You will have to take care of additional three things in Manual Mode:
i. Shutter Speed
ii. Aperture
iii. ISO

So try to note down these values from the shot you took in Auto mode and then switch to manual and set the above values accordingly and you will get the same exposure.

He copied the same settings from his auto shot over to manual (shutter, ISO, etc).  Second photo just looks off on the flash synch.
