Inclined towards Translation Tools

Hello,

This is Vishal Gupta, 2nd year, majoring in Information Technology at the Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology(MAIT), New Delhi.I am interested in contributing towards your organisation specifically towards Translation Tools.

First things first,I see that you don't have tagging options enabled for posts which is clearly making things difficult for both mentors and students as filtering makes it a breeze to search for various projects.This may be because you have not enabled tags and can be enabled easily.

I have been working in Python for the last 20 months and have developed many projects which communicate with other servers, parse custom HTML,XML and JSON and pours output into CSV files and databases.

According to my research, although Google Translate Api is a paid Api but I have successfully managed to leverage it to work using python and it works flawlessly.Other services like Bing,Yandex,MyMemory,Frengly can be leveraged similarly or through an Api.

I have recently started working with PyQt4 to create GUI's for projects that were earlier CLI.It uses native display for Windows and Mac and impressive displays for Linux users.PySide is very similar to PyQt and has a flexible license and PyQt 4.5 onwards is completely compatible with PySide and there are tools which make this process easy.

Some questions:

1. Do we have to use a certain Python version and GUI libraries or we have complete freedom to choose them as long as they are cross-platform and community-driven?

Also,I have some fantastic ideas for a very powerful and easy to use Translation Tool which I would like to communicate directly with a mentor if possible.

Just say the word :-) Tags have now been enabled.

Python version we use is 2.7. Do you want to use a higher version?

Regarding GUI libs, we are ok with any Python libs as long as they work on Windows and Linux.

Yes, YQL is another powerful method to query data from various sources.

I have many ideas that I would like to implement and fear that they would be plagiarised if I discuss them here, not that I care (it's open source isn't it!!!) but still.

 You can safely assume that the target users would have good internet access. The tool is basically going to be used by open source community for localising their projects.

In lieu of above reply do we need to add localized number and date formatting, etc. to the translation tool?

And do we need to create a standalone Tool or can we have a back-end online which keeps things in sync(though not necessary)?

eg. Since certain free Api's "limit" amount of words that can be translated, we can have multiple tokens and cycle between them when the user uses the tool by pinging the backend.

We could also however keep multiple tokens in the Tool itself and then cycle among them randomly.And so, can we use multiple tokens or do we need to devise indirect methods to use services like Bing Translate, etc ?

If you mean 'do you need to translate numerals and date', yes the tool should take care of these.

 

And do we need to create a standalone Tool or can we have a back-end online which keeps things in sync(though not necessary)?

This would be a standalone tool to start with. We do not want any server side implementation for developing the tool as of now.

Yes, this is a good idea. Your tool should however detect when the switching of tokens is necessary. Also would be a good idea to have an option for the user to enter custom token - if he may have a paid one already.

Yes,custom token for all the Api's with backup of a free one is definitely on the list alongwith switching of tokens.
