Hi All,
Just in case I get rapped over the knuckles ... there’s no sales pitch here!
SCRATCH Course in Navan (read about it below):

Firstly a gentle rant!
I was admiring that excellent and very useful poster (A-Z of ICT) from Katie Gabbett and I was thinking
how wonderful it is to see Flash mentioned under the letter F. (Flash: Adobe’s platform for developing and displaying animation and video in web browsers).

Flash is not getting much positive publicity these days and it’s not too difficult to see why, but (thinking of education)
I have reason not to agree with the trend or direction.
I spent a very interesting evening recently in Tallaght IT with Stephen Howell, Computer Science Lecturer in the Institute and
I learned some interesting facts about the direction computer programming courses are taking at 3rd level.
If you’re reading this Stephen thanks for your time and hospitality!
You’re doing great work and I hope to see you in Navan in the New Year.

I recently bought a Blackberry PlayBook to test my Flash apps when I’m on the move.
It’s great to see them work perfectly on a tablet but beyond testing I think tablets are toys!
Apple didn’t give me the option to test my apps on an iPad so I didn’t purchase one (enough said)!

Despite having uploaded over 160 free interactive resources in Gaeilge for IWBs (and there are many more under development),
maybe that’s why I feel that I’m working in isolation as a Flash designer / developer.
I should have mentioned, there’s one Maths resource uploaded to www.weandus.ie/maths.html   (It’s for free - Nothing for Sale on my sites!).
The next  ‘Is Féidir Liom’ Irish verbs app will be uploaded next Monday at www.isfeidirliom.ie (totally free!)

Flash is an excellent interface to develop school apps and I’m puzzled as to why there appears to be no support or encouragement.
I know Flash is not the only UI but I think it’s more object oriented than the rest (looking at it from the point-of-view of resources for school IWBs).
I remain very interested in hearing from other teachers who’d be interested in developing Flash resources for schools.
I’m particularly keen to hear from retired teachers who might have time to spare but also from practicing teachers would have very useful insights
and a greater sense of what is required ‘at the chalkface’. (Can we still use that expression?)

SCRATCH . . . . .
Navan Education Centre is planning to run a SCRATCH Course in the New Year.
We have been in touch with the NCTE and look forward to its support for SCRATCH in the North East.
It will take place over 5 Saturdays with a break for two weeks then another 5 Saturdays.
Dates undecided as yet. Possibly 5 before Easter and 5 after.
To gauge interest, any one who thinks they’s like to attend this course please contact Navan Education Centre or contact me from above web sites ar through the e-mail given below.
Kind regards all

    Keith,

Webtext.com I'd recommend as one of Serco's recommended suppliers, they
were very helpful in any setup challenges (which were few) and are an Irish
company and offer a competitive rate for schools.

    Kind regards,
    Steve.

Check https://www.iflow.net/ - 4.9c ex VAT per message. Not sure how this
compares to others? No direct integration with Facility but it's easy
enough to export the mobile numbers from Facility and import into iFlow.
You can set up groups etc in iFlow.

Would love to develop Apps in Flash.
Think Apple have missed this and that HTML5 is being touted by Apple as the replacement for Flash eventhough Flash is much better for interactivity because Steve Jobs couldn’t get Adobe to play ball with the App Store.

Count me in,

Peter

I agree that Flash is an excellent tool for easy app/game development
- and great for teaching kids programming!

There is a big move towards cross platform / cross device support for
it resources. Unfortunately Flash doesn't fit well into this picture
on account of its battery/processor hogging!

If your kids all have access to a laptop/desktop flash makes sense.
While flash works on android phones it is patchy at best - kills the
battery and unusable on slower processors. While I see opportunities
for doing fantastic work with scratch I redirect my time into
developing (albeit less interactive) cross platform resources.

Can we still say ‘at the chalkface’.    Only if the intended meaning is  ' @ the ch@lkFaceBook' !     ;-)
