I,m hoping some one can help me find the Church in Candelaria, Sao Miguel. I have only two more days here. I originally thought I found a picture of it but now I am thinking that this is a candelaria on another island. I was a little frustrated as we went through the town, it was not what I expected, streets very narrow, no where to turn around safely, almost got bit by a dog, got lost a bit, cars tailing me....yikes! can someone please help? I did notice an old church with no access and looked deserted on the main road, covered with bush....was that it?

I have church baptism record showing my third grandfathers birth as well as family names. says they are from nossa senhora de candeias of Candelaria.

I thought the link was for the island of sao miguel.

B1821-1851/SMG PD-Candelaria

If any one is familiar with that area please enlighten me. I am stomped.

thank you,

Tanya Smith

Tanya S,

There are multiple Candelarias in the Azores.

You didn't provide the whole link to your baptism, but the partial code reads as if it is Sao Miguel:
SMG PD-Candelaria
(Sao Miguel island - Ponta Delgada (council) - Candelaria (freguesia).

The name of the church in Candelaria in the coucil of Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel is called Nossa Senhora das Candeias (got that from the Azores Genweb).

Yes, the streets are narrow and people can drive closely together.

Wikipedia says the church looks like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candel%C3%A1ria_%28Ponta_Delgada%29

Maybe you should park the car, go to the praça de taxis and ask for a taxi driver to take you to the igresia.

Tanya,

Sorry to tell you this now but you would have been better off not trying to
drive there and hiring a taxi to take you around - several listmembers know
of some good taxi drivers. When we were there, our hotel was centrally
located and we could walk to the archives and almost everywhere else we
wanted to go. We even took the bus there. And trying to find a parking
space...........well I won't comment on that one. Hope you find what you
are looking for.

I'm leaving Friday and will visit Sao Miguel, Pico and Faial. Will it be
better to hire a taxi or take the bus? We're good walkers also but doubt if
we could see all that we want to just by walking. Appreciate any
suggestions.

Hire a taxi.  Some list members may know of some good ones that deal with genealogists.  Or you can go to the praça de taxis and ask for a bilingual driver and explain to him what you want.  I've asked them what they make in 1 day and then ask to hire them for the day at that rate.

Hi Tanya,

I live in S. Miguel. Where the hell have you been?!! :)
I would like to help but I have not enough information to!
First of all where are you staying at? Have you a cellular phone you can
use?
Candelária is a small village outside Ponta Delgada, direction Mosteiros.
Google maps will give you the way in seconds...

I have not much time free but I can find an hour to help you out

Do not be intimidated by tail gaiters
Break a few times and slow down, they'll get the message
I was in the islands last year and I was on vacation so no hurries for me
The trick is slow down when there is a straight and wave them by and ZOOM they go by
Like I wrote DO NOT BE INTIMITADED
Forget about  manners like road manners on the islands but that is another whole story

Yes, been to candelaria an ginetes. I just discovered via Google Earth that I missed a switchback when I went thru the town. Think I can find it tomorrow.  But now I am curious about the church that was deserted mid town on the right. I found the church in ginetes as well...unfortunately,  there was a funeral service going on. Just not my day.  I am staying at the lince hotel in Ponta delgada, my family emigrated to Hawaii in 1882. I speak zero Portuguese so it's been a little challenging. But having a wonderful first time. I'm still a newbie at this and would love to hook up and chat  about some history in that area if you have the time. BTW my grandmothers maiden name is da silva don't know much about thatnot just a few dates and names, no places. I can make myself available Tuesday or Wednesday.   Let me know.

Thanks,

Tanya Smith

I don't know Candelaria, but my guess is that the run-down church you found may be an ermida or capela.

We found the igresia Cheri u are correct, I spoke to someone who lives next to it. He said they are working to restore it and showed me how they laid the cobblestone..fun to listen to him and some tid bits of his memories. If any one needs pics for the two churches in Candelaria or the one in ginetes let me know.

Thank you all for your help.

I read an article in one of the local papers a few months back that work on this church went ahead w/out the priests consent. There is a whole lot of controversy over what is being done because it is not staying w/the old architecture of the church and few other issues. The priest is a puppet controlled by a church commission that what they say goes and priest either goes w/it or resigns Most if not all churches in the Azores have commissions..

The paper was not one printed in Candelária, sorry if I mislead you.
I read the article either in Correio dos Acores or Diário dos Acores. I have a friend in S. Miguel that once in awhile sends me a copy of either paper in PDF form. Either newspapers can be subscribed through the internet, pricing I do not know. If you Yahoo or Google the name of either paper you will get their URL then you can get to their homepage.
There is another paper in S. Miguel which is Açoriano Oriental which is the oldest newspaper in print in Portugal, that one too can be subscribe through the net.
