I'm working on a project that will likely involve melding nntp and Tor.
Ideally, I'd like to include an Android app that can read (text)
newsgroups, and be proxied through the Orbot app. Do you know of any such
beast? If you know of more than one, which one(s) do you recommend, and
why?

Thank you for your time,

I don't know much about this, so, take my suggestion with a grain of salt.

Here is how "I" meld nntp and tor:
1. I start Orbot (that sets up a Tor circuit)
2. In Orbot, I press "VPN" (that will bring up "Orbot Apps VPN Mode").
3. In the Orbot Apps VPN Mode form, I press "Activate"
(and then I click the "I trust this application" and "OK" buttons)

At that point, *all* my ports, including 119 for NNTP protocol, should be
encrypted.

Others will know more about this than I do, but, to me, that seems like a
simple way to meld nntp and tor.

Of course, the drawback might be that *all* your ports, e.g., smtp, pop3,
etc., are on Tor at the same time (which may not be what you want).

As another suggestion for *encryption* (but not necessarily Tor), most news
servers have a port 563/SSL connection...
