Friends,

I have good news to share with you all. We have a concrete plan to implement now with respect to Education.

We have ILP (Indian Literacy Project) and the Duke University Students’ programs to guide us in teaching to pre-primary and primary school children.

We will find out the organizations which are working to provide quality education and innovative teaching methods for higher classes.

All the groups which adopted govt. schools can get trained in the nuances of teaching. Also if teachers (vidya volunteers) are willing, we can provide them additional training with the experienced faculty.

Some of our TMAD volunteers attended a training session of ILP and it was really good.

Loksatta party is planning to work in 46 govt. schools in Kukatpally and for this academic year they concentrate on the pass percentage of the students of 8th, 9th and 10th  standard.

We will have a quarterly meeting of all volunteers and groups to share our experiences of teaching and the ways we learnt over the period.  The goal is that by next June we will have an ideal lesson plan and the methods to teach children of different age groups and background.

No group looses its identity and credit will be given to each and every person from whom we learn particular technique. This is like a class room wherein we learn to implement in the schools that we adopt.

I take this opportunity to request our members to come forward to be active volunteers of BosF.

There will be informative sessions to the mailing list of BosF members too. Depending on the situation and availability of resource persons, we will arranged three sessions over a period of six months.

Thank you.

with regards,
PRASANTHI.

Dear Birds,

Lakshmaiah, his friend (sorry I forgot his name) from Helping Hands and I (along with my father) visited Pavan garu of Lead India to discuss about the educational programme of BosF.

We are clear that we do not want to teach syllabus to the students nor act as substitutes to the teachers. It is only that we will try to provide what is not being taught in schools due to different constraints and also offer value addition by innovative method of teaching concepts.

The following are identified as the requirements:
1. Spoken English
2. Communication Skills
3. Interpersonal Skills
4. Experiments - Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Maths
5. Vocational Skills - Not necessarily teaching a vocation but providing them info. on various vocational courses available for them to stand on their own.
6. Drawing Skills
7. Writing Skills
8. Creative Writing
9. Leadership Skills
10. Practical Skills (or whatever good name we can give to the problems/requirements that we face/need everyday)

Initially my idea was to get an assessment of each student on each subject from 1st Standard to 10th Standard so that we can measure the progress of the child every quarter and at the end of the year.

Pavan garu mentioned that every govt. school has the assessment record of each child which is a mandatory record compiled in particular interval. So we need not assess but can take the existing records as base.

The serious problems of the children are, though they know the subject they cannot express it well as they do not know how to write well, spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes etc., Similarly drawing skills, to draw diagrams and figures. If we can help them overcome these problems, they can secure good marks.

If we can consider each topic as a project and come up with a lesson plan, material and no. of hours, we can execute them with precision.

Note: These are stipulated for 8,9 and 10th students. Not primary classes. We can even consider 3, 4 and 5th class students as one chunk and 1 and 2 classes as another chunk.

The first step is to identify a school where we want to implement or which we want to adopt (most of us work in one or two schools, so this wouldn't be difficult).

Get the assessment record of each child and divide them as groups based on their requirements (not A,B,C grades)

Request time from the Principal and coordinate with volunteers.

Conduct classes and evaluate regularly.

This way, if we can work for a minimum of 3 years consistently, we can gauge the progress or usefulness of our teaching. (of course many other factors add to the results not just our teaching).

Please let us know how many of you are interested in this programme. Once we are ready from our end, I am planning to organize a session of Pavan garu on Education as the topic or any particular aspect of it that we want to know.

I think this works out well for BosF concept and no group need to feel like they are working for someone else. Each one of us work for our own groups in the schools that 'WE' as 'INDIVIDUAL GROUPS' identified. However we can leverage the knowledge that each one of us have and that we compiled from others. BosF is like a open source project. Whoever wants to share can share their knowledge, whoever wants to acquire and learn, can gladly do so. No compulsion whatsoever for anything.

Its been a while that we met as BosF. As proposed earlier, instead of meeting at a park we will visit any home, spend time there and conduct our meeting at that premises only.

This time we wish to go to DESIRE Society, a home for HIV affected children. I know this is far but this is how we can go to each and every place in twin cities.

