Dear Birds,

Really we are working now as birds. Gathering livelihood material from all walks of life to distribute to the flood victims is really a great job. All NGOs are supporting the cause alongwith BoSF member organizations. But here I would like to discuss something about our integrity at this moment.

Where we are heading now?
Some organizations (members of BoSF) are taking part in distributing food packets, used clothes etc to the needy in Mahaboobnagar, Kurnool, Krishna & Guntur districts. But there is no message to BoSF from any organization about their efforts in the flood areas. If we share the information positively with other groups, it will help all other organizations to decide their activities respectively. Some organizations are going to Mahaboobnagar villages. If we know the information, another organizations may choose other villages. So our efforts will reach huge groups of people.

Please post your support information
I request all organizations to post their plans and movements on BoSF. So that we can work effectively.

We, 2 people from VMRG is planning to visit Alampuram and sorrounding areas tomorrow morning. We are planning to take some food preparation material, milk powder pockets, water purification sachets.

Thanks & Regards,

Suresh

A very apt mail, Suresh garu.

Friends,

Let us share the info. and let us do the things collectively. It is very evident from every quarter that the situation is much more worser that what we see or read in the media.

Key requirements include clothes, blankets, medicines, food material and utensils. The blanket supplier with whom Kiran spoke is the one who supplied Blankets to TMAD group and some of our friends earlier. Quality is moderately good for the price and they require a bulk order. Why not we all collectively buy from one vendor so that we can try and get any concession as well.

It seems Kurnool is the badly hit place and Kiran's friends/I&EYE volunteers managed to visit the villages where no help reached so far. Why not we consider going there? May be we can request the villagers to come to the railway station or the near by place to carry the material that we take with us?

==========================

Volunteers of I&EYE group visited the following villages and provided the villagers with food and water:

  • Tandrapadu
  • Panchalingala
  • Gondiparla
  • Devamada

All these villages are at a distance of 10km from Kurnool. I&EYE is the first group to visit and distribute the food in these villages, which were wiped out completely due to the flood. One has to walk for 4 kms along the railway track. No proper bus or train route.

They require everything we can support in any manner.

I&EYE group is initially planning to distribute blankets (min 1000) and some medicines (need to contact Dr Vasanth Kumar Garu of Heritage Hospital.

One of the blanket suppliers that we know are ready to provide each blanket for Rs. 100/-. (Contact person for blankets- Chandresh - 27845715 - Swastik Trading Co, Secunderabad)

==========================

I requested Eenadu Ramakrushna garu to provide us the ground level details from the villages and he told me that he will get back to us by tomorrow morning.

FRF group is also trying to collect the materials and work in and around Mehboob Nagar as they have good volunteer base in those places.

Please let us know how many of us are interested to visit the villages mentioned by Kiran. Why not all of us pool our resources there and do a concrete work in those four villages? What say?

Thank you.

with regards,
PRASANTHI.

One more update:

Manavata group volunteer Sriram garu is going to Alampur tomorrow along with some more friends. He got a DCM for Rs. 5000 approximately (including Diesel charges to and fro).

According to HARD Jagannatha Rao garu, there is a route from Gadwal. It seems Helpage India is coming with the Mobile Medical Unit (yet to be confirmed).

He is taking the following material:
Chapatis - 3000
30 to 40 bags of clothes
40 to 50 kgs of rice
2 bags of blankets
10 boxes of biscuits (each box contains around 25 packets)
Bread and Bun
Milk Powder Packets
If possible, Glucose packets as well

Sriram and his friends will start at around 6:30 am in the morning from Ashok Nagar, RTC Crossroads. You can give him a call to these numbers: 98660-18748, 99490-18748 and you can send any stuff through them.

Friends,

There is a lot to update. But the first and foremost being .. All the NGOs in Hyderabad are pooling their collection at Nizam Club and they are giving the material to any NGO who are willing to go to villages. Those of you who want to collect or already collected, can give your collection there. You can contact Umar Shafeeq from 9 am to 6 pm @ this
number 97002-28879.

Volunteers from BosF:
1. Kiran and his friends: They would be working in the four villages mentioned in my previous mail. So far Kiran gave an order for 1000 blankets. This is one place where no help was reached.

Kiran already shared his bank account details. You can deposit money in his account or else provide him with any other material that you want to send through him. Any help is of great use because nothing has been left for them and their friends are the first group to reach that place.

2. Rakesh, Umesh and friends: They are going to a place called Naguladinne which is one of the worst hit places in Kurnool. This is at a distance of 70 kms from Kurnool. Dr. Parameshwar will help them in their endeavour. About 100 people are feared dead in this place and around 2000 villagers are taking shelter in a govt. school. Except the concrete houses, everything else was collapsed.

They require the following materials:
  • Utensils
  • Rice
  • Bleaching powder
  • Dal
  • Oil
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Chilli powder
  • Milk powder
  • Clothes
  • Blankets
  • Face masks
  • Pain killers
  • Upma Ravva
  • Tea powder
  • Battery lights
  • Torch lights
  • Candles
  • Kerosene oil

Would be great if interested members can buy the required material and hand over to them.

3. First Ray Foundation also started collecting materials from friends. They run an orphanage home in Mehboob Nagar and they have good volunteer base in and around that place. The trio of FRF - Dr. Suresh, Narendar and Surendar hail from Kodada. You can give a call to any of these numbers and find the details: 98854-02801, 91770-03772, 98498-85562.

4. Suresh Ediga's cousin - Kurnool city and near by places: Our Suresh Ediga's parents also live in Kurnool and they had to vacate their house. They are now staying in his cousin's house where another 70 villagers are also seeking shelter. His cousin (Venkat) is working in IBM and through the support from his colleagues he has been helping the 70 members and also going to the near by places. You can contact Venkat @ 98661-73569.

