Dear Colleagues,

The Bioprotocols working group is planning two breakout sessions (zoom link) at the upcoming HARMONY meeting (https://combine-org.github.io/events/) on April 27 and 29, 1-4pm EDT (both days).  In the breakouts, we will discuss the Protocol Activity Modeling Language (PAML), an emerging standard for laboratory protocol specification and interchange.  We are inviting stakeholders that want to learn more, and to help shape the direction of Bioprotocols.

Current Bioprotocols participants include: Smart Information Flow Technologies (SIFT), BBN Raytheon, CRI Paris, London Biofoundry, Strateos, iGEM, Friendzymes, University of California San Diego, Opentrons, Teselagen, Synthace, Protocols.io, HighRes Biosolutions, Unicamp, NIST, University Politecnica de Valencia, University of Washington, Edinburgh Genome Foundry, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Boston University, and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Session 1 (Wed April 27th 1-4pm EDT):  Demonstrating the Protocol Activity Modeling Language (PAML)

In this breakout, we will introduce and demonstrate PAML. The session will focus on demonstrations from PAML stakeholders, including sample protocol specification, and tools to create and convert protocols into different protocol languages. The organizers will prepare notebooks for participants to share and have a hands-on introduction to PAML.  The session will have two parts: (1) introduction to PAML (for general interest), and (2) hands-on exercises with PAML (user and contributor focus).

Session 2 (Fri April 29th 1-4pm EDT):  Steering Development of the Protocol Activity Modeling Language (PAML)

In this breakout, we will discuss plans and solicit community input on developing PAML. The session will focus on steering organizational, standards, and software development activities to foster further maturation of PAML. We will also identify and plan for additional meetings and demonstrations that expand PAML capabilities, validate the specification and software, and serve to build a larger community.

Registration and participation in HARMONY is free and the breakouts will be 100% virtual through Zoom:
