Hi,

I would like to use Dalsa Genie Nano camera, but I cannot figure out how to have it recognized by Bonsai.  In this forum somebody previously mentioned that Dalsa provides a DirectShow driver, but I cannot find it, and Dalsa tech told me that they don't have one. I am wondering if anybody has figured out how to set up this camera in Bonsai.

Thanks,
hkato

Hi hkato and welcome to the forums.

Unfortunately I have never used personally a Dalsa Genie camera. It is true that DirectShow drivers are being discontinued, and in the long-run I expect less and less cameras to support them.
It looks like the way to support this camera is to integrate the Sapera LT SDK provided by Dalsa with Bonsai.

Let me try this: I will try to contact Dalsa support and ask if they would be willing to provide me with the SDK so I can develop a Bonsai plugin. Usually they only allow you to download the SDK if you have a Dalsa camera (which I don't), but I will ask them if they would mind me developing a Bonsai interface for their cameras that I could distribute to users.

If they agree, then I can probably develop an interface very fast, given that they already have a C# interface. They mention in the website that there is a supported ImageJ plugin, so there is actually a precedent for this kind of integration.

I will let you know about their reply.

Hello Gonçalo,

Thank you for your kind response!  Yes, that would be really helpful.  I hope Dalsa will be fine about providing the SDK.  I would appreciate it if you could update me about it.

Thanks again,
hkato

Hi hkato,

I've been working on a Bonsai package for interfacing with Genie Nano cameras and it should be available in the Bonsai Package Manager for you to use. The package is called Bonsai.TeledyneDALSA and it contains a SaperaCapture node. It should work with all Genie Nano cameras, though I don't know for sure because I've only been testing it on the Genie Nano M1280  in our lab. I also don't know if it will work for all different frame grabbers. Anyways, give it a shot and let me know how it goes.

Cheers,
Nick

I forgot to mention that in order for the SaperaCapture Node to work, Bonsai needs to be run with the --noboot flag.

Hi Nicholas,

This is great! Do you have the code for this hosted somewhere?
I was developing my own Bonsai.Sapera package, but maybe the two efforts could be integrated to ensure all features are accessible.

Thanks, this will be very helpful.

Hi Nicholas, Hi Gonçalo,

Thank you for the information!  Gonçalo, I would really appreciate it if you could take a look at it and integrate it with your program.

All the best,

Thanks Nick, this looks really great :-)

I may submit some pull requests at some point to improve the NuGet package specification and maybe generalizing the server discovery, etc, but otherwise it seems to have most of what you might want to get out of it.

Looking forward to try it.
Cheers!