5. RAYS group: One of their members, Mr. Ravi Shankar, hails from a village in Kurnool. The place they are staying is somewhat safe it seems. They are planning to keep this place as base and wants to go to near by villages. You can contact Deepak @ 99858-26346.

6. VMRG Suresh garu also has been doing good work through Loksatta party and he is ready to coordinate with us. He is planning to go to Alampur. 98499-70455.

7. Manavata group Sriram will be going to Alampur tomorrow. Please refer to my previous mail for more details.

Will keep you posted if any of our member groups are working.

One Mr. Padmanabham, a pharmacist by profession is willing to provide "SafeWat" powder in bulk. But it takes 2-3 days to prepare 10 bags. SafeWat is a brand name of another company but he is willing to use the powder combination formula for this purpose. He is thinking about the legal issues and will confirm us by tomorrow afternoon.

With one kilogram powder we can clean 1000 (thousand) liters of water. This helps the people to survive for atleast a week. If we get this powder in bulk, we don't need to carry lakhs of water pockets.

I will update you tomorrow.

Suresh garu,

I have been thinking about the Wardha water filters but it would be a huge budget and it takes time as well to bring them.

I think we can get a solution within hours. Getting water filters from wardha in this moment is difficult I think.

Please check this link. We can prepare the powder.

Please go through the link about PUR water purifier. But unfortunately it is not available now in India. I spoke to Mr. RK Rao, a water expert and associated with Population Services Internatioal (PSI) but filed to get the pockets in Inda.

I came to know that a good number of sochets are available in Unisef. I tried to speak with them regarding this but nobody is willing to provide proper information there.

Anybody can have a trial?

Suresh

Procter & Gamble: Safe water through a powder
The signature program for P&G's Live, Learn and Thrive™ corporate cause - helps address this critical issue by the use of simple, household-level water treatment technology: PUR™ Purifier of Water.

P&G has committed to long-term, not-for-profit provision of PUR in the developing world in an effort to reduce illness and death, particularly in children. The Children's Safe Drinking Water program provides PUR through sustained social markets and for emergency relief.

A 4-gram packet of PUR treats 10 liters of water. PUR effectively kills bacteria and viruses and removes parasites and solid materials. Five clinical studies show that use of PUR can reduce diarrheal illness in children by an average of 50%.

Working with essential and wide-ranging partners, Children's Safe Drinking Water has provided PUR for emergency relief in nearly every major natural disaster in the last three years, including the Southeast Asia tsunami, hurricanes in the Caribbean , floods in the Philippines and Bangladesh , and earthquakes in Pakistan and Indonesia. Most recently, PUR has been provided to victims of flooding and cholera outbreaks in Ethiopia and Kenya .

In collaboration with Population Services International (PSI), the US and UK governments, and others, Children's Safe Drinking Water has established social markets in Kenya, Pakistan, Uganda, Malawi, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Botswana, Indonesia, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and Nigeria.

A key component of these social markets is education about the importance of safe drinking water to bring about long-term behavior change. Educational efforts are currently being focused on local school programs and health clinics.

The two-pronged approach of P&G's Children's Safe Drinking Water program—distribution of PUR in social markets and for emergency relief—has been effective to date. In the last four years, Children's Safe Drinking Water has provided more than 750 million liters of safe drinking water and helped avert more than 30 million days of diarrhea.

Rakesh, better to ask Umesh to deal with Unicef. You and I are not 'tough people' to do the task. I am trying to reach Unicef people from yesterday afternoon. Mr. K.Srinivasarao of Loksatta visited Unicef office also but found no reply.

      Prashanthi and others,

Thanks for the efforts for helping out the unfortunate people from the floods. The one thing that is missed in the list and is very very important is water. I suggest water purifiers, which does not need power. We also need to make sure that there will be volunteer who can dispense purified water to all around. We need volunteers who can motivate the people there to maintain hygiene and to make them motivated to do self help. This is very important as even if there is food, we need to make sure that there is hygiene maintained. The after effects of flood are very dangerous for spreading contagious diseases.

Are there any specific water purifiers, which do not need power and fast output? I would like to carry them with me in my visit to Kurnool. I do not mind spending some money for the purifiers and some preventive medicine (I need some suggestions here also as to which one to carry).
I will be going to Nellore as well after Kurnool (taking public transportation). Does any body know how is the transportation situation now in Kurnool, Prakasham, Nellore and while coming back via Guntur? I may also go to Khammam (Paloncha) on the way back if time permits. I would like to visit on Thursday or Friday and come back on Saturday. Thanks in advance for any inputs.

From Guntur you can reach Kurnool easily via Vinukonda, Markapur, Pedda dornala. Or Markapur, Giddalur, Nandyal. Both routes are okay now. Transport problem is from Hyderabad only. Authorities are saying the road will be clear by today evening but still works are going on.

(Rakesh.. pls check this again as you are planning to Kurnool tomorrow morning. Better to have a final check).

Giri garu I think you can do something for krishna district victims as good stuff is going to Kurnool and Mahaboob districts from hyderabad itself and no need to overconcentrate on them. Hopefully Guntur district Krishna shore people needs more stuff now. There is a threat of flood nearby areas of Repalle.

Water pockets are also sufficient as of now. It is advisable to bring Chlorine Dioxide powder which we can use to clean the flood waters and make them drinking water. Giving water purifiers and filters is the 2nd stage process. First of all there is 3-4 feet waterdust in every home. They must be cleaned first. After that only we can provide them purifiers etc.

      Regards,
