Hello, I’m new to your site but hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.  I’m stuck going further on my Daddy’s side of the family.  Some of them were born in Hawaii but family originally came from the Azores.  I’m not sure if I gave enough info below to see if anyone has any idea how I might be able to move forward.  Thanks for any guidance at all.

Sincerely,  Vicki (Madeiros) Rabe

Joseph Cardoza – Born in Portugal 1871 – 1913  my Great Grandpa

Married Mary C Correia Cardoza (Born 29 Oct 1884 – 23 Oct 1968) My Great Grandma

They had the following children:

Mary Edith Cardoza – 31 May 1903 – 16 Feb 1988 – This is my Grandma on my Dad’s side

Mary Edith Cardoza married August “Gus” Madeiros – born in Hawaii 9 Jul 1901 died in Alameda CA 17 Jun 1940.  They had 3 children, one being my Daddy Albert Joseph Madeiros (Born 28 Sept 1925 - still alive)

Minnie C. Cardoza – 16 Dec 1905 – 11 May 1996

Philomena Cardoza – About 1906

Marian Cardoza – 28 June 1907 – 11 Nov 1940

Joseph Theodore Cardoza – 1 Dec 1908 – 21 Oct 1981

Lucille Cardoza – 19 Jan 1911 – 9 Jan 2006

Laura Cardoza – 3 Nov 1912 – 15 Dec 1994

Then Joseph Cardoza Died and Mary Correia Cardoza married Joseph Nunes Freitas and they had 3 additional children.

I’m having difficulty figuring out Joseph Cardoza’s parents to go any further, does anyone have any ideas?

I believe that my Grandpa August “Gus” Madeiros’s parents were Joseph Madeiros not sure when or where he was born and his wife was Ambrozina Dorego – 1874 Portugal and died in 1948 in Alameda, CA.  I can’t seem to find any information on my Great Grandpa (Joseph Madeiros).  Any ideas where to try and find more information on he and Ambrozina?

Vicki R,

You are going to have to find every piece of paper in the U.S. and Hawaii before jumping into the Azores.  A How-To guide can be found here on the Azores GenWeb site:

Hi Vicki,

It's not always the case, but the majority of Portuguese in Hawaii came from either Madeira or Sao Miguel island, Azores. I know some from Terceira and others from Pico, but they are vastly outnumbered by the former.

Also, you mentioned "Dorego" which is "do Rego" in Portugal and this is a name that comes from Sao Miguel, even though there are many on Terceira (who descend from Sao Miguel in the 1500s).
So I'm inclined to suggest you keep an eye out for Sao Miguel as their origins.

Madeiros is Medeiros in Portugal - also "de Medeiros" and very common to Sao Miguel.

Find the parents of Gus as passengers to Hawaii and go from there.

Good luck!

Vicki,

The 1920 Brooklyn Twp. Oakland, Alameda County, CA census says they came to US 1890.  Their first child Joseph is listed as born ca 1892 in CALIFORNIA. According o this it looks like they came to CA first and were either married when they came or married in CA.  Then the other children Mary 25, Rosie 23, Alfred 22, August 19 and Antonio are all listed as born in Honolulu HI.  I have tried to find Ambrozina, as her name is unusual and easiest to find, in 1900/1910 censuses but so far no luck as I am sure they massacred their spellings in the indexes. I had to go to FHC site to find them in 1920 census so I have no idea how Ancestry has it spelled in their index.  Ambrozina is in 1940 census in Alameda County CA living with her son.  I will keep looking as I have time fort their ship's manifest as if I can find these, they you should be able to find them on CCA site.  I think Joao Ventura might be able to give you some assistance for them also as I have an idea they came to US ca 1890 from Sao Miguel.

It looks like Joseph Medeiros and Ambrozina were married on  10 Aug 1889 in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii. So they both came to Hawaii with their parents. Have you sent for the death certs? It will usually give the Island of where they were from, also Obituaries sometimes list town and Island.

Hello “E” and Mr. Holmes,

Thank you so very much for taking the time to guide me forward, I’m so excited!  Is it alright if I get stuck again in the future that I email the group again?  I won’t bother you unless I’m really stuck!

Thank you again,  Vicki

Vicki,

This is a great list of people and whenever you need help, just ask. For the death certificates, if they died in CA try to get it from the county, if possible, as the state will take 6 months or more.  I would try to get their obituaries from the Oakland newspaper. They are buried at Holy Sepulcre Cemetery in Hayward.  I tried looking at the newspapers on Ancestry but so far did not find them but there is someone on this list much better than I at obtaining newspaper info.  Also if they belonged to any Portuguese organizations, I think Celeste, can guide you in that direction as she is from the area your family came from.

Vicki,

Joseph Madeiros died between 1920 census  and 1930 Oakland Directory.  I will try and find other directories to try and pin the date down a little better.  You can see Ambrozina's gravestone here:

Her son August is also buried at this cemetery.

I sent this to Vicki earlier, maybe someone can verify that it says Antonio do Rego was from Sao Pedro, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel? That is what I think it says.

Vicky
believe that Pam and Cheri have it righ.
They certainly are from Sao Pedro, Ribeira Gande.
However you also have his parents names: Francisco do Rego and Francisca Candida, one more generation.
Also the ages match, with what Eric posted, so you have fairly reliable information.

Hello, Hermano, Pam, Cheri and everyone,

I just want to say that I’m so thankful for all the help everyone has been giving me.  To start to track back where you’re family came from is well surreal.  I’m a bit addicted and want to work on this all the time.  Not possible but loving every minute that I do it.  It’s so exciting to see what doors open when you get a little piece of information.  My family on both sides seemed to not want to share info so it’s been exciting to see a bit into the old world of my family.  Well anyway I just want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the help you have so kindly given me.  You are an amazing group of people and I’m really enjoying being just a little part of that.  Thank you,  Vic
