Group,

My cousin found out her grandmother Mary (Pine) Anselmo was from the island of Faial.  A great uncle Manuel Pine was naturalized and had come from Faial 10 Dec 1883 to New Bedford on the Whaling Bark Commodore Morris.

His residence in Faial was listed as Bria St. Cres.  Is that recognizable to anyone?  We are trying to find the fregoisa they came from.  The whaling crew records are only until 1860.  He came to California in May 1884.

She only listed the Azores on her records.  We can't find any ship records.

Thank You for any help,
Pat (Dutra/Anselmo) Nostrome

Pat,

You might want to scan the document (or provide the URL) where this info was found.

I don't research Faial.   A list of the freguesias (villages) and churches on Faial are on the Azores Genweb below.  Nothing seems close to me.  Maybe it will to other Faial researchers.

Hi Pat,

I find the wording to be anglosized because no one uses Street and Crescent simultaneously, and I would suggest the word "Bria" is intended for "PRAIA".  There 2 places; Praia do Norte e Praia do Almoxarife in Faial.

Praia do Norte was depopulated due to volcanic activity...I would start with Almoxarife records.

Regards,

Thanks Cheri and Margaret.

I will pass on the information.  I am including a copy of the naturalization where it was listed.

Thanks again,

This looks like it could be St. Cruz. Don't know what Bria is? This
was written by a non-Portuguese who was spelling from a broken English
pronunciation at best. I ran into this with one of my family's
records and they really slaughtered the spelling.

If Bria was pronounced Br-EYE-uh, then could it be Pr-EYE-uh, as in Praia da Vitória in Terceira? If it is prounced Br EE yuh, then I have no idea.

Hi Pat,

When I viewed the document, "Bria St Crez" I instinctively thought it to mean "Praia Santa Cruz" and doing a google search, it confirmed it.  Here's the link

Thanks Margaret.  It could be the island of Terceira since Faial would still be the departure.
It certainly looks possible.  I will forward this on to my cousin and we will try to research further.
I haven't seen many Pinheiros (or Pines) on Faial.  Maybe they were on Tercira.
Thanks again for all your effort,

I'm new to this group and my family is from Terceira. My Great Grand
Father was Jose Coelho Pinheiro and his father was Vital Pinheiro
Lourenco. So I know that there are quite a few Pinheiro's there. My
family was from Altares.

As I said, I'm new to this but hopefully this might help.
