Hi, I am new to the group. I am hoping that someone can point me in
the right direction. My grandfather, Jose A. Medeiros (1898-1979) came
to the US from Faial when he was about 7. I only know that they came
into the Boston area and then traveled by train to the west coast. How
do I, or where can I, find the ship that they came on?

Ultimately, I am trying to find out what village they were from on
Faial.

Jacki,

You will need to check the Boston arrivals as well as the Ellis Island arrivals.  More info on how to do that can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html
(Scroll down to "Passenger Arrival Lists.")

Records from the Azores are starting to come online, but nothing from Faial yet.  Once you exhaust your U.S. sources, you might consider hiring a researcher to look at the port of Horta, Faial, in their ships lists leaving the Azores.   A list of researchers for hire can be found here:

Hi Jacki,
You might want to look at arrivals from Providence, R.I. My family,
paternal and maternal, arrived from Terceira in Providence, also took
the train to Gustine, CA.

Hi Jacki

If your grandfather was Naturalized then his Petition for Naturalization would provide a wealth of information as to his arrival in the US.

First, thank you all for the ideas.

Rick,

How would I go about finding his petition?  My mother says she thinks it was somewhere around 1926 but she's not sure. The only absolute was that he was living in California in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. The family had his birth certificate from Faial at one point, but since his and my grandmother's deaths, no one knows where it went or remembers how it was obtained. I have never seen it as it was lost long before I started my research unfortunately.

Hi Jacki,

First check the 1930 US Census to see if he was a Citizen. If he was then depending on where he lived the court that had jurisdiction at the time would have the records. Many immigrants did not apply for citizenship until the late 1930’s when social security was started. At that time you had to be a US citizen to get social security.

Citizen ship records could be in a state district court such as records for Attleboro, MA up till the 1940’s were kept at the Taunton district Court and then transferred to the State Archives in Boston. Later records in the 1950’s were done in Federal courts and are now in the Federal Archives in Waltham MA.

The 1930 census says what looks like Pd. I am assuming that that may mean "pending". I was able to find the manifest of the ship that he arrived on last night and there is  a notation on it with a date of April 1938. Another researcher told me that was made by the immigration dept. My mother keeps saying that she thought is was in the late twenties but I called my aunt last night and she said she thought she was around 12 when he became a citizen and she was born in 1927. That would be right in line with the 1938 notation. She also said they had to go to San Francisco for it. There is a regional center in San Bruno which is about 15 miles south so I guess I will start there. The strange thing though, is, I have a copy of his application for a Soc Sec. number. He did that in Dec 1936. How would he have gotten a number if he wasn't a citizen yet? Maybe they didn't actually issue it until 1938?

Thanks for the help
Jacki

Jacki,

Pd. is not a code for that column.  It's PA (Pa) for Papers filed, NA (Na) for Naturalized, and AL (Al) for Alien.

Can you say where you found your ancestor on the 1930 so another pair of eyes can take a look?

You didn't have to be a citizen to have Social Security.

Cheri,

Well that would make sense. They are listed as "illegible" when you search for them but here are the details:

Enumeration District: 7-56

Jacki,

I ran it through Ancestry with no problem.  They have him indexed as Medeiros.

The census says he immigrated in 1910 and he has filed his papers to become a citizen.

Where was Jose in 1920 and was he in America for the 1910 census (census day was Apr. 15th 1910)?

If you have time, I would greatly appreciate you looking up Luiz and Roza Fernandes and their son Manuel and possibly another son Jose. I found an index card for them in June of 1882 on the SS Monarch but have been unable to find the actual manifest. I am pretty sure that this is my g great grandfather Manuel Fernandes and his parents and brother. If I could find more info about them, I could be more sure. According to Roza's death cert and the info from one of the census' she immigrated somewhere between 1880 and 1885 with her husband and at least one son. She was born Jan 1859 and her son was born Aug 1878. I don't know any dates for Luiz.

With wife Roza de Jesus age 25.

Cheri,

He actually immigrated in 1906. He arrived in Boston on 8/6/1906 headed for Martinez, CA.  So, yes, he was here for the 1910 census. He would have been in the Martinez area for both 1910 and 1920. Which is about 15 miles west of where he was in the 1930 census. In 1920 he would have still been living with his parents. He didn't marry until 1925. His parents names were Manuel and Mary/Maria Medeiros and he had a brother named Manuel and two sisters, Mary/Maria and Lizzy (Alice). Lizzy was born in Martinez. The others were all born in the Azores.

Thank you for clarifying his citizenship status

I don't know which island the ships landed.  My guess would be Oahu first then some were taken to other islands.  Two sets of my great-grandparents eventually landed on Maui. But my Oliveira great grandparents went to Kauai before Maui.  Have you tried contacting The Portuguese Genealogical & Historical Society of Hawaii?

The date on the file card of June 8 1882, is incorrect. The ship SS Monarch arrived in Hawaii 2 Jul 1882, 57 days out of Sao Miguel . It would have left port the first week of May, and been

rounding South America at that time.  The manifest might not be available, but the Oakland FHC has the films of the Portuguese Consulate registering immigrants at Honolulu

We don't translate the word fregueisa because it comes out weird. So we just say village.  Someone has probably abbreviated Faja de Cima as FC.

Jacki,

This where the family is from. When you order films at the FHC this the place to look for. In Faja Cima the church records are for Nossa Senhora da Olveira.

A concelho is like a county, a group of towns.

A fregusia is the town .  Faja means fan but refers to the fan shaped area built up by eroding soil. This gives a flat place to farm and/or build houses. It's commonly seen as a place

name all over the Azores. ( Faja Grande, Fajazinha,Faja do Joao Dias, Faja dos Cubres)

So it would be the top  or upper faja. Faja de Cima, is next to Faja de Baixo, the lower, bottom, or at the base.

Here is a map from Doug Holmes Portuguese Geneaolgy Master list site. You can look through the postings there to see if others are researching this family also.

I have been trying to find Luiz on a census but no luck so far. I don't know how long they stayed there before moving onto California.  He could have only been on either 1890 or 1900 because he and his son Manuel (my g grandfather) were dead by the time the 1910 census happened. I found Roza and Manuels wife and daughters in 1910 in Oakland, CA. I know that Manuel was killed 8/16/09 in a quarry explosion but I have no idea so far what happened to Luiz and when.

Jacki,
I see someone answered your question. Yes, all ships first went to
Honolulu where the people were process. The Portuguese immigrants
went through the Portuguese Consulate and were recorded in those
logs. Those logs are on microfilm with the LDS church. The consulate
logs are a good resource because the bridge the gap. The passporte
records says who applied to leave for Hawaii, the ship manifest tells
you who was on board ship, and the consulate log tells you who
arrived--sometimes including names not on the other records such as
children born on the voyage.

As you are looking for Portuguese Hawaiians, have you visited
mywebsite. www.yourislandroutes.com? I have indexes to Portuguese
Hawaiian Memories, Robert DeMello's Azorean passports, as well as some
other records. There is also alot of general information on genealogy
and heritage.

Thanks,
Mel
