AKSHARAM PROJECT – ADDAGUTTA SLUM

Hi all

 

In our last Sunday’s Meet about Addagutta Slum we decided to Issue Identity Card to the Students who are regular to our classes and/or school. We decided to provide Rs.2/- Biscuit Packet and 1 glass of Ragi Malt Every Day to these students.

 

Why this ID Card and how it is useful?

 

In open hard core slums it is very difficult to distribute something (breakfast, Snacks, old cloth or any such things/benefits) to specific people. Everybody will come forward to receive these benefits even they are not in our targeted group or they are not coming regularly to our classes/activity.

 

So to give these benefits to the targeted group or specific children we thought of issuing ID cards to the children who are regular to our classes. So that it is easy for us to identify and distribute our benefits who have identity card. It will be a very help full tool for every activity.

 

Ranganath will give you total updates and discussions of last Sundays meet about our AKSHARAM PROJECT-ADDAGUTTA (as you all know we named our SLUM EDUCATION PROJECTS as AKSHARAM).

 

I copied this from Miyapur Slum where MANAV Organization is doing the same (where they are providing daily breakfast to slum children)

 

We will also plan to implement this in AMRU NAGAR THANDA after discussing with Chintu of Serve the Needy Group

Immediate concern: 

All children dropped out from schools... need an immediate campaign of back to school

 

Dear All,

 

Ø  Required dedicated workers who come to Adagutta Slum every day .

Ø  It is practically not manageable by one person or weekly one visit.

Ø  All our efforts shows no result, if there is no repeated and daily backup

 

Rainy Season Problems:

 

1.       Viral fevers, cough , cold are spreading to all children and parents. It’s a thing of concern.

2.       HouseFlies, Rats are playing their part..One child got his fingers bulged because of rat bite..

3.       Problem with place to teach.. the shed need to be repaired, as it is unable to resist rain .

4.       Polluted food they eat (rotten).. with houseflies .

 

 

Other Factors

 

Ø  Children come under Hard Core Slum category, we can’t treat them as regular slum children.

Ø  Even one day of our not going to slum , they are dropping or not going..

 

 

 

Requirements

 

Ø  Daily 2 hrs of our presence is the slum is must... 7-30 to 8-30 teaching..then taking them to school or making them  go to school

Ø  Minimum 3 dedicated volunteers are required to teach them and to check for regular schooling.

Ø  One volunteer managing children little strict, other two soft and teaching them is required

 

Syllabus

 

Ø  Let us plan for a syllabus .. all plays, health and hygiene

Ø  Let us motivate parents, with regular visits and classes to them.

Hi All,

Here is the MOM of the last Sunday's meeting:

1> Volunteers are identified for each day of the week. 

2> Medical camp: Decided to conduct medical camp on 07-08-2011 (Sunday) by Mr. Sundar garu (Ayurvedic doctor). This camp will help us in bringing close to the people. By this, they can understand that we are here to help them and thus will give us required support.

3> Breakfast: Planned to start giving protein drink(suggested by Mr. Sundar garu) and tiger biscuit packet as breakfast to the kids. This will be given only to those kids, who are attending classes with us and going to school. Hence, we planned to distribute it at a suitable place between the Slum and school.

4> Education syllabus : It has to be finalized yet, but our main concentration for the beginning months is to develop discipline in the kids.

5> Play material : Planned to buy a board and chair to be used during classes. Also thinking to buy activity books . Need to ask the neighboring people to support us by keeping these material at their home after the classes.

6> Motivation to parents: To have a counselling session to the parents to make them realize the need for education and thus encourage their kids to study(Talking to Mr. Nehru garu of SEVA in this regard).

7> Local volunteers: Few people (who discontinued education at school level-7th class, 9th class- and doing odd jobs ) of near by area met our volunteers a week back and requested to give support by giving information about distance education from OPEN university. If we help them, they are interested to support us in our project. This will be very helpful to us because they can mingle with them easily.

8> Place: We need a closed room to continue our classes, as the present shed is not in a proper condition and also not suitable during rainy season. Thinking to talk to the church father to take permission to conduct classes at the church.

9> First aid chart: Ranganath has brought a first aid book which is very useful. Planned to conduct a session to them about basic first aid. Also need to prepare a poster with pictorial representations of basic first aid and distribute to them. 

10> ID cards: Decided to give ID cards to all the students with basic details and template of it is prepared by th volunteers. Also planned to give colorful badges(some smiley with their ID number written on it) which may fascinate the kids to put on their dress everyday. 

Also we decided to discuss to the parents about everything we are planning to do and give to them.

Hi all,

As already known, Medical camp was conducted on Sunday (07/08/2011) @ ADDAGUTTA slum from 9AM to 12 NOON. Following is the list of volunteers attended:

Medical camp was conducted by Mr.Sundar garu and his team. They were all very kind and helpful. We are unable to conduct the counselling class by Mr. Nehru garu due to lack of support from the parents. But Mr. Nehru garu was very supporting.

After the camp, Mr. Nehru garu gave us a brief speech about personality development and told that he will give us support whenever needed. 

Later, Mr. Sundar garu gave us very valuable information about the basic human necessities like - water, air(breathing), food and sleep. Also he answered the queries asked by volunteers regarding health issues and gave several tips.

Thank you Sundar garu and his team for all the support.

We  thank Mr. Nehru garu for giving us his valuable time and speech.

Also Mr. Nehru garu told about the personality development classes which they take on every Sunday for free of cost at following places. Anyone who is interested can attend them and even, they can share about any topic which they feel to tell to the audience.

• Every Month First Sunday : between 2 & 5pm at Chikkadapally City Central Library.
• Every Month Second Sunday : between 2 & 5pm at Main Library Afzalgunz, Hyderabad.
• Every Month Third Sunday : between 2 & 5pm at Sri Krishna Devaraya Samsthan Basha Nilayam, Sultan Bazar, Hyderabad.
• Every Month Fourth Sunday : between 2 & 5pm at Shirdi Sai Baba Samsthan Baghamberpet, Hyderabad

Hi All,

 

Ø  Cheers, We got a closed room to teach our classes at Adagutta.

Ø  Room rent 1200/- with current charges extra.

Ø  We got comparatively big room with good ventilation

Ø  We thought of taking this room on trial and error basis, to check how the children turn up to the place.

Ø  It is a good opportunity to show our commitment and standard in us by being punctual to the classes.

Ø  We are finding a clear cut change in the children from the time when we first started our classes.

Ø  We all are keeping our 100% efforts to make the slum educated and healthy as we discussed in previous mails.

Ø  Let us continue the same spirit and keep more efforts to make this task a great success

Dear Friends,

 

 We started our classed in the closed room from 7th sep 11.

Today we have played few rhymes and cartoon to create interest among children.

Children found the room interesting and very much intersted to come every day.
