Hi Jacki
If your grandfather was Naturalized then his Petition for Naturalization would provide a wealth of information as to his arrival in the US.

Hi Jacki,
First check the 1930 US Census to see if he was a Citizen. If he was then depending on where he lived the court that had jurisdiction at the time would have the records. Many immigrants did not apply for citizenship until the late 1930’s when social security was started. At that time you had to be a US citizen to get social security.
Citizen ship records could be in a state district court such as records for Attleboro, MA up till the 1940’s were kept at the Taunton district Court and then transferred to the State Archives in Boston. Later records in the 1950’s were done in Federal courts and are now in the Federal Archives in Waltham MA.
Speaking of Ships Records, I have a book called "Portuguese Immigrants to Hawaii". Compiled by Edgar C. Knowlton, Jr. 1993. If anyone has names you want me to look up, let me know.

Aloha again Jacki G.
I don't know which island the ships landed. My guess would be Oahu first then some were taken to other islands. Two sets of my great-grandparents eventually landed on Maui. But my Oliveira great grandparents went to Kauai before Maui. Have you tried contacting The Portuguese Genealogical & Historical Society of Hawaii?

Here is what it says about the Steamship Monarch in "The Portuguese in Hawaii" by John Henry Felix, Ph.D. (out of print)
#7. Steamship Monarch (British) arrived Sept 15, 1882, 57 days out from St. Michael (Sao Miguel), Azores, with 202 men, 197 women, 458 children.

Jacki,
I called Doris Naumu and she said all the ships that sailed Portuguese to Hawaii landed first on Oahu. They had to be "cleared" before they were let on shore. Smaller boats took on immigrants to other islands.
