Dear list

Has anybody explained the unusual usage मा भैष्ट विद्वन् in the Vivekacūḍāmaṇi (verse 43 or 45, depending on the edition)?

The expected form is मा भैषीः विद्वन् (singular) or मा भैष्ट विद्वांसः (plural). मा भैष्ट is मध्यम पुरुष बहुवचन while विद्वन् is एकवचन. But मा भैषीः विद्वन् or मा भैष्ट विद्वांसः would violate the metre.

The commentary by Swami Chandrashekhara Bharati (attached, thanks to V Subrahmanian for the link again) does not say anything on the unusual usage. In fact the commentary says भवान् मा भैष्ट [??]. Appears to be a typographic or editorial error as it should be be भवान् मा भैषीत् (भवान् takes the प्रथमपुरुष एकवचन form).

Thanks, Nityananda

Is it honorific plural?

I think there are some usages where bhavaan goes with second person plural, plural being used as honorific form.

There is an old thread on bhavaan:

Namaste Shri. Nityanand Mahoday,

>>मा भैषीः विद्वन्
 विद्वन् - Sir are you treating it as सं . प्र ?
If it is  प्रथमा then it should be विद्वान् .
Am I right sir?

Similar case is here:

।  श्रीमद्भागवतम् 10.34.28.

प्रणमामि महोदय।

After a lot of search, I came up with another example which may relate to this.

https://sanskritdocuments.org/doc_giitaa/agastyagItA.html?lang=sa
What is your view about the 18th shloka where Maya is addressing Pashupal King, as "Ma Bhaishta"?

Another example is from the Bhagwat Puran where Krishna is addressing an ambassador as "Mai Bhaishta".
The shlok is as follows:
राजदूतमुवाचेदं भगवान् प्रीणयन् गिरा ।
मा भैष्ट दूत भद्रं वो घातयिष्यामि मागधम् ॥ १९ ॥ (SB 10.71)
In the Hindi translation, the Ma Bhaisht is actually referred to the Kings the ambassador has to give a message. "दूत! तुम राजाओं से जाकर कह देना 'डरो मत'।"

The other example is from Skand Puran, Vaishnav Khand, Vaishakh Mahatmya. But it has a path-bheda.

These are the two places I could find "Ma Bhaisht" as examples with singular. Maybe this maybe of some help to you.

Regards.
Rishi.
