Hello Boxart Denizens,
Wishing all that celebrate, a very warm and festive Thanksgiving.
For the final Monday in November, 2025, we present the Aurora art that was featured on their 1956, first release of the British Royal Aircraft Factory SE-5 WWI fighter, 1/48 scale kit.
The SE-5 kit was soon updated to the SE-5A with the addition of a 4-bladed prop.
The Scout Experimental 5 (SE-5) was one of Britain's premier fighters during the Great War.
It flew for the first time in 1916 and over 5,200 of then were built.
It was armed with two machine guns.
A Vickers .303 cal MG was mounted on the forward fuselage and fired through the prop arc, a Lewis 303 machine gun was mounter on the upper wing and fired over the prop arc.
They served with several allied air forces during that period.
The original design, SE-5, had a 150 HP motor and two bladed prop.
Only 79 of them were built before the improved 200 HP, 4 bladed prop, SE-5A was developed.
I selected and formatted a dozen images of the SE-5 for your edification.
All the images are 1280 pixels.

Jean,
Those Aurora WW-1 1/48 scale kits were a huge favorite.
There once was a store called TG&Y (Toys, Goods & Yarn)
here in Sunny California when I was a 'wee lad'. I bought the
SE-5, the Sopwith Camel and a few others in this Aurora line.
After built they hung from my bedroom ceiling thru high school.
Happy Thanksgiving! to you and all the Group here.

I am reading Tom Graham's history of Aurora... it was "ahead of Monogram" and as time passed, many of the same challenges and decisions affected Monogram.. The mold sale
to MMI was a mess.. poor records kept.. several years ago, a fellow in NY at Atlantis
gave me a list of molds that were hidden and not shipped.. perhaps 70+.. they still
sit in a warehouse on Long Island..

This is a SUPERB site!!   The Jack Leynwood Ferrari 250 GTO box art for Aurora
was recently on Ebay.. $5K!!   YIKES!!'

Jean, thanks for doing this!!

Hi Bob, I would love to know more about the molds that are still in a warehouse, if you have additional information.

Robert Johnson,
That blows my mind, that around 70 old Aurora molds sit in a
warehouse on Long Island. Has Atlantis Models tried to buy them?
I recall, as most here likely do, about the Aurora molds shipped on a
train and then lost or ruined when the train derailed or crashed/burned.
So many Aurora kits I loved as a preteen, and in high school. Good Times!
Happy Turkey Day (soon),

Hopefully Bob will share the info provided by the gentleman from Atlantis.

There have been so many rumors of lost Aurora molds over the years, in addition to the train wreck. I’m not sure any of them, other than the wreck, have ever panned out.

I've been hearing stories of lost, wrecked, sunk molds for almost 50 years...I'm at the point where I'll believe it when you can show me proof!

I had a couple of these - built - about 65 years ago; a Sopwith Camel being likely, but no longer sure at this distance what either were. They were pretty sturdy, though.

Jaime..  I started at MMI in early 1974..  one aspect of that purchase that I do not believe is well understood to this day is that Tom Gannon negotiated that purchase with Mattel approval primarily to purchase the Aurora molds to remove them from production and block a "third party" firm (unidentified) from buying the mold inventory and gaining retail shelf space through significantly lower pricing..

That is my understanding as well.
