Hi all,

My name is Sanne de Roever and I am an independent data scientist.

I have a background in statistics, methodology and some philosophy of science. The last 10 years I have been working as a data scientist. Before that I have built data systems as a software engineer and solutions architect.

Around 2007 I attempted to build a graph database company aimed at modelling data in motion and data at rest; more or less along the lines of Len Silverston with addition of the modeling of messages. The (time versioned) graph database worked out, and has been used by the Dutch military internally to model ship to shore communication and military base security signals; alas to little profits.

Ontology ("semantics") has been bugging me since then; but the learning curve always kept me from diving in. This year I decided to finally add some ontology to the epistemology, sparked by a critical thinking excursion.

My impression is that ontology is gaining ground (also due to the neuro-symbolic discussion). My focus is on OWL and linked data for its practical applications for now. OWL, although hampered by its pragmatic aims and a rough start, seems to be having somewhat of a reboot. One of my thoughts is that linked data might be more sell-able.

My journey so far started with Harald Sack's OpenHPI course, and a dive into:
- Building Ontologies With BFO
- The What and How of Modeling Information and Knowledge
- Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist
- Semantic Modeling for Data
And I am planning to read up on Maria Keet's second edition on ontology engineering once it comes out one of these weeks.

As a working example for myself, I am focusing on modeling IT systems. Both Netflix and UBS have been making headway in this direction; it is a field that I am familiar with and it actually still needs cleaning up. Linked data can add data modularity; both model and datum wise. Modularity works great for scaling.

Any thoughts, ideas or questions are welcome. I am looking forward to interacting with the discussion group.

Best regards,

Sanne
