Hi all

Just a quick survey, has anyone created a facebook account for their school? This was a suggestion from a parent at our HSA meeting tonight. They had lots of positive reasons why it should be a good idea- I am in the middle camp for the mo on it.

 Has anybody had any experience of creating one under a school name to promote upcoming events, good news etc? Pro's and con's please?

Hi Sinéad,

I'm in the process of looking at the Facebook option as well for my
school. One of my former schools in the States has done a pretty good
job of integrating Facebook / Twitter into their online presence. See

Another former school of mine uses Facebook as a tool for networking
and staying contact with alumni,

It's on my list to contact both with a similar query to your's.

I am far from a Facebook expert, but depending on privacy settings, I
imagine prospective parents could use a school's Facebook account to
get a sense of what the student population is like by looking at
various student Facebook accounts.

I'll keep you posted on the feedback I get from my contacts.

Our school has a Facebook account which is used by about 15% of parents. I pop up some announcements, etc.  I'm not entirely sure of its real purpose as yet.  I can see it being reasonably useful but I can also see it becoming a place for parents to nose about in each other's personal lives.

The following IWBs are magnetic and touch based - TouchIT and Cleverboard Touch.  You can stick dongles such as the eBeam to existing magnetic boards too.  Make sure your whiteboard has a matte finish.  Other add-on boards are: Mimio, Onfinity, Intech Portable.  You could also get the Epson Brightlite projector which has built-in interactivity.

There are are two schools of thought;

1) set one up before your student do.

2) if you setup an account and don't have access to it because facebook is blocked by the school when you are in school then will the page get neglected.

Hi Folks

 

I look after the FB page for Cavan Institute.  (www.facebook.com/cavaninstitute.ie)

 

Mostly it is no problem at all.  Only myself as administrator can post on the site, this avoids nasty posts being posted. 

 

We rarely get negative comments.  When we do, I take a screenshot of the comment and delete it and if I can I message that person advising them that if they chose to make such comments could they do it elsewhere please (or something very polite to that effect!).  As much as I can, I will acknowledge the comment - regardless.  You can block someone from your page if they are persistent in posting inappropriate material.

 

It is important to keep an eye on the page and have your notifications set up appropriately.

 

It is essentially free web space and can be a great way to connect with people.

Hi,

In my school, we were organising a fashion show for school funds. We decided to set up a facebook account just to advertise the event and announce sponsors, competitions etc. In our experience only one child tried to be friends with us (480 pupil school) Parents were very supportive, liking and sharing different competitions and sharing messages that we wanted spread through the community. Since the page was so useful to us, the fashion show organisers in our school have decided to keep the page open and advertise other school events on it. 

I realise that every school community is different, but in our experience, a facebook page was fantastic!

Come July, my school's Facebook page will be 2 years in operation. The school (Loreto Navan) is all-girls with 777 students. I launched it during the summer time when things were quiet and I did not actively promote it in September other than having a link on our school website. I preferred that it grow as a slow burner rather than heavily promoting and risking wise guys or gals having a go at it. The page currently has 620+ Likes and as far as the demographics are concerned I have attached a graph.

I believe it is important for my school to have an official Facebook page as a means of managing its own online presence ~ as opposed to allowing current or past pupils to unoffically do so. There will always be prank pages set-up by others, but at least the school can point to and disseminate its respective messages via it's administered sites.

I also believe having such pages allows my school to serve as a role model to its students and parents as to how social networking can be used in positive ways. It is very heartening when the school posts an individual student's accomplishment on FB and then noting the many students who join in the congratulations by "liking" the post. Past pupils and parents engage in that manner as well.

So far, so good. It has been a great way for our current students, past pupils and parents to further stay informed what is going on in the school community. More than a few teachers have also felt comfortable enough with the page to Like it as well.

We have facebook blocked, however My students explained that if you replace http by https in the web address, you will get through anyway.
