Hi Friends,
Today I happened to visit Sri Sathyasai Old Age Home in Whitefields, Kondapur.
Location and Direction: This is towards the left side when coming from the Kothaguda junction towards Jayabheri, the lane which is used by most of the IT people to go to DLF and also to other IT companies in the vicinity.
Year of Establishment: 1992. Santakumari garu started it in the year 1992 when the entire area was like a forest. In 1991, her husband expired and there was an urge in her to start this home for elderly. From 1992 to 2005 govt. provided support @ Rs. 300 per month per one old person (10 rs. per day). In 2005, they discontinued from govt.
Area: It is a 500 sq. yd home, very neat and clean, spacious and serene. The photos of all the gods welcome the moment one steps in to the house.
Current Strength: 10 old people
The children of those elders drop them here.
Services: Free
They do not charge any fee at all.
Health of Inmates: There were people of age 105 too and others are 90, 80 etc., but still none of them has any ailment or health problem... not even sugar. Once when one of the inmates had some problem, baba operated her. Similarly for another inmate he treated a disease and provided cure.
Source of Income: Their source of income initially was the sale of pickles and all. They used to have a cow and grow vegetables for themselves. Now the Sathya Sai Devotees in Telecom Nagar provide support.
Specialty:
I am really amazed by the belief of the Founder, Santhakumari garu, on the providence of god. So far they didn't advertise and they don't go and look out for old people.
I wondered there would be a flow of people as she doesn't charge any fee and how she has been coping. She mentioned that without god's permission no one can ever step into this house and if god has given His consent, why should she object!!
Vibhuti Leela happens at this Home occasionally. Vibhuti oozes from the photos of Sathya Sai Baba and the chair that she set aside for Swami.
Many Swamijis visit their home. China Jiyar Swami, Sivanand Baba and many more (whose names I do not remember). Santakumari garu takes these old people on religious trips. Now they are planning to go to Bhadrachalam, the date of which is not yet fixed.
Requirements:
When asked about any requirement she didn't specify anything. She says whatever is required it is being arranged by baba somehow or other and so far she didn't ask anybody for anything. She said clothes are also sufficient enough.
A. Medical Checkup:
There was a doctor who regularly visited them and provided free checkup, treatment and medicines but he died recently and from then on no doctor is serving them free. They do not have serious ailments but regular checkup would be good.
They gave one lakh worth of homeopathy medicines given to them by Sathya Sai Devotees to a sai temple as no doctor is visiting them.
Addressed this requirement by informing to Dr. Sundar. Dr. Sundar is planning to visit the home this Saturday or Sunday.
B. Water Problem:
They have water problem this year and they are buying water. As this is her own house, asked Santakumari garu if we can plan for rain water harvesting pit. She said the place might not be enough. I asked her that I will try to get the experienced ones and then check out the possibility of storing the rain water, She didn't object.
If we have donors to visit the home along with the resource persons to check the possibility of digging rain water harvesting pits, it would be great. As this is the own house for the home, there will not be any problem.
C. Arranging Devotional Trips:
If there are donors who are specifically interested in the welfare of old age people and interested to do programmes for them, then it would be good if they can sponsor their visit to holy places like: Bhadrachalam, Mantralayam, Datta Kshetras etc.,
All in all it was a very great feeling to visit this home. There is a bhajan every Saturday by Sathya Sai Devotees at this home. Interested can visit.
