Hi, all!
I need help with these questions:

1.) According to Geneall and Azores Genealogy, Abraham Seriqui's mother was FORTUNATA (no surname given). I did read somewhere that the first son had the father's surname and the second son had the mother's surname. Would that mean her surname was SERIQUI? When Abraham died in Boston, his mother's name was listed as ESTHER MARKS. Which would be correct?

2.) Abraham had a daughter, MIRIAM (MARIANA) BENSABAT (her mother's surname), BENSAUDE, BENARUS (her father's surname). Two questions: Which first name did she go by. Miriam or the Jewish version, Mariana? She has BENSAUDE in her name, but the Bensaudes say we're not related. Why would that be in her name, when it's not in her siblings' names? This name was found in Geneall and Azores Genealogy.

3.) Another ancestor (in Geneall and Ancestry) married JOAQUIM AFLALO (ISAAC OHAMA). Why the two very different names? Which is really "my" ancestor?

Thanking you in advance for any information.

Hi, Karlushko!
I received the first two volumes of Jose Maria Abecassis's books and did copy all the pages concerning Benarus and Bensabat. I now have ordered the next two volumes through inter-library loan at my library. I can't seem to find "Seriqui Documentos" which I had previously thought was a 12 page booklet. I'm now waiting for the books to arrive at my library! I've been able to figure out some of the Portuguese but there is a lot more I can't understand. :-(

Hi, all (again)!

Karlushko gave me names of books to check out, some of which I already have, and others I will look into. But I still would like answers to the following questions:

This name was found in Geneall and Azores Genealogy.

3.) Another ancestor (in Geneall and Ancestry) married JOAQUIM AFLALO (ISAAC OHAMA). Why the two very different names? Which is really "my" ancestor? (Which tree should I be looking for?)

Fortunato is a surname. Portuguese people used gender on surnames long ago, think that
doesnt happen today. Ex: Coelho, Coelha; Machado, Machada. You will notice that
today records are without gender: Coelho, Machado, Gato, etc..
Fortunata is feminine for FORTUNATO. Today records are shown as FORTUNATO
