I am designing a college course on software engineering. Can you tell me some of your favorite most influential timeless articles, book chapters, papers, on the broad topic of "Software Engineering"? I am collecting this list far and wide and would be glad to share what I come up with with you all! Thanks,

Two 'must reads' that influenced my thinking greatly are 'No Silver Bullet': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Silver_Bullet  and 'Out of the Tar Pit': http://shaffner.us/cs/papers/tarpit.pdf. The arguments in 'Out of the Tar Pit' have pushed me towards functional programming.

Those essays appear in Brooks' book, the Mythical Man-Month.  MMM influenced greatly virtually everybody's views, and those who were unmoved weren't thinking.  While an ancient tome, it still has enormous meaning today.

Thanks for the links. I am collecting them. It’s interesting that I can’t find a more modern version of  a collection of great Software Engineering papers and writing. Kind of a top hits of SE in the 21st century. Of course mythical man month is a classic and contains eternal truths. But there are more recent papers, articles and chapters which are very important too which are not collected as far as I can find. Maybe I should edit one :)

Any other leads? Thank you all!

Pito
