Fawn U (because we have more than one Fawn on this list),

Emigration out of the Azores are the Passaportes.  They exist for the 3 ports of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel, Angra on Terceira, and Horta on Faial (Fayal is the old spelling).  Ponta Delgada has the most gaps in their records and Faial's are the most complete.

They are coming online, but nothing has been added in a few years. Nothing has been posted for the port of Horta either.  So you can write to the archive in Horta and ask them to look, or hire a researcher.  Either way, you need to use the Portuguese spellings of the names, as they didn't use Anglicized versions of their names over there.

Joseph = Jose.  Mary = Maria.  I don't have a Gertrude in my tree, so I'm unsure on that one.  Others will let you know.

You will need to include the ages too.  You want them to find the right family.  How old was Jose in 1893 and Gertrude and Mary?

Fawn,

I don't know about Faial, but I checked Ellis Island.

I checked EllisIsland.org and found a Jose Silveria daRosa who arrived at Ellis Island on the passenger ship Vega on June 14, 1893.  The port of departure was Faial. He was listed as age 19, and a laborer.

Coincidently, my great-grandfather, Joao Pedro Tavares, was on the same ship and arrived the same day. His port of departure was St. Michael. There were 325 passengers on this ship. The ports of departure are listed as Lisbon, Portugal, and the following Azorean Islands... Teceira, St. Jorge, Faial, Graciosa, Flores and St. Michael.

The Ellis Island site is free, you just have to register. You can even order a copy of the actual ship manifest.

Jose Silveira daRosa is line # 292.

My great grandfather is line # 103.

I'll try to send you the link to the manifest page, but I'm not sure if it will work:

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Immigration Records located in Fayal

Good Day,

I am hoping for guidance with this question:

How would I find Immigration records, in Fayal, for relatives that left there and came to Cambridge, MA?

I only have the immigration year.  It is for my Great-Great Grandparents and Great-Grandmother.

Joseph and Gertrude DaRosa immigrated, with their daughter, Mary, to Cambridge, MA from Fayal, Azores in 1893.

Is there a way to find these records?

I am unable to find the ship log.  Also, Gertrude never became naturalized.  Joseph died, soon after arriving, and never was naturalized, so those records are not available to me.  I can't find any records for my Mary, either.

I am hoping that there might be a departure record in Fayal.   Is this a record that may be available?

Thank you so much for your guidance.  It is greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,

Fawn

Fawn,

I see a birth record for Palmira Rosa, parents Joseph Rosa and Gertrude Grace in Cambridge 5 Jan 1900. So Joseph died between April of 1899 and JUne 1900 , when the census was taken , and she was shown as  widowed.

Hi Fawn U,
1) The address for the archive in Horta can be found on the Azores GenWeb here:
http://goo.gl/DAiVJ
2) No, I don't know the cost.
3) I suggest you look at the Passaportes for Ponta Delgada.  You will see a Passaporte number where a family traveled together (not all families came together - some came a few at a time) and an individual passenger number.
4) You don't know what names will appear over there.  When writing, I would say his name is Jose da Rosa Fialho ou Jose da Fialho ou Jose da Rosa com Gertrudes Garcia (I'm assuming that they came to America together).
