BigBlueButton 0.8-beta released!

The BigBlueButton development team is pleased to announce the BETA
RELEASE of BigBlueButton 0.8.

After eight months of development, many internal sprints and testing
cycles, and numerous “when will the beta be released?” questions on
our mailing lists, we are happy to reach this milestone.

In terms of the overall progress towards the final release, we can
cross off Step 3.

Finally, a bit of history. Back in 1997, when Richard Alam (the lead
architect of BigBlueButton) was a masters student in the Technology
and Innovation Management program at Carleton University, his
supervisor was Tony Bailetti
(http://www.sce.carleton.ca/faculty/bailetti.html). Tony had this
crazy idea to create an open source web conference system for distance
education and Richard was up to the task.

Tony has been waiting four years for record and playback in BigBlueButton.

This release is for you Tony.

I suggest you take snapshot of your VM along the way so if something
doesn't work you can roll back.

Let me know if there are any errors and suggestions to improve it.

thanks for the packaging of 0.8-beta. While following the installation procedure i got the following error:

We are looking forward to test the 0.8-beta in our team. Also one of our clients is willing to run the beta in his production environment.

Wow! We plan on (at least) a four week beta testing for
BigBlueButton. There's no date set for the final release -- we
release on quality, not dates.

So if you plan to run it in production, please let us know of any
problems you encounter asap so we can fix them.

I correct the latest post: looks like it is required to install the latest ruby as mentioned in the second section of the installation guide, even if i don't want to use the record-playback. After installing ruby it works like a charm. Thanks!

after the server installation succeeds i got the flash error #2032 which i remember somehow from our own development: RSL Error 1 - 4. Does anyone else got this error too?

I installed a clean machine without any previous installation. Any ideas what to do?

Hmmm ... Just tried demo and it worked. I'm using Flash 10.3.183.7
(Google Chrome). Can you right-click within BigBlueButton and check
the version of Flash.

Good morning Fred,

we have here Flash 10.3.183.7 for Firefox 6.0.2 under Ubuntu 10.04-Desktop-64b. Still not working.

Under windowsXP, we have 10.3.181.34, Firefox 3.6.18, it works out of the box. Remarkable is that when opening the first time the demo.bbb.org you can see that flash is downloading necessary libraries before the blue preloader appears. Thats the missing part for the other environment. Maybe thats a bug in the particular implementation of flash for ubuntu. We will test with another flash/firefox version soon and give a you feedback.

Hi Fred, thanks for the hard work and congratulations on this

I just tried it out and ran into a few issues:

I uninstalled 0.71a by running:

sudo apt-get purge bbb-freeswitch-config bigbluebutton
sudo apt-get autoremove

Then, I restarted the server.

I followed the installation instructions at:
http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/08InstallationUbuntu

Everything went fine until step 4: sudo apt-get install bigbluebutton
The installation hung at "Waiting for FreeSWITCH to start: ......"
The dots filled the terminal for 5 hours. I then restarted the server
(maybe a mistake?)

When the server came back up, I ran:
dpkg --configure -a

Then finished the rest of the installation instructions without error.

When I run bbb-conf --check I get:
** Potential problems described below **
# The following properties in /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/bigbluebutton/
WEB-INF/classes/bigbluebutton.properties have no value.
# bigbluebutton.web.logoutURL

When I try to use the demo from the home page, it loads:
http://<my ip>/client/BigBlueButton.html

...but the page is blank. I think it may be a flash issue.

I've tested in Firefox 6.0.2 and Chrome 13.0.782.220 m with Flash
10.3.183.7 on Windows 7.

instructions. I understood that to mean that I needed to remove all
traces of 0.71 before I could install 0.8, which is what I tried to
do. Does it actually mean I cannot install 0.8 on a machine that has
had any previous version of BBB at any point? Or did I simply not do
enough to remove 0.71?

Correct. We didn't intend to say "this doesn't upgrade from 0.71a"
and have everyone try to guess how to uninstall BigBlueButton.

There are only two types of outcomes with installation: it works or
its broken, there is no in between. We must have tested the packaging
about twenty times to make sure it works (or at least as best we could
determine on our test servers). However, we decided to not hold the
release of BigBlueButton 0.8-beta on the upgrade process.

We're working on the upgrade process now, which will likely require
further updates to the packaging. When done, there won't be any
uncertainty as we'll test it first to make sure the upgrade works too.

we had recently managed successfully to install the 0.8-beta version on a machine which had previously installed 0.71a. The trick for us was to remove all the major packages of BBB by ourself. Here our deinstallation history:

sudo apt-get purge bbb-freeswitch-config bigbluebutton bbb-apps bbb-apps-deskshare bbb-apps-sip bbb-apps-video bbb-client bbb-common bbb-config bbb-freeswitch-config bbb-openoffice-headless bbb-web tomcat6 nginx red5
rm -rf /var/bigbluebutton
rm -rf /var/www/bigbluebutton

Maybe that helps you...

We're currently working on updates to master and will refresh the beta
repository shortly (we're cycling through iterations of Step 3).

When everything looks solid, we'll then move to Step 4 for widespread testing.
