I have a new xiaomi mi 9 cellphone.

I have been trying to install a usable usenet reader but so far I have
been unsuccessful.

Either there were none of the buttons that their websites suggest,
possibly because this too recent a version of the OS or the setup
requirements demand things that I have never come across on a desktop
computer.

Can someone recommend something that they have found successful on an
Android 9 Pie cellphone?

Thanks in advance.

I was hoping for a reply from someone with recent experience using a late
Android system.

I appreciate your attempts to help but the links cited are too old to be
useful.

I have travelled those paths already.

Hi pinnerite,

This is an honest question given you seem to know something we don't.

I'm not sure why a later Android would have any better tools than an older
Android, where, if anything, the opposite is generally the case (albeit
only slightly so given most apps work on most versions of the OS).

What would be in the latest Android that would make developing (or running)
a newsreader any different than in the earlier Androids?

Do you know something we don't seem to know about the latest Android?
o If not, then the question seems to be OS independent, does it not?

I have an android smart phone that doesn't have a plan, but has many
useful purposes using its wifi and bluetooth and camera and mp3 player.

I have a 'dumb' legacy phone w/ some unidentified linux system
underneath and few features, but it has bluetooth and a phone plan,
which makes it useful for voice comm.

I wouldn't think of trying to use either of those devices to comm on
usenet or to write an essay or an email, as I prefer a full sized
keyboard and monitor and broadband connectivity for those purposes.

I also have a hammer I use to drive nails and a screwdriver I use for
screws. I suppose I could also use either of those tools as a weapon,
but I would prefer something more suitable for that purpose.

IIRC, poster '123456789' (<12...@12345.com>) has been - partly -
posting with some kind of Android newsreader on some Chromebook like
system. IIRC, that was in this group, so you might want to search for
such a post.

Other than that, I can only advise to use a real CUI newsreader such
as slrn, tin, trn, etc., in the 'Termux' Linux-like environment on
Android.

Such a CUI newsreader might not be a 'sexy' as some 'native' Android
app, but considering the pathetic state of Android newsreader, I would
take *functional* over 'sexy', any day.

Some pointers on Termux et al:

If it were 'imperative' for me to have a mobile device and usenet, my
choice would be:

- I would need to get a different cell plan for more data
- I would use a chromebook-style netbook sized device with decent
screen & kb, such as the economical small lightweight laptop I recently
acquired as a Win10 refurb
- I would employ a USB SIM dongle for cell connectivity
- I would use a linux OS and news reader instead of Win
- I would NOT use a handheld size device

Hi Mike,

Your point that a phone or tablet sucks as a text-input device is apropos.

To share added value to that observation, and while I also don't use the
phone (or even the iPad) for typing intensive activities, there "might" be
times when you might want to update a thread on Usenet.

Luckily, if the goal is read only, there is an easier method, which is
simply to use the web if (and only if) there is a convenient web-based
archive - which - for the Android & iOS newsgroups, there are...

o Google:
<http://tinyurl.com/comp-mobile-android>
<http://tinyurl.com/comp-mobile-ipad>
<http://tinyurl.com/misc-phone-mobile-iphone>

o NArchive:
<http://comp.mobile.android.narkive.com>
<http://comp.mobile.ipad.narkive.com>
<http://misc.phone.mobile.iphone.narkive.com>

I'm not sure about iOS (as I don't use it all that much lately now that I
have the $130 LG Stylo 3 Plus with a decent sized screen), but on Android,
it's trivial to save those URLs into a desktop shortcut folder named, for
example, "Usenet".

basic, but works. It didn't change with the move to Pie.

Good memory.

On my Chromebook I'm using an Android Windows emulator
(CrossOver) to run a Windows newsreader (SeaMonkey).
Unfortunately it requires a x86 processor which his phone is
unlikely to have.

To the OP: On my Galaxy Tab S4 tablet (Android 9) I use the
Groundhog newsreader which works fine with no problems. I
also use it on my Motorola phone (Android 7). But
it is very old and basic and no longer in the Play Store.
Googling may help if you find nothing better. But IMO there are
no good Android newsreaders. Good luck...

BTW Android 9 broke my NNTP Newsreader app (paid $10 for it
years ago) so one more down the drain (sigh).

Usenet is dead.
No one spends resources to develop a reasonable usenet-client for the
Android-platform. Writing texts for the usenet on a small smartphone is
not really appealing anyway.

I used that in the past, but it ceased to work on Android 8. That's why I
switched to PhoNews, which works on 8 and 9.

pinnerite

Yes I do.

My previous phone used Android 4.4 this one has 9.
A usenet application that was able to be configured on the former could
not be on the latter because the necessary items would not display on the
screen.

I am not an expert but I recognise that others may have more experience.

Anyway I have now installed NZB360 but am unable to get through the
settings.

A mobile phone is very different from a domestic PC wired or wireless.
This means any assumptions I make are more likely to be wrong than right.

So, in trying to enable SABnzbd, the first question is 'Primary
Connection Address'. What does that mean when one one's phone will be
changing locations and, on wifi be allocated a different ip address by
dhcp on every change of location.

I tried using my local router's address but that doesn't work. If I
cannot get beyond what appears to be a simple question, I might as well
throw in the towel.

