Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Jacintho do Rego Baldaia
My name is Peter J. Baldaia, and I have been researching my family via
ancestry.com for the past few years. I am Azorean Portuguese on my father's
side. I am looking for more information on the do Rego Baldaia line. My
father was Joseph Rego Baldaia, born in Fall River, MA in 1923 and died in
Pawtucket, RI in 1975. His father was Francisco
(Frank) Rego Baldaia, born San Miguel, Azores in 1882 and died in Swansea,
MA in 1966. His father was Jacintho (Jesse) do Rego Baldaia, born 1841 in
Azores (probably San Miguel) and died after 1910 in Fall River, MA.
That's as far back as I've been able to go. I grew up in RI, but now live in
Huntsville, AL, so it is not possible for me to research primary records in
Fall River. The records I've found via the ancestry website indicate that
Jacintho arrived in the US in 1886 or 1887, but I have not been able to
locate a ship manifest. What has been fascinating to me is how many ways his
surname was listed. The Fall River City Directories initially lists Jesse in
the 1891 edition, where he appears as Jacintho Rego. In 1898 he is listed as
Jesse Drago (he is also listed this way in the 1900 Federal Census). In the
1905 City Directory he is listed as Jesse Rego Balday. In the 1910 Federal
Census he's listed as Jesse De Rego. I'm not sure why the name Baldaia
barely crops up-is that typical?
I have no sure record of Jesse after 1910, and don't know exact year of
death or where he was buried. I would love to be able to move back in time
through more distant generations from the Azores and (I'm
assuming) Portugal.
An interesting side note-I have recently had my YDNA tested to determine my
haplogroup and identify my distant paternal grandfather's people. It turns
out that I am in Haplogroup L (rare in Western Europe), and that I have a
very rare genetic marker that so far has only been identified in the Parsis
of India and Pakistan. It is surmised that my paternal line possibly arrived
in Portugal via Mediterranean traders from the Middle East - the other
possibility is a connection with the former Portuguese possessions on the
west coast of India.
This is all very interesting to me as I was told as a child that our family
descended from the Moors (my grandmother's nickname for my grandfather was
"Sheik" as she thought his distant family was Arabian.
My DNA indicates that this was clearly not the case!
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated!
