Hello,
I was re- reading my gggrandmother's obit. and I came across something I need some information on.
It stated that she was a member of the " irmandade de santa christo ". Does any one know what that is??? or could someone translate it for me? I would appreciate any help I receive. Thank you

Literaly...  irmandade is sister hood.   In this case it must mean Society of Santo Christo

I believe it is one of the society, like the I.D.E.S. in California.   My Portuguese is not real good but I believe it is the Emigrates of Saint Christ.  Now "de" could mean "the".  I am not sure but you might check where she lived at because that group still might be around.  Most of the Society have been around for years and year.  I live in CA, in a small town Santa Cruz and we have several of groups like this and my great-grandparent help start some of these groups and like always you get involved at a young age.  Most of the Society deal with "Festa" from the old country.

Lisa, it translates as "Fraternity of the Holy Christ" men and women.  This group is derived from the Church of Santo Cristo (Holy Christ).  They normally get together for prayer or charitable works.  My aunt in Fall River belonged to it and her obituary said the same thing.

Ellen,

Generally, records generated in a country are of that country's language.  Records in Portugal will be in Portuguese, records in France will be in French, and records in America will be in English. 

You will have to learn to pick out the words and phrases to read the Portuguese records.  I learned how to do it and I've taught others.  There is a guide on the Azores GenWeb that shows you:
