Hi. Just wondering if people had any further thoughts or experiences on setting up school Facebook pages since this initial post some years ago? Are they prone to abuse from pupils and do parents/past pupils use/follow the page as anticipated?
Thanks....

There are are two schools of thought;
1) set one up before your student do.
2) if you setup an account and don't have access to it because facebook is
blocked by the school when you are in school then will the page get
neglected.
As *Kent Brockman would say, that's my 2cents . *

Hi Folks
I look after the FB page for Cavan Institute. (www.facebook.com/cavaninstitute.ie<http://www.facebook.com/cavaninstitute.ie>)
Mostly it is no problem at all. Only myself as administrator can post on the site, this avoids nasty posts being posted.
We rarely get negative comments. When we do, I take a screenshot of the comment and delete it and if I can I message that person advising them that if they chose to make such comments could they do it elsewhere please (or something very polite to that effect!). As much as I can, I will acknowledge the comment - regardless. You can block someone from your page if they are persistent in posting inappropriate material.
It is important to keep an eye on the page and have your notifications set up appropriately.
It is essentially free web space and can be a great way to connect with people.
I hope this helps.
Kind regards

Hi,
In my school, we were organising a fashion show for school funds. We
decided to set up a facebook account just to advertise the event and
announce sponsors, competitions etc. In our experience only one child tried
to be friends with us (480 pupil school) Parents were very supportive,
liking and sharing different competitions and sharing messages that we
wanted spread through the community. Since the page was so useful to us,
the fashion show organisers in our school have decided to keep the page
open and advertise other school events on it.
I realise that every school community is different, but in our experience,
a facebook page was fantastic!

Come July, my school's Facebook page will be 2 years in operation. The
school (Loreto Navan) is all-girls with 777 students. I launched it during
the summer time when things were quiet and I did not actively promote it in
September other than having a link on our school website. I preferred that
it grow as a slow burner rather than heavily promoting and risking wise
guys or gals having a go at it. The page currently has 620+ Likes and as
far as the demographics are concerned I have attached a graph.
I believe it is important for my school to have an official Facebook page
as a means of managing its own online presence ~ as opposed to allowing
current or past pupils to unoffically do so. There will always be prank
pages set-up by others, but at least the school can point to and
disseminate its respective messages via it's administered sites.
I also believe having such pages allows my school to serve as a role model
to its students and parents as to how social networking can be used in
positive ways. It is very heartening when the school posts an individual
student's accomplishment on FB and then noting the many students who join
in the congratulations by "liking" the post. Past pupils and parents engage
in that manner as well.
So far, so good. It has been a great way for our current students, past
pupils and parents to further stay informed what is going on in the school
community. More than a few teachers have also felt comfortable enough with
the page to Like it as well.
Regards,
Tom

Does anyone know of an easy to use software that would allow me to create a basic 3D model of our new school building. I am working with the children in the ASD unit and many of them are anxious about moving to the new school. We have started making visits to the building site to see the school building going up but I would love an easy way to create a 3D model where we could take a virtual tour from time to time to familiarise them with the main features of the building.

As an alternative suggestion - would they be able to make a tangible model
using card or lego or some other material?
The architect might even have one....

Sketch up is great- it used to be Google owned, but Trimble brought it recently. Here's the link for the download: http://www.sketchup.com/
Hope this helps!

Sketchup - free and cross platform. Formerly owned by Google but now owned
by Trimble.
Download from here - http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/download/index.html -
use the free version - link on bottom right. Schools can get free licences
for the pro version but the free version should do everything you want.

Hi Cormac,
I work with three 13 yr old boys in our ASD unit. We've building work going on the school so to familiarize ourselves with the changes the architect gave us a model and we recreated that using building blocks and Lego, we then had a treasure hunt around our 'new build' which involved the boys reading questions and finding the right answers through QR codes. Great fun! Happy boys!
Paula.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We're attempting a Lego model but fast running out of Lego. Minecraft was another option but just had a look a sketch up and it looks like a good possibility. Contacting the architect is a great idea. Hopefully they will be able to help out too. Really looking forward to the move. :)

Hi!
Thanks to all of you who took the time to reply- i have followed and will continue follow all of your advice re: the after school club. All your ideas were so helpful. The bom approved the project and have a bit of money to spare- thanks for the ubuntu idea - @conpower, have just been replying to one of ur tweets not realising that it was you had planted the idea in my head in the first place (replacing old windows pc with ubuntu OS) would ve never tried it otherwise.
Am really looking forward to starting- am only regretting the fact that i am in a boys school- no hope of any coder divas coming my way any time soon but we ll see...
All the best
Sinead

If it's after school why not see if a teacher and students from the girls school would like to come down? Could be a good opportunity to collaborate most schools have a techie or two!