Well, apparently my memory is not *that* good, because I thought it
was an Android newsreader, not a Windows one! :-)

Processor type, x86 versus ARM, can indeed be a problem.

Searching Google Play on 'windows emulator' reveals very little useful
stuff (other than CrossOver). Most results are *simulators* (i.e. fake
UIs), not (real) emulators. The only somewhat useful emulators are
DosBox emulators, i.e. a (MS-)DOS like environment, not a (MS-)Windows
like one. But I doubt that pinnerite would be interested in trying out
some DOS newsreaders, not to mention that they probably need all kinds
of magic to use an Internet connection.

So that leaves your recommendation:

The scrolling is normal in dark theme, or could be circumvented by
selecting (hold down) before scrolling. I am on android
9.

An annoyance is that it inserts its dead web site at the end of

Two solutions, both of which I have used:

1. Install Termux and build tools, compile a legacy Unix shell
newsreader from source, then run that from termux. I used trn4.

2. Install SSH client of choice, I use termux's ssh, then ssh to a Linux
jumphost and run a legacy Unix shell newsreader there. I do this now[*].

The use of a single host ssh'ed into from my home computer or my
cellphone removes all article read state synchonization issues by having
only a single location for that.

ssh doesn't use a ton of network.

I have the paid version. It has problems with my Android 5
tablet and is quite unusable with my Android 9 tablet. But
strangely it still works just fine on my 2019 Amazon Fire OS

Nope. Still get 'not optimized warning' (Android 9 tablet).
Carriage returns are missing from the reply screen turning
it into one jumbled paragraph mess. And some scrolling is
still broken. Ah well, Groundhog still works...

FWIW I also have PhoNews and it works but boy do you
have to do a lot of scrolling and page turning just for
normal use. As I've said many times all Android newsreaders
suck. Please prove me wrong (hoping that you do)...

The home page listed for the app at Google's Play Store points to
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.piaohong.newsgroup,
but that gives "The website you visited does not exist! Please check
that the URL you entered is incorrect" (in Chinese). The link you give
is to Amazon AWS, a CDN (Content Network Delivery) service; see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Web_Services.

Your link has the site mention:
4. Fixed the other 23 bugs.
5. Added 56 bugs.

Sometimes translation from Chinese to English leaves out the connotative
meaning of a phrase. His site meant to say he *added* 56 bugs?

Old version: 1.65, released 09-Nov-2014
New version: 2.00, released 20-Nov-2019

That's 5 years between updates. Also:

Old version: Requires Android 3.0, and up.
New version: Requires Android 8.0, and up.

Such a huge jump in OS requirements means a major code change, yet the
"What's New" for the new version describes the updates are minor (no bug
database to view). Piahong just cut off 45% of Android users.

I'm not going to pay $708 to look at a 'premium' graph

Google's stats don't include 10 yet, but it'll be tiny so far, only
supporting 8+ does seem rather silly.

I paid NOTHING just to look at the graph in the provided URL link. When
I revisited the web page, now it overlays an ad promo and disable the
chart. Guess they're caching IP addresses for awhile to see who
revisits their site.

I just did a simple online Google search on "android version
marketshare". I just did the search again, and found yet another chart
at the Statista site. However, this time instead of clicking on the
search result that points to the site, I clicked the down-arrow to show
the cached copy, and that one showed the chart.

Another search hit was:

https://www.appbrain.com/stats/top-android-sdk-versions

where I just clicked on the search hit and it displayed okay. It might
also get blocked later, and I'd have to look at the cached copy. There
are other stats available online showing marketshares for various
things, and I don't pay for any of them.

Didn't know about that one. That one came up later in the search
results despite Google was the search engine.

It put on the overlay immediately for me, actually it was simple enough
to hide it with uBO's element zapper.

It's the standard one that google have released for years, actually this
site presents the historic info from google's pie chart in a useful way

Here my phone's input methods provide carriage return. Aren't English
input methods the same?

Under what kind of occasion?

I updated through Google play; That CDN site provides direct apk file
downloading, which is normal for chinese phones because they usually
strip off Google service and replace with their own.

Yes. Let me translate the change log:
1. Fixed dragging (or pulling) in day theme.
2. Fixed scrolling and paging.
3. Support higher Android version.
4. Fixed other 23 bugs.
5. Added 56 bugs.

I guess it's not a minor bug fix but some rewrite. How could anyone
intentionally *Add" bugs?

The is the carriage mess 123456789 write about. Your quoted post
is untouched by any editing.

It may mean added=registered newly found bugs.

See Libor Striz's post for an example. I get the exact same
thing.

What is really weird (to me anyway) is that the app screws
up on all my Android 5 thru 9 devices but yet works fine on
all my Amazon Fire OS tablets (which I believe are based on
Android 5 thru 7). I'm still running the old version 1.65 on
them and for obvious reasons I don't plant to update. (The
Amazon store doesn't carry the app but I originally
sideloaded it from my backup apk archive.)

> Under what kind of occasion?

On some screens if the text goes below the bottom of the
screen it won't scroll down. Again only on the Android
devices and not the Fire devices...

Yes I get that bug too. Unbearable.
