"Naveen Badrinarayan | Dheya.com" <naveen.ba...@dheya.com>: Mar 30 08:15AM -0700
In the BhagwadGita Chapter 18, each personality or temperament is made up
of the three gunas viz. Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. The 4 types of classified
people as per their behavior and qualities are the Brahmana, Kshatriya ,
Vaishya and Shudra. The verse 45 says that each person must perform their
duties as per their own nature, meaning the shudra should perform service
with full dedication and devotion which will lead the shudra to fulfilled
life and will eventually extinguish the "vasanas" due to which the shudra
is having this temperament at all of more of Tamas, little of rajas and
very little of sattva. The same is the case with a Brahmana, Kshatriya and
Vaishya all are acting according to their "vasanas" induced temeraments and
as long as they adhere to their own nature and act accordingly, they reach
fulfillment. Is it that as a Shudra gets fulfilled, they transcend to
become more like a Vaishya --> Kshatriya--> Brahmana or is it that
irrespective of what varna you are , you can directly reach the highest
state of fulfillment as you extinguish your own vasanas.
There is a bit of a dilemna here, which needs clarification.

See this:
http://corpus.quran.com/ontology.jsp.
Go through all utilities provided/possible there.
The question now is:
Has anybody attempted this kind of presentation to any Hindu text(s) : all
these -
the ontology of concepts, the text in print, simultaneous reading aloud
(voice record) of the original,
transliteration in various scripts, translations into various languages,
grammar and dictionary alongside, commentaries and exegesis, modern
expositions
(books and articles on related themes), good and bad, with due annotations,
diagrammatic representations, (scanned/photographed)manuscript resources,
etc. etc. etc.
- all given in a plain fashion, &/or as scalable hypertexts/hyperlinks ?
(The intention is not to overwhelm the reader,
but to summon whatever he needs/likes/wants
- all at his beck & call : all at a mere press of the button).
Of course, Islam and Christianity or religions of single books.
Hence their task is relatively easy. But Hinduism has
a rich repertoire of literature spanning vast aeons.
And *every text of Hinduism* needs this appurtenance in all detail.
The patterns of tools/utilities/services made available in this site
can help the study of Hinduism too. All the same,
newer/different techniques may be desirable too.
Can Indic Academy take this up for even one small scriptural text?
Of course, IIT-K, Samskrita Bharati, UoH, and a few other institutions
(even in the West)
have made their excellent attempts with varying agenda and varying
levels/degrees of success
(and they need to be catalogued too, and their progress to be regularly
reported too
- in some abiding sites).
Ultimately, there should be nothing wanting for an earnest reader that
seeks to know.
By the way, are there better sites than the one cited at the outset for any
(other) text?

This is needed for other texts too.

Thanks Prof.Paturiji,It was not my intention to convey that Prof.Raghavan attributed the verses to Valmiki. I just mentioned that it is not there in Valmiki, although it could fit in well in Ramayana story. Patanjali must have quoted it from some source, I felt. The fact that Prof.Raghavan does not say anything about the source made me feel that the source was unidentified when he wrote the essay.Regarding Shankaraji's support to BVP would this convey reasonably well, which is based on Prof.Kannan's expression?

Sri G S S Murthy-ji,
Prof. Raghavan is not at all saying that the story is in Ramayana.
He is saying that the story is a story involves Ramayana motifs (the expression वानरसैन्येस्मिन् is cliching) so has influence of Ramayana on it. Patanjali quoting such a story shows that Ramayana was already so popular and influential by Patanjali's time itself.
The story itself is a proverbial story used as a proverb to talk about the behaviour of a person which turns out to be right /good / appropriate accidentally /coincidentally without being intended by that person to be so.
