I was in the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores web site this morning. What a
great advantage to researching our Portuguese heritage when this site is
completed. Thank you, Joao Ventura for all your hard work.

Carlos Machado's book for the genealogy of Sao Miguel is complete and online
and easy to read.

Good morning Mary,

Went to the site and it is indeed a great site, but I am unable to access any of the material. Clicked on the site for the Carlos Machado book and got an “ Unable”etc. message. Is anyone else having the same problem?

Is the entire site up and running or just parts of it ?

Very exciting to see all that will be available.

Great job Joao and staff.

Thank you so much, Joao for creating this fantastic site and Mary for
sending the link to this site.

I've been out of the genealogical loop for 7 or more years and am
thrilled to be involved again. I had done considerable research in
the mid-90's, taking one branch of my family in Sao Miguel back to
1650 and it's a shame that all the information I collected has sat
dormant all this time. I hope to upgrade my files so that I can
share this information on line.

I wonder if anyone will bring me up to speed on the origins, etc. of
the Carlos Machado book.

Just for your info my area of research includes Ribeira Grande, Maia,
Nordeste, Fenais da Ajuda and the surnames : da Camara Leite, de
Mello, Borges, Arruda, Bulhao, Medeiros, Affonso - to list just a
few. I have to go back to my research to check on the combination of
names that predominate like Moniz de Mello, etc.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Again, thanks so much!!

Marge,

All areas in the site are not working. Try http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/ then to the right click Manuscritos Genealogicos

When the page opens click the photo. http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/GenealogiaCarlosMachado/GenealogiaCarlosMachado_item1/index.html

It list the page to the Genealogias Carlos Machado.

You have to type in the entire URL.  It gets cut off in email messages and appears on 2 lines.

Try this:
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/
Left column, click Inventario Genealogico. ( http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/)  That's like the old DRAC/NEG pages that will be migrating here.

Carlos Machado isn't there.  Go here:
http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/
Left column, click Biblioteca Digital (http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/edicoes/introducao.aspx)
Far right, click Catagorias.
Under that, click Genealogias.
Then the Carlos Machado will open in the main screen.

Personally, I prefer to use Fr. Joe Viveiros index with the actual scan.  Easier for me to navigate.

Betty,

As far as I know, they aren't doing it in English.  Last summer, I summarized each section in English.  You can search the archives at: http://groups.google.com/group/Azores and type DRAC into the search field.  That will pull it up.

I was going to put my summary into the Files section, but though I'd wait and revamp it when the new CCA site is active.

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for getting in touch. Maia is also one of my primary
interests and from that area the surnames Cardosa Perreira, da Ponte,
Bulhao, Bulhoes, and Moniz appear. I have a Joao da Ponte born 30
Aug 1666 who married (16 Sept. 1690) Maria da Costa born 16 Nov 1671.

On a more contemporary note I have a second cousin, Virginia, whom I
met completely by accident in Sao Miguel in Lombinha da Maia in 1995
whose surname is da Ponte. There is also Raposa in my family but
since all of my research is at home and I'm in the office I can't be
more specific than that. I'll look it up when I get home.

Again, thanks!

Elizabeth,

I also have family members from this area - they seem to move around between Maia, Lomba da Maia, Ribeira Seca

My names are:

Medeiros Sampaio
Sousa Gabriel
da Ponte Rebelo

However, I have not gone back a long away.  I go back to around 1850 - 1875.

Thanks for the reply....MY problem is I haven't been able to get that far back in my Azorean Research mainly because the names keep changing so I have NO way of knowing IF we have a "connection"....:-(

Coincidentally, I too was in Sao Miguel in 1995...July as a matter of fact....could we have been there at the same time????  I WAS able to go to the Library and do "some" research but I don't speak Portuguese and they didn't speak English....I managed to get out enough words to let them know what I wanted but it was VERY difficult....for ALL of us....:-(

As far as I have found (but I too have not been able to get back too far) my family stayed in Maia, Fenais Adjuda, Ribeira Grande or Lomba da Maia....

I don't see any "connection" at the moment but will certainly keep your email in my "in work" folder for future reference....:-)

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. We're very busy here at NYU with end of the semester events.  I could only find tenuous connection between the da Ponte/da Costa line but nothing else.

Keep in touch.

Hi Elizabeth,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.  It's been really busy at work with end of the semester events, etc.  I was in Sao Miguel in March of 1995 - that was my second trip and I've been there a total of 4 times, most recently in 2005.  I too did some research at the library in Ponta Delgada.  I can speak some Portuguese (having studied it at NYU with a Brazilian in preparation for my first trip to Portugal.  I would write down the information I wanted to supplement my limited language skills and that helped a lot.

I'll get back to you some time this week with info that I have.

Best,

Mary Ann

You are fortunate in having at least "some" language skills...I DO remember a lot of "words" and some phrases from listening to my mother and grandmother talk together but...none that would help in my genealogy research :-)

Looking forward to it....in the meantime don't "stress" yourself too much so you will enjoy the Christmas season....:-)

Cheers,

Elizabeth
