Hello all,

I searched a lot, but I haven't found another android client
beyond this one. Does anyone know if there are other NNTP clients
besides this one. (the banner is at the bottom of the

I thing many people including myself think
it is a one eye king among the blind ones.

It would be hard to find better, at least among free Android clients.

I think we just had some discussion here about this
newsreader. I have both the old (1.65) and new (2.02)
versions and have both the free and paid (no ads) apps. All
have a posting bug that removes carriage returns when used
with newer versions of Android and makes it a PITA to post
with (for me YMMV depending on your Android fork).

However it still works fine on my older version Android
tablets and current Amazon Fire OS tablets (which are based
on an older Android fork.)

I mainly use Groundhog on my newer tablets. Recently I
bought PhoNews (there is a free version with ads) which
seems to work fine but takes a lot of scrolling and page
switching so I'm back to Groundhog.

If you have a Chromebook that runs Android check into the
Crossover app which is a Windows emulator. That way you can
have the best of both worlds. I'm currently using the
Windows app SeaMonkey to post with and IMO it's better than
any Android newsreader hands down. YMMV...

I used to it in past as well, but on my recent devices it started
crashing AFAIK.
On my Android 9 device it is not even offered by the Google play
search.

So far so good on my Android 9 devices.
I'm sitting in a Target store snack bar waiting
for the wife to shop so will post this
using my Android 9 phone and Groundhog.

I've been using my archived copy of Groundhog
but I believe it's still available at several online sites.

Groundhog was removed from Google Play.

Groundhog 1.20.3 (zoldar build) is available in some apk online libraries,
for example:
https://www.apkmonk.com/app/com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader/
https://www.appbrain.com/app/groundhog-usenet-reader/com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader

You can find also updated and bugfixed Groundhog fork here:
http://83.220.108.211/bins/groundhog/
However, I haven't tested it…

Hmmm. I'm curious as to why?

Is there any more data surrounding this groundhog development?
o Did the Groundhog Usenet client simply change names?
o Did Groundhog get removed by Google or by the author?

Anyone know why the Groundhog nntp news agent is no longer on Google Play?

1. I've seen miscreant apps removed from Google Play.
2. And I've seen apps superceded by newer (better) apps at times.
3. I've seen free apps go payware...

Anyone have an idea as to why Groundhog was removed from Google Play?

I've been using Groundhog 1.20.3 for many years. It has worked on
almost everything including my Android 9 devices and Fire OS tablets
(I'm posting on an HD8). It doesn't work with the old Samsung
tablets that have the physical buttons as the Groundhog menu ends up
off screen and is unusable. It also only works with one server.
Pretty minor complaints for such a durable piece of software IMO. I'm
told my phone will soon be upgraded to Android 10. Keeping my fingers
crossed for good old Groundhog...

I test them both, but they don't work with my Hamster server. Maybe
Hamster's bug, for it works with "outside" servers. I see it uses "head"
and "body" command to retrieve articles, not "xover" and "article"
command like Thunderbird. Maybe that's the cause.

Just for the heck of it I tried Groundhog on my W10 laptop using the
BlueStacks Windows emulator. The emulator has no back-home-recent
buttons on the bottom and the Groundhog menu button is missing
(making it unusable ) just like the Samsung tablet with the physical
buttons. Interesting but no big deal since why use Groundhog on W10
when there there are better newsreaders available. I'm also noticing
extra returns on the posted quoted text. Am posting with an Android 9
device today so let's see how it looks. And transmit...

Yep the extra returns were there. Lemme try PhoNews next. It's a pain to use
as a reader but it may be one of the few Android newsreaders left with no
(noticible?) bugs. Here's hoping...

PhoNews said it transmitted but it apparently didn't. So it's back to
Groundhog, warts and all. I now return this newsgroup to normal service...

Update: Groundhog 1.20.3 could be set with Hamster, as long as the "body
<mid>" command is satisfied; Groundhog 2, however, do not work at all
for my Vivo Android 9 phone, whether my server or other servers (group
article list is always empty).
