every YouTube video-playing attempt.
<https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/issues/4572#issuecomment-714825257>
4. Googled and found I wasn't the only one with that specific error:
5. Dug around and finally found a workaround posted a few hours ago:

An extra "dot" crept in; this is the correct URL to the NewPipe workaround:

Unfortunately, at least for me,
that hotfix from GitHub NewPipe project ( 0.20.2 ), that I
installed yesterday,
still gives me the same error on most YT pages.

Hi Poutnik,

You've helped me a lot over the years (mostly on custom mapping)...

o <https://i.postimg.cc/XYN9Khm3/newpipe04.jpg>
o <https://i.postimg.cc/3xLmt1QG/newpipe05.jpg>

I can't imagine _anyone_ using the "youtube" app on Android
o As NewPipe is to YouTube what a chainsaw is to a butterknife.

Up until this week, I was using version 0.19.5 as shown below:
o <https://i.postimg.cc/g0wQpDwx/newpipe01.jpg>
o <https://i.postimg.cc/2yYK4N0W/newpipe02.jpg>

As of yesterday, I've been using this new "polish" version of 0.20.1
on my Moto G(7) Android 10, T-Mobile phone.
o <https://i.postimg.cc/XYN9Khm3/newpipe04.jpg>

Note you wrote 0.20.2 but mine is "0.20.1 polish" from this zip location:

We can compare running the same videos if you like.

When I press "Trending", these are the top five trending YouTube videos:

1. Apex Legends Season 7 - Ascension Launch Trailer

2. Doing Kylie Jenner's Halloween Makeup!

4. Halloween Stereotypes

5. Sony PS5 Unboxing - The Beast is HERE

Each of those "trending" videos played fine for me just now.

Hi Arlen, thanks a lot for your effort.

Fortunately, the problem is already solved.

I have installed the fix over the 0.20.1
For some strange reasons , both versions 0.20.1 and fixed 0.20.2
somehow coexisted
and I was in 0.20.1 while thinking it was 0.20.2.
I had to uninstall the old and installed fix then. Then it worked.
Now I use the regular 0.20.2 from the official F-Droid NewPipe
repository :

Hi Poutnik,
Thanks for letting all of us know about the newly fixed Newpipe 0.20.2!
o I even use NewPipe on my PC under emulation (where it works rather well)

Hence, I first downloaded the package to my PC & installed it there
o And then I slid the APK over to my mobile device & installed it there
<https://archive.newpipe.net/fdroid/repo/>

These Google scrapers are _fantastic_ (where Google keeps changing things)
1. NewPipe (youtube red on steriods) <== continually updated
2. Aurora (Google Play with privacy) <== continually updated
3. AddressToGPS (Google address scraper) <== this hasn't been updated

Google apparently tried to shake off those wolves, but NewPipe keeps up:
o NewPipe_v0.20.0.apk, 7794951, 2020-Oct-04 10:57
o NewPipe_v0.20.1.apk, 7796581, 2020-Oct-17 07:35
o NewPipe_v0.20.2.apk, 7797121, 2020-Oct-28 07:20

This is the APK I'll use on my PC & on mobile to manage YouTube videos:
<https://archive.newpipe.net/fdroid/repo/NewPipe_v0.20.2.apk>
Name: NewPipe_v0.20.2.apk
Size: 7797121 bytes (7614 KiB)
SHA256: 1D8421275B89225F34BE0C1ED3A97CEC58AC7EF0E31BA928D3E714F13D03D5DF
Note: Mobile apps run better on a PC due to GUI, CPU & memory advantages.

Two comments I can make for those who do NOT use NewPipe, and who,
therefore, may be using the YouTube app to view YouTube videos.
1. You're crazy if you still use YouTube (for a bunch of reasons)
2. You're crazy if you don't use NewPipe (for those same reasons)

There are a _lot_ of reasons, which folks can read on the schabi site:
o <https://newpipe.schabi.org> by Christian Schabesberger

The key features I love about NewPipe over YouTube are:
1. Anonymity (you can even subscribe anonymously)
2. No ads (hence movies play faster, sooner, better)
3. Downloads (you can download any format, quality, strip audio, etc.)

But there are plenty of other advantages, e.g.,
A. The GUI is simply fabulously efficient (settings for everything!)
B. Picture in Picture & background playing & playlist queues
C. Free and open source & continuously updated despite Google's ploys

For those poor people stuck using YouTube, check out these screenshots:

Hi Arlen,

what I do not like on NewPipe 0.20.x versions is
they moved the share button to the player window.
So you must actually start playing the video to get link to it.
As I use link sharing quite often.

Devs decided it is rarely used feature so they moved it away from
the video info screen.

But it is logically so wrong,
as sharing link has nothing to do with player functionality.
It is like if you had to start downloading a file in the browser
to get its link.

