Tata Group launched a cheapest water purifier- "TATA Swach"

India's Tata Group launched a water purifier priced for the masses Monday that the company hopes will help save the lives of millions of people who die each year of waterborne diseases. The purifier is the latest in a string of Tata initiatives – like the ultra-cheap Nano car and affordable Tata apartments – that target a lower income rural market many companies have ignored. “The whole group has been fired with the view of how can we create products which were earlier not within reach of the vast number of people through innovation and technology, not just stripping down the value of the product,” Tata Sons chairman Ratan Tata said. The Tata Swach – Hindi for “clean” – meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, and doesn't require running water, electricity, or boiling, executives said.
It's cheaper than boiling water, cheaper than bottled water, and 2.5 times less expensive than Hindustan Unilever's low-cost Pureit filter, according to data provided by the companies. Tata will sell two versions of the 19-litre Swach container, priced at
749 rupees ($16.11) and 999 rupees ($21.48), depending on the material.
The filter itself costs
299 rupees ($6.43). It will purify 800 gallons (3,000 liters) of water – enough for a family of five for a year – before it automatically shuts down.
Hindustan Unilever's Pureit filter, which also does not require access to running water or electricity, costs 2,000 rupees ($43.01), with a replaceable battery kit that costs 365 rupees ($7.85) and can purify 1,500 litreof water. Hindustan Unilever says it sold more than three million Pureit filters for the fiscal year ending March 2009, with sales of 1.9 billion rupees. The Swach, a pet project of Ratan Tata, is the group's bet that the private sector can offer a better, consumer-based solution to one of the world's most persistent health problems than most governments in the developing world can. Some 1.2 billion people globally don't have access to safe water, according to a 2006 UNDP report. Almost 80 per cent of diseases in developing countries are associated with water, causing some 3 million early deaths, according to a 2009 UNESCO report. In India alone, 380,000 children die each year from diarrhea, according to UNICEF. Tata's water filter grew out of a decade of research and development. It uses paddy husk ash as a matrix, bound with microscopic particles of silver to kill the bacteria that cause 80 per cent of waterborne disease, executives said. The current model doesn't neutralize chemicals like arsenic and fluoride, which contaminate some ground water in India, but future versions will, executives said. Paddy husk ash has long been known for its cleansing properties – it has been used traditionally for tooth washing – and India produces about 20 million tons of it a year. Initial production will be one million units a year from a Tata Chemicals plant in Haldia, West Bengal, with a planned ramp-up to three million units annually within five years. Executives said they plan to invest 1 billion rupees in the project over the next five years, and eventually export the filter to Africa.

Hindustan Lever's PureIt battery now costs Rs 550 and they have the lousiest after-sales service in the world. In fact, I have quarterly fights with their franchisee outlet here and know all the staff members by name and nature. The filter also gathers moss sometimes. HLL can't explain why.

Hope Tata Group will do better.

that's my two ounces on water filters.

Hi Birds.
Wish you Happy New Year and Pongal celebrations.
Really it is very good news of this article.

The location in which I am living , Talupla is fluoride effect area. Can you please take this to the TATA technos to add this with these filters so that it can be more useful ( Multipurpose). If this technology is applied we can implement through the NGOs net work that we have in the Anantapur and Nalgonda Districts..

Hi all. Morning. Discovery or an invention of a useful device is really great and its is its utility in the hands of the consumers.
Thanks for the Birds of the BiOS to take my doubts to the notice of TATA People.
My idea is to add or find ways to add this : Many Mandals in Aanantapur and Nalgonda Districts in Andhra Pradesh are the victims of the Fluorosis.
Your cheap water purifier becomes more useful and meaningful if you find the ways to add a device that can purify the water besides eliminating the high flouride content from the water. This will promote more marketing too.
I do hope TATA Swatch water purifier is looking forward to shaking hands for a defloridizer to add.
Cheers

If any of you know where to get it - I tried contacting the TATA division responsible for it and they claim that my email was forwarded, but I never got a reply. I also asked for a contact in Secunderabad where they have a regional office according to the website, but no response.
I saw an announcement that by June 2010 it would be available in stores throughout India,
so I can wait but I wanted to test a unit before then.

BTW, "Swach" sounds the same as "Schwach" which means weak in German. FYI.

Just now I came across a blog from someone visiting projects in India and describing an indigenous developed water purification system (reverse osmosis). The picture however shows a de-fluoridation plant with the name TATA Projects Limited! See the last picture here:

So you may want to consider contacting the byrraju organisation.
They are located in North Hyderabad, Satyam enclave in Jeedimetla village on NH7.
Hope this helps,
Cor.

Dear all/prashanti/srinivas/suresh A,

Is there any update on the economic and effective water filter we saw in the institute we visited near sewagram in our trip last time?
I remember them saying it will remove floride too?
TATA being commercial , they will be sure to add there profits to it. But this one which we saw is done by non profit org.And can be made into any size we require also needs only minimal maintainance. No battery nor plastics.( food grade or whatever)

I think sastry garu got one to hyderabad as a sample that day. Please pass some update on this if you have any.
Also I remember srinivas garu( AMMA)  also had some correpsondance on this. Kindly update here with any information you have.
Thank you
Best regards
Sudarshan

Hi Sudarshan,

I have been wanting to promote as a good alternate for the commercial water filters and as a safe mechanism for drinking water. But so far no luck in procuring even one through Prashanthi or Mr Prasad (Sarvodaya). If I get hold of atleast one, wanted to showcase it in the exhibition and still hoping it would happen before it closes on Feb 15.

If anyone has one, I would like to borrow if for a few days.

Thank you,
Suresh A

There has been a considerable effort behind this initiative and unfortunately couldn't take off.

I spoke with CSV people directly and tried to procure some filters. Due to the T agitation they didn't send. They are doing some work in NIRD and wanted to bring when they come here. Otherwise we would have received around 5 to 10 filters.

The one filter that Prasad garu brought when we went to Sevagram, I gave it in Mehboob Nagar Collectorate and it is now kept in Social Welfare Dept. office.
