Is there a way to possibly start over?

We made a mistake during importing. The catalog was uploaded on main product level while the user events had product IDs on the SKU (variant) level. Based on the documentation that we've read so far, it seems that the only way to go about is to purge events and remove the entire catalog.

We've removed the entire catalog using this and the only thing we have left is purging, which we apparently successfully did but we are not sure whether the user event purging is successful because it only returns the purge operation ID when checking the operation status (which is described in this tutorial).