Requested Lakshmaiah and Mantri of Helping Hands to talk with them and find out if 11 am to 1 pm time is fine for them (as this is far, I do not think we can reach before 11 am). May be we all can have a luncheon meeting too at a near by restaurant (ABVP :) )

Hello Prashanthi, Iam glad to see some concrete plans taking shape for
providing better education to the needy children with emphasis on the
quality of education. I couldn't respond earlier due to some personal
obligations. However, I heartfully congratulate all those who are
striving in this endeavour. Already majority of the aspects concerned
with the personal, social, psychological and cultural development of
the child are enlisted above. I would like to add one more topic -
"Moral or ethical values".

Emphasis on Moral values : I feel that this is the need of the hour as
our culture is degrading very fast and people are rapidly being
absorbed into the vicious circle of commercialisation in every field.
Even the parents of the children are so self-centered that they give
more importance to their benefit or profit rather than judging what is
right and wrong. In such kind of scenario, its also our responsibility
to teach moral values to children. We need to make them learn the
great values of our indian culture. Our social customs such as
importance of personal bonds, guru-shishya relation, treatment of
athidhi and inculcate humanity, compassion, patriotism etc. There are
many many more values and morals in our Indian society which makes our
country as a spiritual guide to the whole world. We need to uplift
those values and maintain our spiritual heritage.

Request you people to consider this aspect also among the topics to be
taught to the children, as many schools are busy making the students
learn the academic topics and gain marks by hook or crook. children
work hard only to gain marks but not knowledge. Good Marks such that
they can get seat in a better college. Again good rank in college to
join in good university or top colleges. Top percentage in university
to get job in a top most company and ultimately earn lot of money. The
whole purpose of Education has become "EARNING MONEY" .... Majority of
the educational institutions, students and parents ... everyone look
at education as a tool to earn good money !

Swami Vivekanada said "We want that education by which character is
formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect is expanded, and
by which one can stand on one’s own feet."

I wonder how many institutions today could dare to follow that
definition of Education. However, Already as we are planning to take
care of strength of mind, intellect and standing on one's own feet. I
feel we also need to add developing a "noble Character". Unfortunately
lack of this is the root of all problems in the society. let's try to
work on this. We don't need to make them spiritual gurus, but minimum
they should know family values, respecting elders known or unknown,
giving values to family, relations, social customs, importance of
devotion and faith, good behaviour, kind nature etc.Let's try to
change atleast some children in these aspects. Atleast their lives and
many more lives associated with them would change forever !

Regards,
Manikanth.P.

Hi,

I want some straight responses....

How many of you are working in education field for more than 1year ?

- i mean doing atleast 1-2 classes every week, atleast 40 sessions in a year. Please give your details.
(My response : i working in same school (Yousufguda school), for same sections, for the past 2 years, regular teaching for the past one year....we cover everything that you have mentioned, but we need to do it in a much better way)

How many of you have a curriculum to teach, its easy to take classes on a day-day basis, but to do it regularly, you need a brilliant teacher or a curriculum which can guide the teacher.

- respond if you have those brilliant teachers or curriculum (a minimum 40 sessions in a year to the same batch, let me know only if that teacher conducted these sessions)

(My response: we dont have brilliant teacher, we count on her that way, even though she is having a MA in english, we had a brilliant volunteer who used to guide her every week, now he is out of town, so we have some problems this year, i am doing it remotely)

How many of you are funding this kind of education or teachers (again i repeat, sessions to the same section around the year)

- respond to us, we want to learn things from you.
(we are funding it personally for the last 2 years and continue to do this)

Until and unless, people share the details, their progress and the complete material (or atleast 10% of it), we cannot have a fruitful discussion.

How many are willing to fund for this kind of education for the next 3 years?

(My response : i can fund)

How much you can fund?

(My response : 6000 per month)

How many of you can take regular volunteer classes in the same school for same section?

( Myself and my friend omkar were taking regular volunteer classes, now we are only able to guide the teacher through online and phone, we had many volunteers participating but they were
not able to do more than 6 sessions with regularity)

Regards,
RajeshV

ManiKanth garu,

Well Said, I totally agree with you, During my childhood one of my favourite
subject is moral sciences, Only one period per week that too of fridays, there
is no exam for this subject,  Still I felt that class was intresting becase I
learned what is right and what is wrong through small stories. Even today
I feel that I had some impact of those stories in my life, As you rightly said
the need of the hour is values in Education