There is the regression issue raised for it:

https://github.com/TeamNewPipe/NewPipe/issues/4039

Hi Poutnik,

Given NewPipe freeware is the finest YouTube payware replacement on the
planet, I'm a bit confused by what you wrote, so please take a look at
these screenshots I just made for you to test out NewPipe sharing:
o <https://i.postimg.cc/MpcJdvbq/share01.jpg> Bring up NewPipe 0.20.2
o <https://i.postimg.cc/Zqptz2MQ/share02.jpg> Search for Feynman Lectures
o <https://i.postimg.cc/9M23m13Q/share03.jpg> While playing, tap to share
o <https://i.postimg.cc/d1jbLdvm/share04.jpg> Without playing, longpress search results to share
o <https://i.postimg.cc/dt1bVLfr/share05.jpg> The result is then shared

> Devs decided it is rarely used feature so they moved it away from
> the video info screen.

I don't remember where it was in prior versions, but I just tried sharing
without playing the video, and it shared in both cases that I tried:
a. While playing the video, I tapped on it, & that brought up a share menu
o <https://i.postimg.cc/9M23m13Q/share03.jpg>
b. While NOT playing the video, longpressing on search results also shared
o <https://i.postimg.cc/d1jbLdvm/share04.jpg>
c. Then I scrolled through the zillions of ways to share the results
And arbitrarily chose to share to PulseSMS as a quick test.
o <https://i.postimg.cc/dt1bVLfr/share05.jpg>

I'm using the same version you are which was released a couple of days ago
o Version 0.20.2

Can you explain the steps you are doing given these search results?
o feynman lectures

> There is the regression issue raised for it:

I didn't look there as I tested it for myself, where I only ask you what
you want that is different from simply tapping on the (not playing) video
after searching for "feynman lectures" (which, BTW, are well worth
watching, as I've watched them all dozens, maybe scores of times, as you
can't soak up quantum mechanics on the first, tenth, or hundredth pass!).

Ah, you are right ! Thanks.

There was a share button in 0.19.x in video details page,
when you opened a search result item.

I remember I did try long press on result list yesterday,
and seeing the context menu,
but for strange reasons I missed the last sharing item.

I find the lost sharing from details page more handy, but even
this is good.

Thanks for checking back as I was confused by what you asked.
o I'm glad to be of help to you and to others who lurk on the conversation.

Personally, I thing NewPipe is one of the finest examples of open source
freeware for mobile devices on the planet, so I am happy to promote its
use, particularly since it's like SharePod was to Apple iTunes, in that it
does everything, for free, that Google YouTube doesn't want you to do.

BTW, you've helped me a lot over the decades, particularly with modifying
topo maps and tracks for backcountry off-trail hiking in rough country; so
I'm glad to help you back on NewPipe (which I've been using for years).

I've tried to find alternatives on iOS to NewPipe, which the apologists
"claim" exists, but I've tried all the suggested iOS apps (e.g., MyTube,
VideoTube, etc.), and they literally suck by way of comparison. They're
maybe not as bad as is YouTube, but they're nothing like NewPipe in terms
of awesome functionality (which I don't claim lightly).

Anyway, I know you also have higher degrees (yours is in Chemistry), where
you may enjoy those Feynman Lectures on Quantum Mechanics. As has often
been said, if you think you understand it, then you certainly don't! :)

Feynman, in a colloquial New York City in-your-face Jewish accent, taught
physics the way physics should be taught (not the way we learned it!).
--
What's interesting is how helpful the Windows & Android conversations are,
with people like you and Mike and SC Tom and Paul, et al., all helping
everyone, versus the Apple newsgroups where the apologists argue like
howling coyotes always claiming imaginary functionality that doesn't exist
(with them denying all facts about Apple products they simply don't like).

For the record, Steve (sms) proved to be a perfect Type II apologist!
o For the record, I'm watching very interestedly, the thread comments by the type II apologist to prove what they are is what I say they are
<https://groups.google.com/g/comp.mobile.ipad/c/FWq0jLyXCR8>

Not only did Steve go silent after being proved wrong by Poutnik
o But the _entire_ time, Steve was shockingly immune to basic facts!

Type II apologists wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so confident in their
ignorance since they're not malicious like Type I and Type III apologists
are.

Yet, Type II apologists like Steve clearly proved to be what I claim:
1. Steve confidently concluded the NewPipe software was no good
2. Where his proclamation was based purely on his own utter ignorance
3. Simply because Steve (like all Type II apologists) was immune to fact

Proof that Steve showed himself to be a Type II apologist is here:
o PSA: NewPipe v0.20.1 (YouTube ad-free clone on steroids) workaround posted earlier today [newpipe-FIXED.zip]

Where this is the last post, again proving how ignorant the apologists are:
