Dear Bonsai Group,

I would like to record flies in the dark illuminated by IR (the cam has an IR long-pass filter), and then use a LED red light spot light (with a certain frequency and duration) to activate specific neurons in flies. For this, I bought a USB-6001 NI-DAQ multifunction I/O device with which I would like to control the red light LED driver.

So far, I was able to control – by the use of the NI DAQ software – the LED driver in two ways: by Digital I/O (DIO), or by Analog output (AO). For DIO, there are three ports (0, 1 and 2, respectively) each with a specific number of lines (1, 4 and 8, respectively). Similarly, for AO, there are two options: AO0 and AO1.

My questions are

a) Is there a stable Bonsai package available do download, and
b) how to use this package to program frequency & duration preferably by DIO (e.g. to control ports/lines)?

I appreciate any feedback!

Lukas

Hi Lukas,

a) You can find the Bonsai package and installation instructions as an answer to this question:

If it doesn't work right away, you may need to install extra DAQmx components (see here):

b) How exactly do you want to program frequency & duration? Is it enough to program the switches in the CPU, or do you want to upload a stimulus train to the board? If it is the latter, you can upload stimulus waveforms for the analog output. If the former, you can see the link to the first question, I believe it is describing something very similar.

Hope this helps!
