Long ago in a galaxie far away (i.e., when we were all quite a bit younger), my kid sister won a scholarship from the Portuguese-American Society in Rhode Island.

You guys should have seen the looks on folks faces as she crossed the stage to accept.

Tall, red-head, freckles and fair skin ... both her and my brother closest in age to her have the same complextion.

I am the oldest of five and my next brother & I share dirty-blond hair; I have blue eyes ...  he has brown.

The middle child in our family ... brother Daniel ... had olive skin, beautiful curly brown hair, brown eyes.
My mom did not cut his hair until he went to school. He looked like a male, brown-haired version of goldy-locks.

Not sure how to answer, so here's how were related:

He's my Grandfather's, Mother's Father. So, I'm assuming, yes. Is that
correct?

No ... this would be the maternal line.

I was asking in case DNA might help us.

At any rate, my family is from Ribeirinha, Faial.

I haven't gotted that far on which Island he was from. I do know his
(Daniel Franscisco de Rosa's) first wife, Lucia Jacinto Garcia was from
Pico. They had two children. She died a few years after they were
married. He then sent for her niece, Philomenia Jacinto, and they
married. She passed in 1939, Hollister, CA. They had 7 children.

Right now, I'm working on my Bettencourt line. I have most of the
information from 1933 back. I'm working on the 1993 to now. That's been
the hardest. My Grandfather's father was: Joseph with brothers F.J. or
Frank/Francisco, Antone, and William.

They all immigrated from the Azores. Lived in the San Leandro - Oakland
communities and the Hollister - Watsonville areas. Not to mention various
areas I'm finding for a short time in central valley.

Take care,

My mother always said her father, Manuel Borges Giesta had more reddish
hair, but I think when I look at the pictures it was more light brown with
red highlights.

My oldest son has dark hair and olive skin and my youngest son has light
brown hair, very fair skin with freckles and can not tan. They are half
Portuguese, 3/4 Irish and 1/4 French.

My youngest has a standing joke that he was switched at birth because he
does not look Portuguese at all. I have cousins that live in Ribeira Grande
and they are very fair skinned and have medium brown hair.

I have olive skin, very dark brown hair. My father had more dark complexion
through his lines. My mom had very fair skin through her lines.

Hi, All:

My ggrandfather, Joseph Lucas King, who is buried at Mission San Jose
w/the name of Joseph K. Lucas was about 6 ft tall, blue eyed, blond
from Sao Jorge.

When he landed in the Cape Cod area for a few years fishing there
before coming to the Bay Area, the other Portuguese fishermen said he
couldn'g be Portuguese because of the coloring.

I'm sure the Vikings and the Moors blood are evident all over the
place. ;o))

God bless.

I have a paternal great grandmother who had red hair and blue eyes with a very friendly outgoing personality.  I also have two cousins with very red hair, brown eyes and one also has freckles.  My father had hazel eyes (bluish-gray) and I have a grandson with very blue eyes.  My daughter (mother of the blue eyed grandson)  has crystal brown eyes (they look like jewels); my oldest son has very dark brown eyes (you can't see the pupils) and my younger son (middle child) has regular everyday brown eyes like his parents.  Throughout the family practically all of us have varying shades of brown hair.

Ginny,

It sounds like your daughter with the crystal brown eyes that looks like jewels might be your favorite child by the way you describe her with such love in the description of her eyes.

Linda. Add up the fractions. Half Portuguese. 3/4 Irish; 1/4 French would
make you son oneand 1/2 what? My guess is that he is actually 100% American.

I was waiting to see if anybody else was going to catch that the person was 150% instead of 100%.  But I didn't want to say anything.  So I kept quiet.

My father and his five brothers, from the Pico, were all light skinned and light eyed.  My mother whose family was from the Faial were darker with dark hair and eyes, however one of her Aunt's was a red head.  When I was born, I was so blonde that my mother said it was almost white and I also have a very light complexion and hazel eyes.  People always took me for Irish or German and when I told them that I was full blooded Portuguese they would tell me that they always thought Portuguese were black.  That said, I think that there is a mixture of "looks" on each of the islands and that no one particular area has just one.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.  We all have so much to be thankful for no matter what our circumstances.  Enjoy your families and friends.

I read somewhere that way back when the Azores were a stop over point for all kinds of folks. Moors, Flemish, French, English, Black slaves and more.  So this would explain the international looks and DNA of the Islands.

Happy Turkey Day to all!!

Re: Red Hair
My Portuguese "Duarte" family has redheads w/brown eyes. I had an
uncle and an aunt who had red hair/freckles. The red hair has
continued in their grandchildren, although none of their kids had red
hair. Green eyes have cropped up in another line from the fam.
Family records shows my grandfather's "maternal" grandfather (Antone
Medieros)... was 6'4 with red hair-freckles. It says he was
Portuguese, German, English. My family was from San MIguel. (later
Kaui, HI-California).

Sorry! Okay 1/2 Portuguese, 1/8 French and 3/8 Irish. I guess we are all
100% American then because I'm all Portuguese but born here.

Ooooh, now I'm going to pester my family at christmas and look at the
color of their eyes (we're all brunettes..unless the ones with grey
hair aren't). My dad was a blue-eyed blonde as a baby, dunno about his
brother. I'm half portuguese (quarter azores quarter madeira), quarter
scotch-irish, and quarter german. I was born with no hair and black
eyes. Eventually I did get hair (after more than 2 years of being the
baby boy in the pink ruffles) and as a kid I tanned real quick and
real dark, and my hair would bleach to have reddish highlights. My
sister was always paler with lighter brown hair and eyes (although had
blue which she was born). Now I'm a bit paler, I can burn in the sun,
my eyes are still almost black and my hair is dark dark brown and
absorbs the light freakishly. I have no idea where that came from. Up
till he took up golf my dad was real pale and his brother was so tan
that before I understood the concept of skin color and race I thought
he was black. Now dads a bit darker and uncles a bit lighter and both
have much less hair.

Sometimes I wonder where I got what from. For all I know my dark hair/
eyes/skin came from my grandfather (of german ancestry!) who is darker
than any of the portuguese relatives I've ever met.

Maybe someone should put together a website of pictures- the many
faces of the Azores! It'd be interesting to compare. (sorry, college
student in a biological anthropology class right now in the human
variation topic).
