Hi Everyone

I made a small addition to the Azores site that I hope will be helpful
to researchers...... I added a quick list of the villages and towns of
the Azores, sorted alphabetically by the village/town name. It seems
to me, that many people often only have a village name to start off
with so perhaps this might help them.

http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/villages_list.html

Good luck and happy hunting!

Wow Kathy, this is just great! I'm printing now and am going to put a copy
in the FHC here in Seaside to help me. Thanks so much.

Kathy,

Would Silveira, Pico be the same church as Lajes do Pico?  I recently found out this is my grandmothers home.

Thanks,
Pat Anselmo Nostrome

Pat

Silveira is not a town that I'm aware of. It might be a small village close by, but it is not on the map I have.

Kathy,

I don't know what it is exactly.  I found this neat site:

http://www.picoazores.com/english/pico_island/parish/lajes_concelho.php

History tells that Fernão Álvares Evangelho was the first man to set foot on land in Pico Island, and he entered through Lajes. The mother-church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was built in the 20th century, replacing the old church that was in ruins. The architectural setting of Largo General Lacerda Machado square, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, is quite worth the visit.
Located on the island’s central plateau, Lagoa do Paul is part of a nucleus of small lagoons surrounded by primitive vegetation of Pico Island. Mistério de São João is covered in dense forest, originating from marine eruption which joined the island. Furna da Malha, which is around 2 meters long, is a curious geological phenomenon. In Matos Souto park, near Piedade parish, covered in rare tree species, is the head-office of the Nature Conservation Services of the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In this municipality, our visitors find a pleasant and comfortable tourist village, Aldeia da Fonte, located in Silveira, the parish of Lajes, surrounded by trees, which offer its inhabitants comforting tranquility in a dream cenario.

I am attaching a map I got somewhere which shows it.

Thanks for all your efforts,
Pat Dutra/Anselmo Nostrome

Hi Pat,

I have not been active lately on the Azores Group but when I saw your message about Silveria a town in Pico I wanted to let you know that I know a Becky Madruga whos relatives are from that town and we are suppose to be related to her.  We have not found the exact connection because I have not completed that part of my genealogy yet.  We have the same relative name but I have not yet confirmed it is the same as her relative. Anyway she has lots of relatives from that town and you could also be related to her.

If you want to I could ask her if she knows your Grandmother if you let me know her name and approx age.  A lot of my relatives come from Lajes do Pico.  We have Machado, Nunes, Madruga, and many other names from there.  Let me know if you would like to persue this line.  My email address is vchri...@yahoo.com

Thank you,
Vivian (Silva) Christy

Does anyone have information on the town of Sao Mateus, St. Matthews, on the island of Pico? That is where my great-grandfather, Antonio Nunes, was born in 1840.  He came to the U.S. in 1860.  I am hoping to visit the town where he was born sometime in 2011 when I visit the mainland of Portugal and two of the islands (Faial and Pico).

Thank  you for any info you can provide.

Hello Maggie,

I was told my Becky Madruga that all the Madruga's are related.  I have relatives here in San Diego but have not yet done that line.  I know Becky has done her line back to 1700's. Manoel Goularte Gracia Madruga born about 1700 in Sao Matheus, Pico, Acores is Generation 1.  From there it goes to Generation 7 and lots of names.  I can contact Becky Madruga and give her your email address if you would like more information on that line. Let me know. Vivian

From what I am told all the Madruga's are related and especially if they are from Pico.  Will wait to hear from you and if you have names and dates I can look at what I have to see if any of the names match.   Thank you, Vivian ( Silva) Christy

All of the Madrugas descend from André Gonçalves Madruga, the elder, born in Faial (see Maldonado, Fénix Angrence, Parte Genealógica, p.201) and died in Angra (Sé) on 15-11-1558 (Idem.) Frutuoso says he lived between S. Mateus and Negrito. He married Isabel Dias Rodovalho, daughter of Diogo Vaz Rodovalho, who lived in Viana do Alentejo and died between 1512 and 1523 and Maria Esteves Cansado, who died between 1523 and 1527. See also Genealogias da Ilha Terceira: (Rodovalho: §1 Nº5, (Forjaz and Mendes, Dislivro-Histórica, Lisbon: 2007)

The above is from Genealogias das Quatro Ilhas: Faial, Pico, Flores, Corvo, Jorge Forjaz and António Ornelas Mendes, Dislivro-Histórica, Lisbon: 2009.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for that information.  I did not know that and don't think my friend Becky did either.  I'll let her know.  I wish all my relatives had information back that far.  Thanks again. Vivian (Silva) Christy

Please forgive me for hijacking this thread… I’ve just “returned to the living” after getting out of bed for the first time since last Friday with the dreaded H1N1.  This message was the first thing that I saw when opening up email.  It’s also the first time I’ve seen mention of Genealogias das Quatro Ilhas being used for research since it became available at the end of the summer.

I’ve not been fortunate enough to be in a position to purchase the set.  Is there any similar info (to what is below for the Madruga family) for the Fraga family?  My Fraga’s are from Corvo, and I’ve seen many that are from Flores as well.  I’ve long suspected a common link somewhere way down the line, and that Fraga’s on both islands share a common ancestor way back.  I was curious if anyone had the volumes and could take a peek.  It would be greatly appreciated!

Who was it that said there Madruga went to San Diego? I have a distent cousin listed fromt there. Other then that my Madruga line is speratic as they did not carry the sir names generation to generation for all the children. Most of mine are from around the mid 1700 to the 1900's.

There are 4 separate Fraga lines in Genealogias das Quatro Ilhas: Faial, Pico, Flores, Corvo, Jorge Forjaz and António Ornelas Mendes, Dislivro-Histórica, Lisbon: 2009. :

António de Fraga, married to Isabel Rodrigues,
was a native of Braga. He went to Flores between 1508-1510 in the colonization organized by Pedro da Fonseca. In the same company went his brother Pedro de Fraga, married to Margarida Rodrigues and her brothers Miguel and  Álvaro Rodrigues.

Francisco de Fraga lived in Flores and was married to Lucrécia Privado.

José de Fraga
and his wife Isabel de Freitas lived in Fajã Grande, Flores, circa 1750.

Isabel de Fraga was born about 1690 and died in Matriz-Horta on 6 Sep 1762; She married  Manuel Luís who was born in Flamengos and died in Matriz on 9 Oct 1757.
