I am looking for anyone with photos of the immigrants from Sao Miguel
who boarded the SS Homeland on March 22, 1954 in Ponta Delgada. My
dad, Jaime Furtado de Sousa, was on that voyage and recalls that
photos were taken on the immigrants as they boarded the ship. He is
now 82 years old and in the last few weeks has mentioned several times
that he would love to see those photos again. If anyone has these
photos they can share or if any knows where might be able to find
them, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks for all your help.

Maggie,

The picture didn't come out good. I can't remember who sent it to me. I'll
check and see if I have it in my file.

Have you given the group your lines? I was wondering if you are related to
me. There are a few cousins I've met on line from NY and Canada that are de
Sousa's; Manuel's family and Maria da Assuncao's family (attached). Other
siblings; Jacinto, Jose are missing out of five that I've connected with.

Yet, on the other part of this you are Furtado as well so we could be
connected there. You may be connected to Manoel Cesar Furtado who is a
Furtado de Sousa.

This is the second post I have seen about photos of immigrants on
their ships in a few weeks, and I was wondering, was this a common
practice that there would be group photographs like this? They are
really great, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to find
out if any of my ancestors' voyages were photographed?

I googled Azores Immigrant Pictures and found this interesting site:

http://fernandocandido.com/saturnia/saturnia.html

and there are others listed on google, I believe.

Enjoy.

I have watched a wonderful documentary (in english) called 'STRONG
HEARTS, STEADY HANDS' about the first Portuguese immigrants to
Canada. I borrowed it through my library so i don't know how
available it is if anyone wanted to purchase it.
It had interviews with the men about their hardships on the farms of
Canada, their feelings about leaving family behind, and how they
sponsered family to come over.

Linda,
If you could get a better copy of the photo of the men that would be
great. My dad was one of the group that left on March 22, 1954, I
have no photos of this at all except for the other one I have
downloaded from this group.
Thanks,
Maria Natalia

I still can't recall who sent it to me, but it's a print out that I sent you
which is not legible. Has anyone followed up with the picture?

Have you contacted Manoel Furtado de Sousa from Brazil via the group?

I have a Jacinto, Jose, Manuel, Antonio (my ggrandfather)de Sousa Furtado's.
Mary Jo Costa Ledo who has now joined the group is from Canada and her
ggrandfather is Manuel. I'm not sure if the names got switched.

I'm curious is Jaime derived from Jacinto?

Hello Maggie.
I have a picture of those men but it was taken in front of the "Palacio do Governo Civil", at least tha is what I have been led to believe.
If you are still interested feel free to get in touch with me privately. By the way if your dad can still remember the names of some of those who sailed with him I would appreciate it very much if you would either send it to me or post it.

Hermano,
If you have a photo, I would also be interested as my dad was one of
them.

I will have my uncle look at it and see if he can recognize anyone because I can't. I'll let you know.
